Real men arrange pebbles into a program and keep re-arranging the pebbles to do things in the program.
My experience is a bit weak compared to yours but here it goes: today in my German class the teacher asked me to identify if the CDs are empty. So she gave me like 5-7 CDs and as soon as I touched them, one dumb facebook whore started going ape shit with "check the other side omg omg omg". I didn't show any attention to her because the first CD was Flight Simulator 2000, the second was Flight Simulator 2000 CD2, the third one was Toca Race Driver or something, the fourth one was some Nokia software and the fifth one was some graphics driver. All the time I kept telling teacher what is on those CDs that dumb bitch kept screaming her "other side" bullshit. She even had balls to say that I'm dumb because it's not fucking rocket science to identify such things by just looking at the fucking print on CD Jesus Christ.
This is not computer illiterate, but worth a mention. During the IT class she kept checking one of our classmates photos and laughing at them because of:
a) she tried to look popular (she isn't one of those popular chicks, but she is trying)
b) in one photo she is kissing a dude (I better not mention that the bitch that laughed has STD or somethin')
c) in other photo she is caught with some dude surprised. I mean, their views weren't focused and shit.
So she kept laughing and laughing non stop, telling every other Facebook whore to check those photos. They kept on laughing and making fun of her. Being a fucking loser that I am, I told nothing, but my rage was rising like fucking crazy.
Sorry for a long message, had to get this anger of my chest.
TL;DR dumb bitch doesn't know obvious things about CDs and she (being a facebook whore) makes fun of less popular girls.
I understand but in 15 years i have the same chance (if not more) of loosing nor scratching the disk making it unusable. Now you may say what about the CD keys? I bet if valve would go bankrupt they would email the CD keys you've bought, surely they would come up with something so no major harm is done. Then you said that buying a digital copy is a temporary rent, well digital or not; i don't see myself playing the same game for 15 years.
Meanwhile, i will continue using steam because it makes things so much easier. I press a button, steam takes my money, installs the game and keeps it updated.
I don't see myself playing the same game forever either. But a classic is a classic, Nostalgia is Nostalgia. You know where this is going. My dad had the whole Spider-Man collection of Comicbooks and a huge load of the related Marvel superhero comics too. I became a major fan and i asked him something in the way of "did you have spider-man when you were a kid?" He went on do describe his collection resulting in me holding back my tears since i was shocked that he didn't hold on to them, at least for me... To this day, the used books shop still has some of the 1500+ comics for sale with his name in the top corner. Every time i find one, i'm reminded of this.
This is one reason for me to go for boxed copies. I never know who will need them later on. If i won't, then my kid will. If not him, then my sisters kid. I think of gaming as a valuable part of human culture and i'm gonna preserve whatever comes my way so that at least my lineage can find joy in it. I also know how to handle CD's... that helps a lot. Keeping a shelf for them isn't a bad plan either if you don't wanna lose them.
You do your thing and i do mine, it's no problem. i'm not basing my collection of retail on paranoia alone, besides the nerdy reasons, it's also cheaper than steam in my country. (the 1 buck = 1€ plan severely rapes the basic idea of steam.)
So, yeah. That's my whole reasoning i think. [sp] HOLY SHIT am I a humongous nerd or what!? Holy SHIT![/sp]
Real men load their programs off tape cassettes on a Commodore 64.

I still buy all my games on Steam. My reasoning is simple: if Valve does go under, I can always pirate the games I own, and be free from prosecution. It might not actually be 100% legal, but it would be enough of a gray area that nobody would risk prosecuting me. And, it would be 100% ethical, which is what really matters.
However, despite owning it multiple times on Steam already, I did buy an original box copy of Half-Life: GOTY. Simply because it's that awesome.

Well. That's one solution that must be recognized, for sure. I do have about 100 games on steam which is like 3 times what i have on my shelf. The difference between the two is that I can accept losing those 100. I cannot and will not accept losing my shelf. I can see the sensibility of using steam. it's perfect for almost anyone. We're all different in this, but i'm very extreme and conservative towards my games... It's insane, but that's how i work.

You CAN see whether a disk is empty or not by checking the reading side. There's s difference in how the light reflects off of it.
But since they had labels anyway...
film far exceeds Blu-Ray quality
Can we get a bit more on topic?

REAL MEN don't watch movies. REAL MEN infiltrate the studio and watch the movie LIVE.
And for CGI films? THEY STILL DO IT.
shoot 35mm erry day
Valve said that if they go bust they will release a patch that will make every downloaded game DRM free.
According to wikipedia:
Gabe Newell, CEO of Valve, said in a post on the Steam User Forums that "Unless there was some situation I don't understand, we would presumably disable authentication before any event that would preclude the authentication servers from being available." He added, "We've tested disabling authentication, and it works."

There is no DRM on most of my games :colbert:
Except Crysis.
for games like CS:S that would mean no more steamids or unlimited steamids and than griefers would run a muck. I know they could ban IP addresses but those can easily be changed.
