Recently, I've been getting these random FPS drops in a lot of games. Like, it's running fine, all smooth and stuff, until it drops down to like 15 FPS, stays like that for about 10 or so seconds, then goes back to normal and then happens every minute or so. I've had this happen to me before, but then I opened up my PC, cleaned off all the dust in there and it's been working fine after that. But it started happening again recently and this time, dusting it off didn't help. I really don't know what else could I do to fix this.
My specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q6600 2.40 GHz
3.25 GB of RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 320 MB.
I have the same problem
except the slowdowns happen every 5-10 minutes and they last for a good 6-8 minutes :frown:
Download hwmonitor. Play your game and when it starts the frame drops, open up hwmonitor, screenshot the temps and post it here.
just open HWMonitor before you start playing, quit when it starts slowing down then screenshot it
that way we'll have both the idle and load temps
Alright I used hwmonitor and got this.
When I wasn't doing anything, had no games or any stuff like that running:

And during one of these low framerate moments:

100ºC is pretty hot you should look into an aftermarket cooler.
I had a 8600 GTS, the stock cooler provided insufficient heat dissipation and cooling.
You need to get a better heatsink and fan, or remove the heatsink cover and zip-tie a 80mm fan to it like I did :v:
I read somewhere that changing the thermal paste or something on my graphics card can help.
Should I try to do that or should I just try getting a better fan or whatever?
Did you ever take the cooler off the graphics card? If you know how to do it correctly, it wouldn't hurt, but I doubt it would help much, you'd probably get a 5ºC decrease at most with some high quality paste.
Download Rivatuner and spin that fan up to 70-100% on your graphics card. That might fix the problem for you. It did for me, and did on my older computers aswell (except I run it at 65% at all time, but I have a really nice fan on mine)
Get more case cooling if possible, it helps everything in your PC.
I don't know how hot the Q6600 can get before it gets into the "danger zone".
83ºC is A LOT when your pc is in idle mode (not doing anything) for the 8800gts.
Applying a high end thermal paste and running the run at 100% will not improve much on the 8600 GTS, you need a more efficient heatsink and fan.
OP just clean the dust out of your heatsinks
I hate how every time someone's overheating the only answers anyone gives is OMG SPEND MONEY when you can fix it for free

As I said in the first post, I did open up my PC and tried to clean as much dust as I could reach. Unless you mean removing some shit and cleaning inside it or something?
Those temperatures are quite bad indeed. Where did you exactly remove dust?
What I once did, when my old core2duo was around 50c idle, was, remove the power, open case, ground myself etc. I thought I had removed all the dust but I still had the problem. I looked at the part where the CPU fan is supposed to blow the air to, and it was completely covered in dust. I just took a vacuum cleaner (although MANY people do not recommend a vacuum cleaner as it can completely kill your cpu I've heard), removed the dust which 'blocked' the air and everything was ok then.
So you might have that with one of them (since hwmonitor shows your fan is rotating well, but it's still burning hot and I think that's what is happening to your cpu), or one of your fans are broken. You can still buy a new fan if you want to, but I still think the main problem is dust which you haven't seen.
OMG! nVidia cards are rated to go up to at most ~76C I'm surprised your graphics card is still alive. Don't play any more video games at all until you can get the idle temps below 65C at the most or you may risk losing your card all together.
Weird though, his computer should have crashed or at least crashed his game. My card used to hit 85C and it would just reboot lol.
I guess I'll have to try cleaning off the dust more thoroughly this time, I'll make sure to clean the heatsinks, and try to clean the insides of the fans more. I should buy one of those compressed air cans, would make this shit a lot easier.
If you tried cleaning it out already, it's not that little microscopic pack of dust that is going to solve your problem. 100ºC is a lot and you really should get quality aftermarket cooling with some MX-2 or Artic Silver 5, thermal paste.

I was getting around the same temperature when I checked it on a brand new 8600 GTS.
How would you explain that then?

Wow, well I take it back

I guess 100c is the max...
What is your CPU and GPU max load when you game (GPU loads can be checked with MSI AfterBurner)
holy crap, get a cooling solution
It seems like I'll have to get a new fan or whatever for my video card. Are there any specific ones I should look for? And do all fans fit all video cards?
Holy mother of allah, you got any cooling at all?
Okay, I guess I'll just go and ask what fan would be the best for my card in the store.

You could do that, but those guys will do anything to sell it to you.
Or you could ask them for advice and you should go home and read some reviews about it, to see if it is any good, if you don't want to buy from the internet.
I cranked my video card fan work to 90% using rivatuner and now the GPU idle temperature doesn't go over 75c, so I guess that'll work until I get a better fan.

Well, I bought a 80 mm fan that I attached to the inside of my case, but it doesn't seem to help that much so far. What do you mean by zip-tying it?

Something like this?

Also, after I changed my thermal paste, after I turn my PC off, I get a low GPU temp, but over time, it goes up and eventually reaches something similar to what it was at the beginning (like in HWMonitor pictures I posted). Did I do something wrong?
I have my gpu fan at 100% any time I intend on gaming (I have a 8800 gts 640).
If I don't, the temp will go above 80C, and that's not good.
at 90C you will get slowdown. at +100C your card is on coming dangerously close to burning out.

Tow.
We meant buy a new fan for your card. Not your case.

Yeah, I know, but getting a case fan is simplier. And cheaper. I thought I could try that before getting a new video card fan.
Also, my card only seems to give me slowdowns when it goes over 105c. So I guess the max temp on mine is higher.
Okay, I give you a temporary solution: Play older fun games which don't need so much capacity of your video card / Processor. Think about that popular RTS game, Stronghold Crusader, or the most beloved Mario! People, I'm not flaming or other kind of shit, you can box me, I don't care - but I think my theory is true... The new generation of gamers want graphics instead of story / gameplay... Speachless...
