Okay, so I'm trying to make GrUB work properly as instructed in this post: forums.fedoraforum.org/showpost.php?p=1531249&postcount=3 I boot my MacBook with Cmd+S, but when I do mkdir /media/root it just says the /media directory doesn't exist. Wat do?
Keep in mind that you can't just copy and paste the commands over word for word, you will need to change them to fir your partition scheme. In other news, I made a crunchbang usb stick and hopefully it will work with persistence. [editline]16th September 2012[/editline] IT'S ALIVEEEEEEE
Mac computers use UEFI instead of a standard BIOS at boot time. When you install windows on a mac, there's a utility on the mac computer that you run that will enable BIOS compatibility mode in the UEFI. This will allow the mac booloader to boot the legacy MBR on your drive. My guess is that the UEFI isn't in BIOS compatibility mode. When you installed ubuntu it simply put grub on the MBR, like it should. The MBR isn't being booted because UEFI isn't in BIOS compatibility mode. You have two options here. 1. You can set the UEFI to be in BIOS compatibility mode and everything should boot fine. 2. You can install grub into the UEFI bootloader. GRUB2 supports booting from UEFI. From what I've seen you have to put some of GRUB files into a EFI partition that should already be on the hdd. Option 1 is much easier and will be the be the least trouble. Option 2 is more "proper", but it might be more of a pain.
1. You can set the UEFI to be in BIOS compatibility mode and everything should boot fine.
Can you tell me more specifically how I would go about doing this? Bear in mind, this is my first time fucking around with Linux. :v:
To be honest I'm not quite sure. I've never done this myself. If I were you I would look around to see how to do it. Also, I believe bootcamp might have something to do with this, but I'm not sure.
Oh man this is bad. I tried installing Fedora from my Live CD but I forgot to turn on the charger so the computer ran out of battery in the middle of installation. I tried reviewing any potential damage, and now there's a partition on my HDD that can't be deleted. I can't even format my HDD to get rid of it. It's approximately 6.2GB and in a format called "Linux-change/swap" (Directly translated from danish, anyway). What the fuck do I do?
boot linux installer up again, open a terminal, and use fdisk/cfdisk to delete it. works every time. if fdisk doesen't work, then you're fucked
I always swap it out and delete it with gparted, it never blocked in that way for me.
Installed Sabayon 10 on my netbook. even though their package manager is still somewhat slow, the system is much faster than ever before.
Unity is starting to grow on me, but I still haven't decided on what I like the most. I can't imagine this on a desktop though, and holy fuck some operations are slow.
Unity is starting to grow on me, but I still haven't decided on what I like the most. Canoncial (I believe?) have announced increased performance and all that for 12.10, but as of so far, it's still lacking behind massively in the performance compared to all other DEs.
Giving linux another chance (Mint w/ MATE) It's so fast. Even my browser just seems to do things infinitely faster than what Win8 can achieve, even under extreme de-bloating
A bit late, but... I, what? I've just got my first ever dual-core CPU and Win8 is incredibly fast and smooth, now you say that Linux is faster even in extreme conditions?! OMG wat to do

OMG wat to do
Dual boot, like the above user mentioned If you have more than one HDD this should be piss easy, and just a tiny fraction harder if you don't.
Dual boot, like the above user mentioned If you have more than one HDD this should be piss easy, and just a tiny fraction harder if you don't.
Most mature and user centric distributions provides the user with a slider if it's just one HDD.
Most mature and user centric distributions provides the user with a slider if it's just one HDD.
dualbooting with 2 HDD's is way easier, because then the grub MBR won't touch the windows MBR, and everything will be sunshine and rainbows
I have Ubuntu 12.04. Trying to plug into my Ps3 controller via BlueTooth to play on a PS1 emulator I have installed PCSX and QtSixA, and I can connect to QtSixA and I can find it in the list of controllers or whatever it's called on PCSX. But the buttons and different controls doesn't seem to respond when in-game. When I try to configure the controls it only gives me the Axis -6 value. Halp.
Imagine this, but with like more than one person. Heck, if you made it into a city and projected the programs onto walls of skyscrapers, Hackers actually predicted the future.
Genious. Finally I will be able to store my files in a crate in a 3d world. :v:
you can it's called a printer
you can it's called a printer
I think you missed the point. Besides, printers store the data in a write-only mode, and the only way to change anything, or read from it, is to take it apart. And it doesn't apply to all printers anyway.
printers store the data in a write-only mode
So, what you're saying is, if I print something on a piece of paper, I can't read it.
So, what you're saying is, if I print something on a piece of paper, I can't read it.
... The point of your post went right over my head, by a mile or so. I apologize :v:
... The point of your post went right over my head, by a mile or so. I apologize :v:
You said that printers store data in write-only, which means no read access. That would mean that after printing on paper, because I have no read access, I would be unable to read the paper. I do believe printers store data in either 777 or 770 (technically you can't really execute data on a paper, because it's a fucking piece of paper).

I do get the joke you're making though.

Alright, so appareantly there's a config file I am supposed to edit. But I need to open it with root privilegies since it's whateverit'scalledsoitdoesn'tletmeeditit. How do I do this? I've tried sudo INSERTFILENAMEANDLOCATIONHERE
sudo yourtexteditor yourfilename use nano if on terminal, or gedit if on x
Alright, that worked. Thanks. Trying to get my fingerprint reader to work. I don't know wich one it is but I know the name of my laptop is TravelMate5730, does anyone know if it's possible?
I want such Operating System.
Lol it's not the operating system's task, it could be a networked shell that connects to a server, so with that you don't need powerful computers, just do cloud-computing. For privacy reasons you don't need to store all data on the server so hackers still have to work to access some of your stuff.
