You know what else annoys me about USB devices? Unplugging a USB mouse will wake up a sleeping computer. Really annoying when you're trying to go to sleep, realize the LED from your laptop's mouse is shining on the ceiling, unplug it and hear the laptop whir as it wakes back up. A trivial annoyance, but still fucking annoying.
Mine doesn't. But probably because its so old. It just turns off usb in sleep.
"My friend's computer has so many gigs of ram that he has to have a 64-bit operating system!" "6 gigs of DDR4 ram"
Maybe he mixed up ram and vram?
"My friend's computer has so many gigs of ram that he has to have a 64-bit operating system!" "6 gigs of DDR4 ram"
First one is relatively accurate - 32-bit Windows can only do 4 gb of memory. Second one might just be a mis-statement, or confusion with GDDR4, and wouldn't actually be too impossible in any case - DDR4 is expected to be out in 2012. It should start at 2133mHz, and scale up to 3200mHz, if Wikipedia is to be believed.
It should start at 2133mHz, and scale up to 3200mHz, if Wikipedia is to be believed.
Is faster ram really that important?
Is faster ram really that important?
I would think, all my apps were much faster with my new computer. Though it may be in conjunction with the new parts. I went from DDR to DDR3
Is faster ram really that important?
Actually, yes. Memory speed is one of the main bottlenecks right now, along with hard drive latency.

But yeah, he mixed up the vram.
Today, at school, one of my friends decided to get out a laptop and start listening to pandora. Pandora froze while changing ads, I assume because it was on safari. He sees it and says "Oh, the RSS feed broke." :(
No, REAL MEN figure it out with "cat /proc/cpuinfo".
real men send butterflies inside the case to retrieve the system specs
http://www.facepunch.com/threads/1026528-Help-With-1400-Gaming-Computer Sorry for no content, just reposting this.
For a minute, I was trying to figure out what was so illiterate about it. I mean, the build isn't that great, as was pointed out, but I wouldn't have called it stupid. Then I looked at the usernames.
So my build is shitty, and I've wasted 3 days of making it when the people helping me do not know what they are doing?
No, the real problem is that THIS ISN'T THE THREAD FOR ASKING QUESTIONS, THIS IS THE THREAD FOR MAKING FUN OF DUMBASSES WHO DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT COMPUTERS.
I'm really sorry about it. I won't do it again, and was stupid for posting that in the first place.
No, the real problem is that THIS ISN'T THE THREAD FOR ASKING QUESTIONS, THIS IS THE THREAD FOR MAKING FUN OF DUMBASSES WHO DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT COMPUTERS.
....but think they know everything there's nothing wrong with not knowing a lot about computers.
Alright, I have some more content for the thread, again from my boss :v: I've been talking to him about a laptop I would like to get, in the event they (my bosses) decide to go purchase me the laptop I want (mainly so that I can work at home a little more)... I already made a thread about it and a few FP'ers mentioned a pretty good laptop there, so I asked him about that one... Unfortunately they're not going to get me that one, but they will purchase me an HP laptop anyway, probably a model with more conservative specs, that will belong to the company; it won't be mine... Anyhow, when I showed him the specs of the HP I wanted, he said -and I quote-: "... Anyway, what the hell do you plan to do with it anyway?? It's not like you can play ANY games in that thing! Laptops aren't built for that kind of stuff, for that you definitely need an Nvidia graphics card and a huge-ass (he made a "this big" kind of gesture with his hands) power supply!" I refrained from saying anything and showing him a link with Alienware gaming laptops, but my "facepalm face" was so obvious he spent all afternoon mocking me about it... :v:
....but think they know everything there's nothing wrong with not knowing a lot about computers.
Without that little bit on the end this thread is just a egotistical circlejerk :buddy: Anyway, I've been teaching my ~70 year old Grandmother how to use a computer, within a day we got her on the Internet, using Facebook to send messages to her son/ daughters. Strangely, she types faster than my ~40 year old father who I have been teaching for years. All hope is not lost in my family of varied illiteracy.
....but think they know everything there's nothing wrong with not knowing a lot about computers.
I'm allowed to shorted it when I'm yelling at someone.
Strangely, she types faster than my ~40 year old father who I have been teaching for years.
Probably from years of using a typewriter, and not being able to make mistakes on them without having to repeat the whole damn thing over again.
Usually when it comes to computers I consider myself a power-user, however, my networking illiteracy has landed me in deep shit. To make a long story short, I agreed that I would set up a server for my debate team to store research and such. However, I have no clue how I would go about doing this. I thought this would just entail setting up some dropbox accounts, however, they actually want me to set up a box on the schools money. I know not the difference between an FTP and a HTTP server, so I'd figured I'd look for advice from the networking literate. What kind of server should I set up, how, and how much money would it cost? My needs are as follows: - A web interface that can be logged onto with a web browser. - An easy GUI. - At least 250GB's of space. -The ability to split space between user accounts. This probably seems very basic to most of you, but if any of you know of any useful guides, it would be awesome.
Well, today they started putting in the wiring at our theater for the digital projectors. So they wouldn't have to open the upstairs door, they just cut some cat 5 cable and tied the door open to a railing that was on the staircase. Well, my boss comes in, and she is infuriated when she sees it. She yells, "WHY ARE YOU CUTTING UP POWER CABLES TO THE PROJECTORS? AND WHY DO YOU HAVE THEM IN THE CEILING, TOO? WE HAVE OUTLETS ON THE WALL!" I swear I facepalm every single time she comes upstairs to projection.

If you want to go even cheaper (Hardware and software costs), FreeNAS is piss easy to setup and everything is done through a WebGUI. If you have an old Pentium 3 laying around, I'd give it a shot on that before deciding. If you need help, their guides are fairly well written. FreeNAS is great, It's been a while since I used it but it should fit your needs just fine.
So if I set up FreeNAS, will I be able to log on and access my files from anywhere, or will I need to set up a domain or something?
You won't NECESSARILY need to set up a domain. But you need to forward the appropriate ports through your router to the server for remote access. A domain name is simply for convenience sake. However, if your going to have other people access it, you might want to set up a free domain name, just because "debateserver.dns.org" is a whole lot easier to remember than "209.168.43.123" especially if your classmates are a little less tech-savvy.
Well my college finally got Windows 7 installed on the computers. Only took them 5 weeks to do the 4 computers in our class

This is from some years ago. I remember as kids, my brother and I would use the internet at school or a library to download cheat codes for our playstation or N64 games. So, as we were going through the grocery store, my brother happened upon the rack of free CDs you could get that had the old 56k browser trial software. So, he grabbed a disc and when we returned home, he asked my mom if he could install it. She tried explaining to him that we'd have to get a phone line and modem to get the internet to work, but he seemed convinced that the internet was contained on the disc, and he just wanted to install it to get some cheat codes. Looking back on that, I get a good laugh. He's an IT major now and holds a high paying job.

Well, if we're doing "stupid shit we thought back in the day", I may as well make myself content: Christmas. 1998. I was about six or seven. My aunt got me a brand-new Game Boy Color and Pokemon Blue. Well, Blue was sold-out, so I got a card saying "we'll send it in the mail as soon as the preorder comes in". I was still ecstatic. I opened up the Game Boy, expecting to be able to play the crummy built-in games like Solitaire or something. Took me forever to realize that my Game Boy... had no games. I just assumed it would be like a full computer, with multiple games on hard drive. Silly me. Coincidentally, I found my old Game Boy Advance while I was digging for parts for my new PC project. Guess what game was in it? Pokemon. Fucking. Blue.
