So I'm trying to work on Project Horizon* again. But I seem to have a problem: The game just isn't fun to play. Yes, it's cool that there are thousands and thousands of parts, hundreds of enemies, and some literally impossible boss fights (I have yet to defeat Eo'golg the All-Seeing without cheating). But it's not actually fun. I've decided to literally redesign the battle system from scratch. I'm making the fantasy skin much more pronounced - partially so the game is still fun even if you don't catch any of the references, but mostly because it lets me vary the combat more. I think most of it nobody will really object to, but there is one thing that concerns me: How essential is it that I keep the characters-as-computer-builds metaphor strictly intact? I have some ideas that might make for more interesting gameplay, but would result in literally nonfunctional computers (ie. two 7970s and no processor). I'm feeling like the current "your character build has to be a usable computer" restriction results in severe limits on strategy, and I may try to solve that by dropping some of the restrictions (I'm currently undecided, and I could always add it back in as a "hardcore mode" option or something). I'm seriously asking you guys. You're a pretty accurate slice of my target audience for this thing. If doing that makes the game seem pointless to you, it might be worth finding a better solution. * For those who don't know, or don't remember, Project Horizon is the RPG I'm working on. It's a weird setting - on the face of it, it's fantasy, but pretty much everything is a metaphor, analogy, simile or allegory for computers. Weapons and equipment are based on hardware - processors, storage, memory, and so on. Factions are based on major companies in the computer industry. Characters are inspired by important computer people. I've been working on it off-and-on (but mostly off) for over a year now.
Anyone else got an addiction to super hexagon? http://distractionware.com/games/flash/hexagon/ Thats a free version if you haven't got it.
good music but FUCK IT'S SO HARD this would be so much fun with an arcade joystick or something
:words:
I wouldn't say make it so that you don't have to have a fully functioning computer, just ditch some aspects of reality, ie: PCI-E card with a processor from 1997 and 2 SAS drives.

You can run triple GF680s on a 286. Or quad-socket a Xeon, a POWER7, an Itanium and an UltraSPARC in a single rig. You can have a 5.25" floppy and a PCIe SSD. Or make a machine that uses only TS1140 tape for storage.
What is the issue, exactly, then?
I'm thinking of merging CPUs and GPUs into one "processor" category. Which, naturally, can result in systems that just flat-out won't work in real life. The reason I'm considering it is that all the builds end up playing the same. I've mapped CPU stuff to "physical" attacks, and GPU stuff to "magic", but requiring you to have both means you pretty much always end up with a character that's competent at both. So there ends up being little difference between the two systems - just take your best attack and keep spamming it. In other words, boring.
I told my dad I wanted a new case for xmas, so I don't have to use my broken xblade case. I came home today and theres a giant Newegg box sitting on the table. I have to wait three weeks to open it.

They're supposed to be used for different kinds of problems anyway, so why not make problems to match your tools, instead of your current system? (Think swarms of small enemies. Also, maybe some enemies could block parallel attacking?) Just an idea, tho
Hang on, had another thought. I think I can accomplish the same thing by juggling some attributes around, but it does have one reality-breaking change: VRAM ends up basically swappable like RAM. So you could stick, say, two sticks of 4GB GDDR5 in your old 8800, instead of your graphics card having whatever amount it actually would have. Imagine having slots for G-DIMMS or something on the card instead of it being hardwired in. Plausible, but not realistic.

My pi just shipped, ordered it two days ago. Buy one now if you want one. Apparently in Australia people are getting them the same or next day. That's just crazy. [editline]5th December 2012[/editline] Use Newark if you're in the US. Order total will be somewhere around $45 after tax/shipping.

Which I'm going to be at my grandparents house for. Without my computer.
also got this case, it's beautiful
Nevermind. He had me open the bigass newegg box and it turns out he bought another PS3 because it was cheap.
I can't stop playing super hexagon help. New high score of 39:23 and my eyes are bleeding.
So apparently John McAfee was arrested in Guatemala. [editline]5th December 2012[/editline] http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/06/belize-mcafee-arrest-idINDEE8B501X20121206

Anyone know someone who would do two digital paintings/sketches (or pixel art, whatever!) of my two cats for $20? [editline]5th December 2012[/editline]
gaypi
rainbows are awesome, screw you and there's nothing wrong with being gay ughhh
so what are you guys buying yourselves/getting bought for christmas? i'm probably either going to go all out and buy an i5 and new motherboard or just buy myself a pair of m audio q40's.
nothing my parents "banned" me from christmas
nothing my parents "banned" me from christmas
what
nothing my parents "banned" me from christmas
wat
i did bad
What exactly did you bad?
Probably pulled something similar to what I did. Came home completely shit faced, had drank a bottle of vodka to the face and puked everywhere. Parents hated me for that.
all I know is "bad" literally I'm just assuming it's because my dog has cost quite a bit over the past few weeks because he's got some nasty infection
I bought basically everything I wanted when I had a job this summer. Though the cooling in my Bitfenix Prodigy needs an overhaul. The 200mm Bitfenix fan doesn't move any air at all, plus it can only be mounted as exhaust. So, any ideas for a 200mm fan and a 140mm fan (For the back)? Nothing incredibly expensive, doesn't have to be insanely quiet since my graphics card is loud as fuck.
