I did something to an ubuntu laptop and now it's only booting into busybox (all other options in GRUB lead to memtest or busybox). It also says that /dev/proc and /fstab are not found.
help
Any chance you could expand on that "something"? Or do you have no clue :v;
I usually install XFCE, and remove the window and desktop manager, and replace it with openbox/awesome.
I'd suggest Xfce4
I do the same with e17 :v:
So I installed mint since my netbook needed a new os and win8 kills it however I'm looking for a program like vnc that lets me control or view the main session aka what the user is seeing and interact with it if needed, is that possible I tried tight vnc and it creates separate sessions
Are there any video editors that are of semi-professional quality?
I have tried
-Avidemux
-Kdenlive
-LiVES
But they all seem either clunky to use or really basic
Fed up with Arch, (for now at least, I'm more than willing to come back to it, most likely once a current image of ArchBang is made) I tried my hand with Ubuntu; starting from a cli install and building from it. (I like this a lot but I'm afraid future updates will break it since it's not rolling-release like Arch) I am learning a lot and right now I can't say I'm particularly enjoying the process. I'm trying to figure out how Openbox works and I know there's guides and I'm looking at them and everything, but still.
The second I end this session everything is going to fall apart and I'm going to have to run a bunch of terminals to run the stuff I'm using right now. There's just so much stuff missing and I'm gradually filling in the blanks and it's starting to look like an actual OS now, but I'm really worried that I'm not going to get any sound because I see absolutely no mention of it anywhere.
I guess right now my biggest peeve is the fact that I'm not sure how to make Openbox do everything for me when I type "startx" (auto-starting tint2, conky, anything else I'm going to need once I flesh this out).
I chose Openbox because I'm kind of familiar with it from my usage of ArchBang but if there's an easier way to do this (Would just installing a desktop environment do all the work for me? If so, I'm trying to find one that's comparable to Openbox, I guess, in terms of "weight.")
Tint2 and Openbox are pretty cool though. I can see myself coming back to it as I get more savvy over time.
Are there any packages containing the install scripts of the new way to install Arch? I want to be able to install Arch from a running Arch session onto a USB stick/HDD or the like without having to pop the CD in and rebooting.
I guess Virtualbox would be of help with that, by booting the CD inside and popping the USB in the VM session.
But think that without having to use a CD, the install process might be just a little bit faster. Plus, you get to use better programs to partition the USB stick/HDD.
In general, I'm a lazy bastard and I'm too lazy to reboot each time I want to install Arch on a USB. Plus, I am prone to forget complicated things easily, especially after doing it only once.

The package is arch-install-scripts in Extra. I should think the aif is still in there in a relatively usable state if you have trouble with the new scripts.

And I agree wholeheartedly on the usb point; it's nice to install from a pseudo-safe environment.
I just installed Linux Mint. It's amazingly fast, I really like it. The letters on the screen appear really fast when I press the keys, for instance. It's weird, but Windows (and my previous Arch installation) is a lot slower with it.

Y- I- What?
I mean
What sort of a computer do you have if the input delay is long enough to be noticable?
I'm trying to decide what environment to put on my shiny new Arch install. I'll probably go for Openbox...

I've always been fond of ginger myself.

But I try to keep the relationship professional.

I didn't notice any delay until I saw mint was faster. I don't know, it just feels faster. It might just be in my head though.
you either deleted them or changed their permissions.
(or did that to the partitions themselves instead)
Could it have been caused by using sudo nautilus instead of gksudo? I used sudo nautilus to mess around with settings on an openelec sd card.

Just installed Arch the new way, it isn't that much more difficult than before. Did learn a few new things, especially rankmirrors.
What did i miss from ArchLinux? as i'm a newbie i never got it installed
Customizability (building up from scratch) and rolling release. That's what makes Arch stand out.
Oh and the correctness of programming (at least they say that in the description), but you don't notice that in day-to-day work.
oh wow, when i get more into how linux works i might try it out. Actually the things i use in ubuntu are firefox, steam, team fortress 2 and rhythmbox :v:
Has anyone had sync issues with pacman before? Warsow update came out yesterday, package in community was updated today; I updated and get an obscure error (Recieved signal 4) which I assume is Illegal Instruction signal from Linux, but that doesn't help with debugging. I checked the PKGBUILD using abs and the data package was current (version 1.0 instead of 0.6) but the warsow package wasn't (the git repo showed the current PKGBUILD with version 1.0 but I get 0.6 still).
I downloaded the up to date one and installed with makepkg -i, but I get the same error :downs:
Anyone else willing to download the warsow package on Arch and give me some feedback? I'm going to compile with debugging symbols and see what I can see but I want to know if it's just me or if it's a problem with the package.
Looking to install Jolicloud on a really old crappy netbook. Anybody ever used it before?
Looking to install Jolicloud on a really old crappy netbook. Anybody ever used it before?
I assume you mean JoliOS. JoliCloud is the frontend on the website. IIRC they haven't updated anything for about a year, and they've dropped JoliOS support. I'd say whip ChromiumOS on it instead.
MOTHER OF GOD.
Fluxbox allows you to combine ENTIRE WINDOWS into one tabbed window.
I might permanently switch.

wait, do you mean one application window having other tabs that hold other windows from other applications? What's the use of that?

What's the use of tabs in a web browser?
Same shit, except with applications instead of web pages.
wait, do you mean one application window having other tabs that hold other windows from other applications? What's the use of that?
File managers and terminal windows that don't support tabs themselves, for example.
Oh so it's several windows of one application as tabs in a window that serves as a group. Yeah that could be useful.
The way you said it made it appear as though you'd have two unrelated applications in one tabbed window, like one window holding both a file manager tab and a terminal tab. That would be completely useless.
Sounds cool. Gotta try flubox out this week.

The seconds possible too, though.

Eh, for File Managers I usually use something like Total Commander (can't remember the name of the Linux version I usually use), but I can see it being useful for Terminal applications.

Isn't the Linux equivalent of Total Commander called midnight-commander?
midnight commander is a norton commander clone. probably gentoofm or mucommander or emelfm2 or something
