so my motherboard came with a linux distro named 'Winki'
uh
tinki :v:
What the fuck. I tried installing awesome "sudo aptitude install awesome" and once I got it up and running, there was no awesomerc or rc.lua file anywhere except in /usr/share/xpd/whatever. I tried putting the one from the system files into a /home/jack/config/awesome/ directory I created, but when I restarted awesome, it just deleted all tags and didn't work for anything.
Now I'm installing it from git. Wish me luck!
cp -r /etc/xdg/awesome/* $HOME/.config/awesome/
your forgot the .
.config is a hidden folder
I'd suggest cdm instead of SLiM, though. It's really cool. Installation instructions are on the wiki.
lol i forgot i posted my other half of my screen, i was like "Holy Shit! how does he know im using slim! This man is a wizard!"
Why cant you install the amd drivers like .deb instead its in a zip , i have read tuts but i can't figure out on ubuntu how to install them.

I did that. I just forgot to include it in that post.
What was the problem was that I was editing the wrong part of the document as well as forgetting to add names as strings.
Regardless, it's still clunky to use. I'm not too fond of it, honestly. Back to Openbox!
Dammit.
A good friend of mine gifted me CS:GO and it doesn't seem to launch because my video card is too damn old for DirectX 9.5..
Either that, or it's my drivers.
In terms of space (and beyond the initial size of the installation), do wine/playonlinux add a lot of overhead to installed games? And is it alright to put game data in a home directory? (I didn't give myself too much room for growth in my / partition)

also, what's your experience with wine64? Is it best to just use the 32 bit version?
Why cant you install the amd drivers like .deb instead its in a zip , i have read tuts but i can't figure out on ubuntu how to install them.
Unzip it, chmod +x the file, execute it.
Not hard.

That was easy.
Am I the only one who never really had problems with drivers? Everyone always says how ATI drivers on linux are like some sort of immortal puzzle of the gods, but I have honestly never had a bit of trouble.

I got it only working by using these commands:
cd /home/user/Desktop/
wget http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/amd-driver-installer-12-4-x86.x86_64.run
chmod 755 amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run
chmod +x amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run
./amd-driver-installer-12-6-x86.x86_64.run
using stuff like sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle didn't work for me.
In my personal experience, the fglrx packages available in the repo for Ubuntu are just pure shit, not sure why.
Not like the latest ones are any better, but at least they install properly for me.
I use the latest radeon drivers on Gentoo, with Mesa 8.1, seems to work fine. Or fine enough for normal usage, gaming is a problem, but 3D effects, rendering in Blender and that kind of stuff works perfectly fine. Minecraft too :v:
Does anyone mind posting their desktops? Bonus points if it uses awesome; I'm going to make another attempt at making my configuration more usable than my openbox. Here's my Openbox. If anyone wants the conkyrc or whatever, just ask. 4chan doesn't like it, but I think it looks good.
Any good VPN programs for Linux? I used to use Hotspot Shield to access Netflix US, but can't do that on Ubuntu. Also, free is much preferred.
Tor.
Tor.
Tor is for anonymity. Tor is not very fast either depending on which node your connected to. Its also not very "secure" considering that anyone can setup their own node and then use sniffing software on that node to see the traffic going in and out.
I just thought I might state the obvious just in case.
can you post the ISO to it? I wanna poke it in a VM.
it's like built in to the board sorry
although when it comes time to install the motherboard's extra drivers then I'll poke around and see if I can find you my winki

it's supposed to be an OS to fall back to if/when your main OS fucks up

I've never understood desktops, as it were... I would post mine but it's completely black :v:

actually, i3status is something, but I would have to hold down my windows key while taking the screenshot, and that seems a bit cheap
I'm going to force myself to install Arch on my laptop tomorrow.
I just don't know what kind of GUI I want.

Well, with the proprietary drivers, AMD decided to not define a few cards, so when you run "aticonfig", it'll give you the error message "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected". However, the kernel module will work, as well as if you force X to use it, it'll run properly. It'll even work (and show the model of card) if you use the qt gui.

I hate this so much.
It affects the E450 in my laptop, in both Windows and Linux.
For some reason with the new Arch install medium once I get awesome wm running I cannot load a terminal window. To top it off I am not getting any logged or onscreen errors from awesome.
Anyone have any ideas?

What's a good Linux distro to install on my parents net book?
They are not good with computers so I was looking towards something like Linux mint (They certainly wouldn't be able to use crunchbang and similar)

Yeah, try Linux Mint. But even if they're not good with computers, try NOT to instruct them how to do most things, and let them evolve themselves.
I've done that as much as possible with people who suck, and only helping them with the most basic tasks have made them better computer users.

xfce4 with the ACID window manager theme + xfce dusk theme and *some* bits of transparency.

I don't think my mom is a kind of person who will try to figure something out herself. She used windows for a few years now and she never opened anything but Firefox and Microsoft office from the desktop
Why would you install Linux on your parent's computer?
If it works for what they need, let them be.
Other than that got my Rpi set up as a media center/ file host. My apple tv still wrecks it in speed and usability, guess I'll have to wait until I get a home automation kit for this thing to shine.

It was running really slow on xp and they completely wrecked it with viruses recently

Your desktop looks pretty cool, and not too riced up.
also, keep in mind to not take /g/ seriously when posting your desktop.
