Looks like wireless driver support for my card on Linux is essentially dropped. Goodbye Linux, it was nice knowing you.

Which card?
So Lenovo installer unpacks the software in one folder. So basically it ends up with a bunch of drivers rewriting each other and in result the shit I need to install is missing.
So now almost everything works except for Wifi, which actually does work, but I can't turn it on because there is no driver for the Wifi toggle button.
I don't even.
I still wish desktop operating systems had a more standard method of exchanging information between applications.
The entire text and pipes thing that happens in the UNIX-world is nice, but it doesn't work with every single case.
I like the intent-based approach of Android, your application can register to receive certain intents. When the user for example wants to send a picture, you can just register that your app handles pictures, so your application shows up in the application-list that pops up for the user.
Not sure why that complaint popped up in my head, but whatever.

I have family in Wisconsin.
Snowmobiles are a viable solution.
How do you think Canadians are able to survive then?
Personally, I don't. The cold makes me depressed as fuck. Once I'm done with school, I'm hoping to move as far south as possible... I'm not sure about the US; Having no universal healthcare system scares me.
I just did some practice on an old broken flash drive with a slightly bigger connectors and I just can't do it. My hands are wayyy too shakey. I might just see if I can get a friend to help or whatever. The other problem is, if it ever breaks again, I won't be able to dissemble it without having to resolder it. But, now that I think about it, that probably won't ever happen.
At least you had a go at it, many just give up. Have a winner.
I just did a live sound job in the cold. I didn't take the full on computer-controlled rig because I really don't know how the computer (With SSD and HDD) would react to the cold and I need it to be 100% reliable. The temperature readouts would have been fun though.

It's not like you desperately have to update, do you?
[editline]2nd December 2012[/editline]
And I'm sure you'll have a new card soonish anyways so why would you drop linux over something so trivial

A true redneck would drive through the six feet of snow.
It's -17°C outside right now.
Fuck that.

Sounds fun.
It's 46 out and raining. I want snow back.
Weren't you complaining about it a few hours ago?

46°F and raining according to The Fucking Weather
i do wish it were warmer.

Sounds like the perfect time to OC a bit
Still, puts my -7 in perspective

Make that -10
It's managed to hit 60F here, even though last week it was sub-30.
Yup, This, That's not to difficult to fix. I've done those double row high density connectors on laptop motherboards for the LVDS connection to the LCD before. The key really is the flux and keep the tip clean. I think the tip I tend to use is a 1.2mm Chisel.
Not gonna lie, it takes some practice but even those flat flex connectors aren't too difficult if you have a steady hand. Magnification helps.
I think I'm missing something. Is flux solder?

Well at this time of year we only get like 1-2 inches at a time so it isn't that bad. Plus it's cold and I love the cold.
I think I'm missing something. Is flux solder?
Solder wire usually has a flux core
Strange, Ubuntu still supports my wireless card. Tried installing this?
Changing from wicd to NetworkManager fixed the problem. I just would have rathered use a terminal based client using Xmonad, but I'm just using Gnome. You can't get everything I suppose.
I hope I am not wrong here:
I am looking for a laptop/notebook for ≤500€
it should be ≤13" big
it should be able to survive 4 hours of web browsing with wlan
it should have a ≤500gb hard drive. or it should be easy to replace the hard drive
right now I am thinking of the x200 or x201. would that be good choices? just not sure if I really need the bigger performance and touchpad of the x201
-6C currently. Plowed snow twice today.
eh, is there a working THE FUCKING WEATHER rainmeter widget yet?
Solder wire usually has a flux core
Indeed it does, but if you are doing any sort of fine pitch work you will almost certainly need additional flux. Dave Jones of the EEVblog has a good video on SMD work and flux usage with good demonstration of the reflow, or tack and reflow soldering technique.
