General Linux Chat and Small Questions v. Install Arch
4,946 replies, posted
So in order to show respect to this thread's title, I decided to install Arch on a box that's sitting on my desk. I couldn't figure out how to run RAID with Syslinux (it was always missing the operating system for some reason), so I gave up at the moment and I'll set it up later.
So far I really like Pacman, gives you better information than apt and it's very speedy. Arch seems well suited for development with its bleeding edge packages that are easy to install very quickly.
I setup xfce4 with GDM as login manager. Right now I'm just using the open source ATI driver. Gonna work one piece at a time and document what I'm doing, otherwise I'll end up doing it over and over again.
Oh god the 12.10 wallpaper

It's like a blurry version of Star Fox 64's lava world.
Steam Greenlight is accepting linux titles.

So here's the deal: I want to install Linux on my MBP, which I mainly use for school. I have no experience whatsoever with Linux.
So, what's a good distro to go with?

Fedora and Arch sound quite appealing, but I want your opinion on it, FP.

Uhh, why not dick around with them in Virtualbox?
I have no idea what Virtualbox is - That's how inexperienced I am.

Its a virtualisation tool. in other words, you "emulate" an Operating system, just like a gameboy/n64 emulator.

If he starts calling it an emulator now, it's on you.
I won't, don't worry.

I hate how Linux Mint audio goes crazy when you play videos with spotify open. Not sure if it's pulseaudio's fault, as it happens only in Mint...

Parallels is way better imho.

Isn't that only for Macs?

Spotify Premium on Gentoo (using pure ALSA), all files seem to have been pitched one octave higher than it should be. Local files in mpd sound fine.
i have no idea.

Ah. Did not see that.
Downloaded a few .iso's, but don't have any CD's or thumbdrives at my disposal right now - I downloaded Fedora and Tails, really looking forward to finally trying out a Linux OS.

Net installations might be an option if you are willing to set up a server. This will also save you from burning so many CDs if you decide to try quite a few distros. I've never used a mac and never actually set up a net install before, but it shouldn't be too difficult...
Wow, Black Mesa's performance in linux is incredible. I mean, it's the first source game that I can play maxed out and with DX9 at a smooth framerate and without crashes. Go check it out, it's unbelievable.

Get a handful of decent 8GB flashdrives, or use virtualization software.
Burning cd's takes time, and if something bad happens during burning, then you have a ghetto frisbee that hurts like hell to grab.
I burned Fedora to a Compact Disc and ran it, everything works. Yay Linux! Once I install it to the harddrive, I'm going to download BMS and play the shit out of it.

any idea why my fonts look this bad? it's just on facepunch as well. I'm using Debian sid with infinality patches and I've installed the microsoft fonts from the repository.

Font render, search for it in your Config Menu, because it varies from DE to DE.

I don't use a DE, and I've already tried to configure with dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config. The problem is it seems to only be facepunch that messes up this bad.
I found a workaround by just setting all fonts to Droid Sans in firefox and not letting pages use their own fonts, but I'm not sure if it's a good fix.
Anyone have an idea why the AMD proprietary drivers have the wrong resolution set on Ubuntu 12.04 before login screen?
Sure, it only affects like an entire 3-second moment, but I'm a bit curious.
Before I installed the drivers, it had the proper resolution during that whole Ubuntu logo thing with the dots under it, but now it looks like 640x480 that has been stretched.
So hey, uh, I partitioned my HDD and installed Fedora on it from a Live CD. However, I don't have rEFIt, or any other bootloader for that matter. Can I do without it? If no, should I have installed it prior to installing Fedora, or can I just do it now?

I get the same thing on my HD 4670 (Not running Ubuntu anymore though).
I've wondered the same, because everything else except the bootup menu seems to work just fine.
[editline]15th September 2012[/editline]
And only with the proprietary drivers. Open source are fine.

I'm thinking it hasn't initialized something at that part of the boot. AFAIK, the proprietary drivers are kernel modules, no idea how those are loaded, and the OSS drivers are built straight into the kernel.
