It's not useless. Some programs can be faster.
The main advantage is accessing more than 4 GB of memory on non-PAE kernels, but it's not the only one.
I doubt he will get programs to run much faster. Only thing he will get more likely is more incompatibilities.

yea, with DOS programs.
Or with audio production software :argh:
I have a 32bit dual boot partition just so I can do my day-to-day audio stuff without issues.
Going to 64bit isn't without it's problems.

just make a vm instead. much easier.
you can run 32 bit vm's on 64 bit machines.

VMs are painfully slow though.
VMs are painfully slow though.
not on a modern machine. they run almost as fast as a normal machine.

You can run 32 bit software on 64 bit machines on most 64 bit OS. There is no need for a dual-boot or VM. The only thing which needs to be 64 bit are the drivers.

And most AV programs also require 64 then.

but he wants to run 16 bit, which you cant run on 64 bit. so therefore he should get a 32 bit vm.

Oh well, then yeah - a VM or just DOS-Box (emulator) might help.
But I seriously never read about anyone in here who wants to run 16 bit programs. You only answered with "incompatibilities concerning DOS-Programs" (which was more a fun-post).

But... but...
I Wanna play LBA2: Twinsen's Odyssey :(

Yes, because they use kernel drivers appropriate to your OS.

Does anybody actually buy Windows anymore?

Yes.
Does anybody actually buy Windows anymore?
Well I would buy Windows 7, but I don't have too since I'm a member of the MSDN-AA, so I get it for free :)

You can't.
No VM is fast enough nor has the required features (Firewire passthrough) to be able to work for professional audio.

yes dosbox works just as well.
