And I am in LOVE! Just need to find a way to create new launcher, I know it has something to do with a new script. Now with arch you run on graphical interfaces like Gnome and such? Is there a way (Like maybe pictures) of comparing them? Maybe a website? or an informative picture?
Every Desktop Environment looks pretty much the same across all distro's. Each DE has their own website and most of the websites have a media section. At lease you got KDE, for some reason that's the one that always slips my mind.

So what would you guys reccomend? I personally am thinking maybe KDE but I am unsure.
So what would you guys reccomend? I personally am thinking maybe KDE but I am unsure.
If you're using Arch..Just try them all out..Install one, use it for a couple days, then uninstall it and try a different one until you find something you're happy with. Generally if you uninstall a DE with pacman -Rsc you'll leave minimal amounts of crap left behind. Right now I'm using GNOME 3 and I'm rather happy with it, but it might not be what you want.
So what would you guys reccomend? I personally am thinking maybe KDE but I am unsure.
Personally I used KDE once, and that was enough. It's bloated, but you can get it to look really nice, just didn't enjoy it. Right now I am running cinnamon 1.4 and it is PERFECT!<3
So what would you guys reccomend? I personally am thinking maybe KDE but I am unsure.
If you install a display manager like gdm, you can install ALL the desktop environments then select them from a drop-down list during login. I personally recommend xfce, but you shouldn't listen to others on trivial things like a desktop environment; it's YOUR os, do what you want with it!
I wish there was a large list of these things. EDIT: This cinnamon looks nice: http://cinnamon.linuxmint.com/?page_id=61 Opinions? Also I plan on getting x64 Arch, will this be fine for the sake of drivers and such?
Hey guys, I bought an Android phone. Is it a good idea to install Linux on it? It's an LG Optimus Net (LG-P690) with Android 2.3.4, and I would like to know whether it's a good idea to install Linux on it or not. Can you still use the SIM card even if the phone has Linux on it?
You could root it and install "Linux installer" on it, allowing you to run a Linux system on your Android phone virtualized.
I'm having trouble using the Linux Installer thingy - I selected an Ubuntu Jaunty distro, created, formatted and mounted the loop file and then I hit install. However, it gives a "can't resolve default server" error. I tried googling it, but nothing on par showed up. Do you guys know how to overcome the error? Edit: Allow me to apply my face to my desk. *smashes head against desk* Wi-Fi was off. Turned it on, installing normally now.
Anyone know some app for Unity that allows me to change panel transparency and color? (MyUnity only allows to change the transparency)
Anyone know some app for Unity that allows me to change panel transparency and color? (MyUnity only allows to change the transparency)
The best solution is to stop using Unity at all and switch to XFCE/LXDE ASAP!
The best solution is to stop using Unity at all and switch to XFCE/LXDE ASAP!
Stop using Unity and switch to any other DE ASAP!
What is the opinion of everyone here on GNOME 3? I'm using it right now, Fedora 17 beta.
What is the opinion of everyone here on GNOME 3? I'm using it right now, Fedora 17 beta.
When it was first out it was really shiny, but offered no customization. I don't know if it has changed since then, but honestly I hated it with a passion when I realized how much more power I had over xfce's desktop.
Does anyone know how I can increase mouse speed in Ucuntu? The mouse settings don't do anything. and i refuse to use mouse acceleration.
What is the opinion of everyone here on GNOME 3? I'm using it right now, Fedora 17 beta.
Dumbed down, no built-in customization options (you have to do it all manually), no support for Gtk titlebars (like MATE/GNOME 2.x, yes, this is a drawback to me), and just all around clunky. I switched back to GNOME 2.x using the fork MATE, since that's pretty much what GNOME 3 should've been. An updated and much-revised version of 2.x. Not a totally new DE that would eat it's own heart out.
What is the opinion of everyone here on GNOME 3? I'm using it right now, Fedora 17 beta.
I like Gnome 3 however its missing some very important features that I find are critical to productivity for me. I hate the menu showing applications and the customization is just a joke. I like how you can just install extensions from the gnome website with a couple of clicks however there are not many that are useful. I would like to know what happened to the Gnome dev team to not implement a simple power off button. I recently switched to XFCE4 and loving it. What is everyone's opinions on Gnome + Cinnamon? What is everyone's opinions on MATE? What is everyone using as their login manager?
What is the opinion of everyone here on GNOME 3? I'm using it right now, Fedora 17 beta.
Stupid mess, that doesn't let itself to be configured properly. The new versions of GNOME and Unity as well are making the world of Linux look pathetic. The only good desktop environments out there are XFCE4, KDE, MATE and Cinnamon. Downgrading to GNOME 2 is also a VERY good option.
-snip- What is everyone using as their login manager?
The virtual console.
Don't really need a login manager on a single user desktop.
I use LXDM and MATE, since I couldn't get MDM to work. Haven't gotten around to put a theme on LXDM yet..
I'm trying to set up X on Arch and it isn't going correctly. I followed the beginner's guide and installed all the necessary packages, but when I type "startx" the entire screen goes black and I have to reboot. The log file shows that it loads the nouveau driver successfully, then complains that it can't load vesa, fbdev, or nvidia drivers, and it ends after spitting out a list of nouveau supported video cards, and choosing one. Any ideas? I tried using an xorg.conf that specifically stated to use nouveau as the driver, but after seemingly loading successfully in the log its still all black.
What is everyone using as their login manager?
I use Slim.
