Anyone else having issues with gtk3 and libpng in Arch?
is it possible to make console text smaller?
I have a CentOS minimal install going and the console text is... lulzy huge, I kinda rough counted each character is like 60 pixels high.
I was thinking of installing X as a last resort that way at least I can control terminal text size but wondering if there is a simpler solution to this.
Not as far as I know.
If you could do KMS (Kernel Mode Setting), you'd get a high resolution terminal. All the text would be smaller and high res.
Without it I think you're stuck at the standard 80 columns by 24 rows or whatever.
I'm kind of nervous. I want to over write my current Mint Linux partition with Arch, When I start up my computer Grub loads up and it says where the OS is installed. sda2(I don't remember exactly). Now I have installed Arch before on VirtualBox and I chose which drive and to the best of my knowledge it gave me an option like sda0 or something. When I install Arch I can just pick sda2, correct? This is the first time I will be installing another distro on an existing partition.
I just installed Debian and it's not detecting my Intel Wireless 100 Series card... I tried getting iwlagn but nothings working. Help me please.
i installed XP instead, no debian-based distro was working with my hardware, and Windows 7 wouldn't fit on my USB, and the only other computer i had was one with no DVD drive.

Assuming you have a windows/linux dual boot, it would be wise to uninstall linux mint by restoring window's MBR with a repair disk (thus removing grub) then deleting linux mint's partitions within window's disk manager.
Then you can install arch linux without worry.
Anyone else having issues with gtk3 and libpng in Arch?
turns out it was because I had a weird version of libcairo installed. reverting the the standard libcairo in the arch repos fixed my issues.
I'm kind of bumming my way through the Lunar Linux installation oh this doesn't work? Oh well, press a bunch more buttons and retry.
recommend me a distro
i've tried ubuntu before and yes it's pretty easy to use but i'd like to try something else. it's for my laptop and i'd like the distro to be easy to configure when it comes to interfaces, themes and icons etc. i'd rather not having something like arch where i have to spend hours and hours just to install basic functions but at the same time i don't want the distro to be filled with useless stuff that i'll never use. it's a ~cheap laptop that I use at uni.
I'm sure this has been asked 100 times, but I'm looking to get in to linux and learn a few things, yet have a decently functional PC at the same time, any recommendations? I've used ubuntu before but very briefly
1) Choose your distro (i.e. check the thread version)
2) Install it (the wiki is your friend)
3) Use it (once you are at your first virtual console drop back in here with any questions)
4)????
5)Profit
Congratulations, you now have a functional PC and know more about linux!
Try checking the logs for your login manager. They should be located in /var/log
Since XFCE works and there isn't any errors, I'd be willing to bet it's the laptop being slow.
Which linux is the best for a home/work laptop that I use for both entertainment and work purposes?
Although now my XFCE dock and top bar only work when logged in as root... :/
Check your ~/.xinitrc in vim and make sure you are starting xfce4 with proper policykit permissions.
I.E.
exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch startxfce4
Get LinuxMint if you want it to work out of the box with all the neccesary (and useless) apps, or try out Arch Linux and you will have anything you need and not more, but I suggest reading the official installation guide on wiki.archlinux.org before installing, and don't worry about of the lots of options, because only the dumbest person who just does stuff without caring how is it written in the settings file will mess up the system. And good luck.
I had a similar issue. IIRC installing alsa-oss did the trick.

Brilliant first post.
Going to install Arch on laptop.

Razor-qt looks nice, but I'm not entirely sold.

I use xfce and have had no complaints as of yet.

Fonts are up the ass, it has the wrong keyboard layout and the display manager isn't working.
Where did I put that Xubuntu ISO...

Don't give up so readily! If you are having a problem, chances are someone else has had the exact same issue and a bit (or a lot) of troubleshooting with the help of this forum and google can fix it.
Pff, I installed Ubuntu and GNOME-Shell.
This thing is sexy, fast, easy to use and can actually keep up with what I'm doing.
It's like Unity except not as stupid.
Need to open a terminal? Press super, ter, enter, done.

Are you implying xfce has no customizable keyboard shortcuts? Because it does. I press ctrl + alt + t to open terminal. You can also just swap over to a virtual terminal if you really want one; no matter what DE you are using its probably just in virtual console 7 (ctrl + alt + f7) and you can have as many as you want (usually defaults to 6, so ctrl + alt + [f1-f6])

Requires libjpeg-turbo-1.1.4
Mirrors only have 1.2.0 on them
I'm now running latest Ubuntu with Catalyst 12.1 and GNOME-Shell.
This thing is so sexy, I'm considering trying to have sex with my laptop.

You won't even have to use any antivirus software (Linux joke?)
