Why do Linux desktop compositors suck so badly? The only one I've used that doesn't kill performance is xcompmgr. Compiz and Kwin just run like absolute shit even if I turn off all the fancy features (including shadows and transparency), and its even worse if I'm forced to use LLVM-pipe for some reason.
Kwin runs bad for you? I've used it on my netbook with absolute bliss. It's blazingly fast, at least compared to what else is out there.
Obviously mate is much more resource friendly.
Okay so I got a small problem and I hope facepunch can help me out!
I got a Linux GNOME (Back Tracker 5) on a bootable dvd it works fine but it's extremely slow, now I want to make a bootable USB I tried a few programs (ISO to USB) (Unetbootit) they didn't work so i'm wondering what program I need to use to make a bootable USB / HDD for this linux version

Last time I tried KDE with compositing enabled it just ran like absolute ass. To be fair, this was on my old Acer with the Radeon Mobility HD 3200, w/ the open source drivers. It'd probably be better on my ThinkPad but I don't really want to use KDE.
Can you setup network bridges like in windows ?
So that you can use your laptop like a router and give your pc internet via the ethernet port?

To be fair, that is a pretty shitty card too, so I wouldn't blame the software on that one :v:
However, if you're not into using Kwin (You can of course use other DE's with Kwin as Window Manager replacement), then there's no reason to use it anyway.

Yes, of course you can do this. It's a little bit more weird than in Windows though, one thing Linux systems really have to get better at. What DE are you using?
I am using zorin os6 with gnome classic, but i am thinking to put on linux mint or ubuntu.
Gonna have to reinstall my Arch setup at work.
Maybe gonna use Gnome 3.4 or DWM.
Today I tried out gnome3.4, and Its gotten better than 3.0.
Anyone know any good gtk-2.0/gtk-3.0 themes?

Zukitwo and Orion are pretty nice, but you can always search on gnome-look.org

yeah, but my point of the original post is that all of the compositing WMs are power sucking monsters which I don't understand, when Windows and OS X can do it much faster on equivalent hardware. Are drivers really that bad?
What is the best alternative to unity on ubuntu 12.04? I remember seeing one before that looked nice but I couldn't find it.
just installed awesome on my new arch install - I'm fucking terrified
took me a few minutes to figure out how window management worked and I'm still exclusively opening programs through the terminal because I don't know how else to do it :v:

Mod4 + R
I sort of want to just get rid of my menu and only have the Alt + F2 (remapped to Super + S in my case) functionality :v
I originally got Mint because I thought I would need the menu, but I never fucking use it.
Might do a clean Debian install some day, don't really need Mint (although I still think it's a far better than having to use Ubuntu)

uh
do you remember what it looked like?

It had the same style, but with a taskbar at the bottom. I really can't get used to the side bar on unity.

MATE? Cinnamon?

What's wrong with ubuntu
What's wrong with ubuntu
I don't like Unity, plain and simple
I know I can change that, but I'd rather have cinnamon be more supported
I also don't like where canonical are heading with Ubuntu much, either
I'm fine with just about any distro, but so long as I am going to be using it everyday I would prefer to make my own decisions, rather than undo someone elses. This isn't to say one common configuration is bad, and for developers it is probably a godsend (I would expect Valve to target Ubuntu for its relativly stable and large userbase) but I can't believe Steam wouldn't run on any distro (the support possibly lacking upstream). I only fear that the port will leave me booting into Ubuntu instead of Windoze when I'm up for a game of TF2...
Anyone certain of Valve's intentions? If enough people want Steam on a particular distro I can only assume it will happen.
I think i gonna stay with linux mint, also the awesome thing is that with linux i can always change the looks etc of something if i don't like it.
I installed Linux Mint on my main rig and its really fast i think even faster than windows 8 when booting up.

Alot is wrong with ubuntu.
Ever since they dropped gnome2 for unity, and is adding ads to the search feature.
I know you can remove them, but why Install a system, and then bother to remove half of its packages?

Yeah, I'm really not a fan of that shit. I realize it's "opt out" (although it seems to require uninstalling several different packages according to some comments I've seen) but this kind of advertising should definitely be opt in.
Canonical did good on the performance of Unity in 12.10 beta 2, but those ads are kinda 'ehh', but you can disable 'em.

They'd sure need to improve Unity's performance, it's miles behind other DE's in 3D applications thanks to desktop effects.

Well, the performance is better on 14.10 than in 14.04, and the dash boot is a lot faster, adn the default web-apps in 6.8.0 is kinda nice. I guess it is now kinda usable.

It's better, but it's far from being usable when you're doing anything else than just surfing facebook or looking at text documents. It's simply not optimized enough with the speeds you get. Even Kwin beats it with miles.
They need to make their own WM instead of using Compiz. Compiz is a bloated, buggy, unoptimized mess.
