They need to make their own WM instead of using Compiz. Compiz is a bloated, buggy, unoptimized mess.
Unity would gain A LOT with another WM. They have the strong idea that the effects are essential, but there are better VM's with effects and very organized and optimized. I just hope they manage to get this idea, before newcomers to linux get a wrong idea about it.

Its really smooth and slick..I believe its based on mutter. In fact, wasn't Unity originally based on Clutter/Mutter or something?
I still don't understand what a DE really offers, other than a reasonable (usually undesirable) version of most essential applications. DE's by nature seem bloated, so comparing their relative levels of bloat seems somewhat futile. As a quick poll, vote agree if you don't use a DE, and disagree if you do.
It depends on the person, really. Others, like you and I, like to pick and choose just what they want and choose to use a minimal window manager. Some people just want a working system and instead of looking through each DE, would rather just install gnome or KDE and get a fully working desktop.

It is just choices. If you have been a long time with linux, and you know the working way of a terminal or a command line, it's easier. For me, im just used to have something visual to fancy my screen when i boot my computer. Damn ninja Lyoko.

Just the kdebase-meta package in Portage (and all relevant dependencies, so probably all of kdelibs)
What does /24 mean after an ip address? I googled it and alot of answers are about masking, octets and terms which are going over my head. If using for a scan, for instance 192.168.1.0/24, does it mean scan from 192.168.1.0 to 192.168.1.255? Edit: Oh nvm, found a good explanation.
Any advice on how to stream audio from my desktop to an ipod? The best solution I've found so far is running a mumble server, but there's about a 100ms delay and it's only mono audio. I initially wanted to use the RTP multicasting built into pulseaudio, but my router shits itself as soon as I turn that on and I couldn't find a way to play that on an ipod. So, anyone know of a better way? EDIT: As for why I want to do this: The cable on my main pair of headphones is bad, so while I'm waiting on a replacement I only have a pair of earbuds which don't reach my tower.
There are mentions on OMG Ubuntu comments that jockey and nvidia-common are being updated, but I just got the nvidia-common. Could this be the beta week? (I know it's not a very trusty source, and less if it comes from the community)
Finally got back into crunchbang, and I realized why I quit last time. Does anyone know of anyway to control the brightness through a gui program? Also, what are some good fonts, I'm not liking the defaults very much.
Re-installed Arch Linux again, no matter the OS it always feels fresh and speedy afterwards. Behold: [img_thumb]http://bit.ly/SObqiR[/img_thumb] I'm running awesome + xfce-panel. It was a pain in the ass to get notifications (steam and naughty's in particular) to show up on my main screen though.

I hear you with steam, I gave up until we get native support. Hurry up Valve!

Migrated my laptop from sysvinit to systemd finally. Time for my big machine. :l
I'm gonna change to systemd, when sysvinit is getting officially replaced by systemd
I've been wanting to switch my laptop to systemd for weeks now, I just keep putting it off
Any upsides to using systemd over OpenRC? I thought about parallel service startup, but that's fixed (somewhat) and works perfectly on my netbook.
just use subsonic
Cool program, but doesn't really do what I need.
Just installed and got done configuring Cinnamon, it's beautiful:
I'm running a live session of Lubuntu on an old laptop, an Acer 1355LM. It's really fast, but i can't install it because i ran out of hard disks (5 Hitachi Travelstar). Wish i could find a cheap alternative.
I plan on installing Linux on a 32 GB thumb drive since I don't have a laptop anymore and I'm usually within reach of a computer. However - I want to be able to virtualize off of my thumb drive as well. Does anyone know how I would go about installing a bootable version of Linux as well as having the ability to virtualize that copy? I've been looking at this and it seems a bit iffy since it's for LiveCDs. Persistence isn't recommended if I'm going to be virtualizing either: http://www.howtogeek.com/65888/create-a-persistent-bootable-and-virtualized-linux-usb-drive-with-lili/

The school network seems to be blocking the ports for Steam and Minecraft servers, and I wonder if there's any way to connect to them via some proxy or something on Lubuntu?
The school network seems to be blocking the ports for Steam and Minecraft servers, and I wonder if there's any way to connect to them via some proxy or something on Lubuntu?
VPN server & client.
VPN server & client.
Do you recommend any, and how do I use it?
maybe you shouldn't play games at school
You could use an ssh tunnel or an sock5 proxy through ssh.
I can boot in to linux via LiveCD in school but I can't seem to get an internet connection for some reason, I don't think it has to do with the drivers either because I can't even connect on my own laptop if I use their network
maybe you shouldn't play games at school
It's during break, so I have alot of time to kill.
