God damnit, why does Arch not work with USB headsets and MP4 HTML5 video?
Because you have to configure it to do so :u. For the usb headset, have you tried installing pulseaudio and running pavucontrol to see if you can route audio output to the device? And for html5 video, I thought the only codec it supported was webm (aka libvpx)? And that it was entirely dependent on the browser you used? (Chrome and firefox support it pretty well) If you just want to watch non-html5 movies in your webbrowser from straight up downloads, you can install the gecko-mediaplayer plugin.
I don't use Ubuntu for a week, I boot into it again and I need to install 41 updates. Is that normal?
I don't use Ubuntu for a week, I boot into it again and I need to install 41 updates. Is that normal?
Yeah, since they're faster at releasing security updates than Microsoft.
dvtm seems to be more like pseudo-window-management for a text environment..tmux is just, as its name implies, a terminal multiplexer like screen, except its updated more frequently and seems a bit easier to use (It has a nice little help function if you forget the keys - ctrl+b+?.)
I think I'm alright with dvtm; I don't think I really need the ability to push things off the screen, I just use multiple virtual consoles if I want things "in the background".
I finally managed to get GMod and TF2 up to a playable speed in Wine, though now they look like early PS2 games graphics-wise. Really can't wait for these to become native, they should run so much better...
I managed to get WINE running really well on pretty much max settings and at a 1920x1080 resolution with Counter Strike Source (Uses the same engine as TF2/Gmod now). If you're using Ubuntu, quit using Unity and use Openbox for when you use WINE, make sure you have the proper graphic drivers and you should be fine.
Stranger: So Moofy how has your weekend been like? Me: - Oh listen up. So i got banned from FP for 3 days, and my girlfriend beated me up. I come back and my computer is still shit plus my parents likes to yell at me, oh wait there is more. My laptop has Linux but conky is shit and can't get a good theme going. Stranger: Soooo..? Me: Pretty fucking good. [tab]WUBWUB[/tab] So any good game recording and video editing software out there for Linux? Windows is always like: FRAPS + VEGAS. What would you suggest?
Naelstrom/Naelstrof made a script for recording video, you can ask him about it (although you'll need to install it yourself, it's a PKGBUILD for arch)
You can find it here: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1175899&p=36464729&viewfull=1#post36464729 Fraps for linux would be glc, but if your just recording your desktop it's best to use my application :u.
For video editing software, use OpenShot.
Very good suggestions, will look in to it. Also, running my Windows i use something called DXTORY. Pretty fucking good.
Well, I saw the title and figured I might as well ask this here. I installed Arch on my dell D630 with nvidia graphics with openbox, simple enough. My problem is with setting up suspend and/or hibernate with pm-utils. Sleep mode, it goes into sleep fine, but when I press the power button to wake it up it just powers on for 0.1 ish seconds and shuts off. With hibernation, all seems to go fine like before, but when I go to resume the screen stays blank with the computer on for about 15 seconds and then it reboots. Any ideas? I looked at the pm-suspend log in /var/logs and as far as I can tell everything went fine, but it doesnt have any messages about waking up. Also, the same symtoms rarely appear in windows if that means anything here.
Use Kdenlive for video editing. It works a treat. Also,
Just used Gnome 3 for the first time today. Some of it is cool, but a lot of stuff is just mind boggling. The animations of things impressed me, but like why isn't there a minimize button? [editline]25th June 2012[/editline] After some tweaking it's less confusing. Got a dock extension, which helps a lot. Played around with gnome-tweak-tool. I like this Documents app that can view my Google Docs documents. That's pretty neat. Wish it could view my other stuff I'm storing in Google Drive.
Hello guys, I just fucked my video drivers up. Yep, I went on the ATi page to download the proprietary drivers for my video card (ATi Radeon HD 5670), which was a .run file. I've googled the .run extension and found that chmod'ding it will make it an executable. So I did that, launched it, installed the drivers, and lo and behold next time I reboot the drivers fail. It didn't install through pacman, it just dumped some files everywhere. And now I need help uninstalling it and re-enabling the xf86-video-ati driver. Official ATi documentation says that I should navigate to the /usr/share/fglrx folder and run sh./fglrx-uninstall.sh, but there is no fglrx folder. I either have to find a way to generate that folder with all its required files or to delete the driver's files and reconfigure each file it modified. So, fine fellows, will you help a good friend out? Which distro are you using? If arch then I'm pretty sure that there's a propietary and open-source packages on the official repos. If you are using debian, ubuntu, fedora then there must be driver packages for both closed and open-source ones.
I'm using arch, and I used the xf86-video-ati driver till now, but I wanted to get HDMI audio to work. I thought that installing the proprietary drivers might solve it, but it managed to create yet another problem - killing video.
If you wanted to use propiertary drivers, then you should've just pacman -S catalyst to make it installed. I don't know much about Ati vcards but there's a wiki page for it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ati , it even mentions how to make HDMI audio work with open-source drivers.
Right, I still need to get rid of the old files. Any idea how?
Do you have mlocate installed? You can try locateing anything relating to ATI and deleting them.
Alright, I've got mlocate to work - how do I use it to remove the ati/amd files?
-snip-
Alright, I've got mlocate to work - how do I use it to remove the ati/amd files?
lol. Remember everyone, NEVER install something without your package manager or you run into this. supervoltage, use this to identify files not installed by pacman: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman_Tips#Identify_files_not_owned_by_any_package and remove them. Then to install catalyst drivers, you must install it from the AUR. It was removed from the offical repositories because of how unsatisfactory they were.
Yay, one step forward and two steps back. I fixed the video using Naelstrom's way with that bash script, but now the mouse and keyboard are dead.. I guess that it's maybe a problem with the X config.. I'm not sure though

Linus' favorite curse word: "shit" Edit: Although Linus seems to like the word "fuck" too:
Okay Xubuntu 12.04, my applications menu is gitchy. Sometimes i can't open it, however when i then minimize or maximize a window it allows me to do it. It's random, so can't get specific error. Anyone knows what it could be?
Today I learned that Diablo III players playing on Linux recieve bans for using 3rd party software.
Today I learned that Diablo III players playing on Linux recieve bans for using 3rd party software.
There are quite a lot of dumb people in that thread. They seem to think that Linux is a 3rd party client rather than an OS. This guy is pretty dumb. He says he knows "Advanced operating system & programming skills", but I'm pretty sure he means "I can type regedit and look like I'm doing something".
Linux isn't supported for a reason. They didn't develop the game to played on it, and therefor, cannot monitor 3rd party application detection like they can on Windows. It's an understandable automatic ban if you understand advanced operating system & programming skills. They have an equivalent security measure similar to punkbuster, designed to monitor your systems RAM while playing the game. If this was unable to run, or detected an anomaly, then it will flag the account. TLDR: Linux isn't supported, therefor they cannot ensure security while playing. Compromising your own account by altering the client to be played on Linux is a threat to the company as well. These accounts were banned rightfully.
Alright so I installed Gentoo, now what FTP server should I be using?
