DINGDINGDING WINNER I wish I had something more to give you, but I don't.
Finally, My obsessive watching of ZP has pay´d off. Happy day
[editline]28th November 2010[/editline] I just e-mailed my IT department to figure out why DropBox isn't working (sits on Connecting... forever). This is what I received: An "illegal file distribution program?" :wtc:
ask for 50GB of space on your college thing. If he says no, ask for dropbox. Argue and defeat
inb4 no one realized I was trolling.
[img_thumb]http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6769272/trolls.png[/img_thumb] I'd say this pretty much sums up what just transpired.
ask for 50GB of space on your college thing. If he says no, ask for dropbox. Argue and defeat
I've asked them repeatedly for more space. They deny it every time. My web folder is spammed with thousands of text files with the contents of "LOL U MAD" because I felt like filling up the space. Sending a counter-e-mail now to try to get Dropbox working.
Tell them that DropBox isn't for sharing files, it's for syncing files.
Tell them that you would like to speak to the network administrator directly as he is wrong. Emailing him just isn't as effective.
Tell them that DropBox isn't for sharing files, it's for syncing files.
It's both
Tell them that you would like to speak to the network administrator directly as he is wrong. Emailing him just isn't as effective.
I'll have to consider it. Here's the conversation.
Dear [IGNORANT FUCKWIT], Dropbox is a program for synchronizing files across computers via a secure server. Only by placing items in the public folder of the "dropbox" can others access the files. Right now, I use Dropbox for a minor project not used for school purposes, something that I cannot do with my college-provided web space as it is against the rules. I'm not entirely sure how something like this can be considered an "illegal file distribution program," because it clearly is not. If you'd like to learn more about the program and what Dropbox is, visit their website for more information (https://www.dropbox.com/). I'm somewhat curious, was this program ever used in the past for piracy? That's the only thing I can think of that you mean by "illegal file distribution." Sincerely, [REDACTED]

Dear [REDACTED], Dropbox appears to be offline, as I receive an error when I try to go there. Perhaps that's the problem. Sincerely, [IGNORANT FUCKWIT]
Upon examining the problem on my own laptop, I am greeted with a HTTP 502 Bad Gateway error from the school's proxy server. Changing proxy servers doesn't help. Going on other websites and asking around, I find that Dropbox is indeed online, and that it's not a problem on my end, because the HTTP 502 error indicates a Server error.
Dear [IGNORANT FUCKWIT], Upon examining the problem with my own laptop, I receive an HTTP 502 Bad Gateway error from proxy2.[REDACTED].edu. Could something be wrong with the proxy server? Sincerely, [REDACTED]

Dear [REDACTED], An HTTP 502 error indicates a problem on your end. There's nothing wrong with the proxies. Try clearing your catch [sic] and restarting the computer. If that doesn't work, bring the computer to the HelpDesk so we can take a look at it. Sincerely, [IGNORANT FUCKWIT]

Dear [IGNORANT FUCKWIT],
10.5 Server Error 5xx Response status codes beginning with the digit "5" indicate cases in which the server is aware that it has erred or is incapable of performing the request. Except when responding to a HEAD request, the server SHOULD include an entity containing an explanation of the error situation, and whether it is a temporary or permanent condition. User agents SHOULD display any included entity to the user. These response codes are applicable to any request method.
This is taken from the official version 1.1 definition of the hyper-text transfer protocol (HTTP/1.1 RFC 2616 Fielding, et al.). The complete RFC 2616 can be found at http://www.w3.org/Protocols/HTTP/1.1/rfc2616.pdf if you need more information. Sincerely, [REDACTED]
I think I might have broken them, because they haven't replied yet.
Punch them in their face.
Hey, wait, they just replied.
Dear [REDACTED], Please stop spamming us with messages about this topic. Either attempt to fix the problem on your end, or bring your computer in so a professional can look at it. We will not tolerate any more messages from you regarding this problem if you will not even attempt to correct the issue at hand. Clear your cache, restart your computer, and the problem should be fixed. Sincerely, [THE MOTHERFUCKING NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR]
I don't think I can reason with this guy if I saw him face-to-face. [editline]28th November 2010[/editline]
Punch them in their face.
Seriously thinking about it after this.
Did they really just tell you to restart your computer over this? Excuse me whilst I fetch my machete.
You should go up to him and prove that clearing cache and restarting doesn't work as well as trying this on another computer. If he still doesn't get it through his head, then commence the face punching.
Stop trolling, I'm very against trolling.
Contact his superior, and inform him that you have attempted to resolve this issue, but the "highly-skilled and highly-paid" technicians are being exceptionally uncooperative.
monk, i see what you did there... [sp]you rated yourself dumb multiple times, to check if other people would have blindly rated you the same, as it usually happens. A clever little social experiment on the phenomenon known as bandwagon.[/sp] amirite?
yes YES [editline]29th November 2010[/editline]
inb4 no one realized I was trolling.
Ah, such a clever subversion, well played sir. Wait no, you're just backpedalling.
Do they have some sort of phone number?
I'll call them tomorrow. They'd just closed when [THE MOTHERFUCKING NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR] e-mailed. Also, DFEOJM tells me that it's just me.

This is what I received: An "illegal file distribution program?" :wtc:
Not illegal in the sense that you are thinking. Illegal as in not allowed by your IT department. Just like Bittorrent isn't illegal if you are downloading legal things with it, but if your university or IT department don't allow it it is "illegal" to the university or to the IT department. They were not saying that it was an illegal file distribution program as in the cops are going to come and arrest you for using dropbox.
"I still don't get how to post under someone on reddit" "Uhh....reply?" "Ooooohhhhhhh" :suicide: [editline]29th November 2010[/editline] :downs:

My friend tried to convince me his iPod touch was stronger than my custom built gaming pc because he could play the nazi zombies app on it [editline]28th November 2010[/editline] btw; he's a huge mac fan and doesn't understand how shit his macbook is compared to my computer

If you should continue to refuse to cooperate in regards to something that should be your job, I will be forced to escalate the problem to your supervisor. I have been nothing but patient thus far. the other day a kid in my math class told me that when you get a virus, the first thing it checks is your history in your webrowser and if you have gone to bad sites it will infect your computer but if you haven't, the virus will leave your computer and not do any damage to it
