Does anyone know of a lightweight source-based distro, that isn't Gentoo and using Portage? (I'm tired of having to compile stuff using a slow Python-based backend, that uses up a LOT of RAM)

I'm pretty sure you already know this, but eix is a great tool for searching portage.

I have no problem with other tools for Portage, but there doesn't seem to be anyone that are really really fast. Like C-ish fast.
If you honestly feel that way, you should really talk to her about it. I have a feeling you're being slightly sarcastic though.
Yea sarcasm, [del]I'm not my girlfriends bitch[/del] :v:

I think.
Good distro for a laptop that......has seen better days to put it gently that isn't Arch?
Just finished putting together a new server to occupy my basement.
He has ~45Gigs of ram (including swap), 3ghz cpu, and a single 2TB harddrive.

Don't look; it's embarrassing. :(

Arch took a shit again.
Are the Xorg drivers to blame ?
[img_thumb]http://filesmelt.com/dl/Screenshot_from_2012-06-05_22:24:37.png[/img_thumb]
As you can see the bottom panel had its shit fucked. Also the conky is missing some text in system and network parts. And the top-left hot corner (which I have completely disabled) icon is a blue box, clearly with some horrid intentions.
I just need confirmation if this indeed is because of Xorg drivers. If it is I will react swiftly and make necessary reforms.

Also why is it that after shut down (not reboot or suspend or lock...) my usb mouse is not responsive? I have to reconnect the cable for it to work.

Yeah, that's about the biggest thing that annoys me. Calculating dependencies and several other background stuff takes a ridiculous amount of time.
Ever since my attempt to install crunchbang, my laptop wont boot. Even off of a LiveCD\USB flash drive. I've tried a couple of different distros, and it just will not boot.

FreeBSD. The FreeBSD ports system is what Portage is based on. It's a binary install, and it has a binary package manager, so ports is optional, but it's there.
Also Python/Portage is nowhere close to being the bottleneck when you're compiling.
Sounds like irrational hate of non-native code. Python is by no means slow or uses significantly more RAM than anything else.

sourcemage? it's about as cutting edge as you can get.

When you turn on your laptop can you get into the BIOS screen? Have you checked your boot order (hard drive, network, DVD, USB)? Did you change any settings in your BIOS when you installed crunchbang?

Debian
Does anyone know where I can find libcanberra-gtk-module.dll? I need it to run a program through wine but I have found absolutely nothing useful

I do not hate Python. I hate that emerging things are slow, and only when I'm doing it using Gentoo.
I've written my own Portage-like system before, in C, and calling a few make or build commands, and installing software, is not difficult, nor is it slow.
But when I'm doing it using Portage, it is.

I'll give it a go, thanks :)
Hey everyone! What's the best place to learn bash/sh?

I used this
I tried to install systemd. I failed. Two hours later I'm now back after chrooting and package updating Arch's old system back in.
I really want to move back to Ubuntu after trying to switch over but failed due to an issue with my sound. My sound chip (Realtek HD Audio ALC892) doesn't seem to really like Ubuntu and has issues with low sound quality/choppiness which forced me back to using Windows 7. To be noted, it doesn't work great on Windows either until I install the drivers from Realtek's website. Tried installing drivers for Ubuntu but didn't work. A bit struck on what to do.

I think that document is assuming that I know far more than I actually do, I couldn't follow it at all.

I don't know what you did, but I installed systemd and systemd-arch-units and it worked out of the box, I just had to add another boot option for systemd and worked flawlessly.
Somebody should make a thread that is a real in-depth and pic-included "How to Install and Operate Arch Linux".
Would be really cool if that could get stickied or something.
I wish I could but I fail at Arch Linux.. I just use Mint.
The thing with Arch is that past the initial install from the Live CD everything is different per user and per installation. Not everyone has the same software.

I'm not a smart person.

On another note, I'm a long time lover of Arch, but I'm a bit concerned that it's only x86. How bad is Gentoo?
Arch does x86_64 without any problems. In fact I am currently running a 64bit Arch system. I don't know where you heard that.

Gentoo can be noticeably faster than Arch if you configure it properly. The install is easier than it looks and doesn't take days, compiling your kernel which is really easy if you use kernel seeds (my kernel takes about 5 minutes to compile and is 3.7M).

I can get the BIOS screen, the liveCD menu shows up and everything, but whenever I try to boot an OS other than live Crunchbang it just shuts down mid-boot. It also does this if I try to install crunchbang. I'm DLing Archbang to see if that works.
I am confused about the difference between themes, window themes and GTK+ themes in Linux Mint 13.
I understand that I can download and install themes for the panel in Linux Mint 13 (e.g. Holo, ICS, Minty), but none of these change the windows, so they're pretty pointless to me.
I see that the 'Window themes' option sort of changes some aspects of the windows, but all the built-in themes besides Mint-Z are quite ugly.
In addition, I see that the 'GTK+ themes' option changes some aspects of the windows, but again, all the built-in themes are ugly or don't match the panel theme I have.
TL;DR Where/how can I get and install window themes for Linux Mint 13 (w/ Cinnamon)? I know how to change the theme of the panel and menu.
Ive setup an Archlinux home server running Lighttpd, Transmission headless, Squid and Pdnsd. I have Squid setup to use Pdnsd as a DNS server however at random times Squid will give me an error telling me that there is no usable DNS record to point to facepunch.
The following error was encountered while trying to retrieve the URL: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?
Unable to determine IP address from host name facepunch.com
The DNS server returned:
No DNS records
This means that the cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL. Check if the address is correct.
Your cache administrator is webmaster.
I had Pdnsd print everything in its cache to the console using pdnsd-ctl dump and I found that the record for facepunch.com was not pointing to anything usable such as an IP address or another domain.
facepunch.com.
06/08 11:26:42 A (negated)
06/08 11:18:40 AAAA (negated)
A few minutes later the record does point to something usable.
facepunch.com.
06/08 11:26:42 A (negated)
06/08 11:34:37 CNAME cf-ssl7079-protected.facepunch.com.
06/08 11:34:37 AAAA (negated)
This is happening more frequently with websites I regularly visit.
My pdnsd config.

I have no idea what i've done wrong. Please help.
