Whenever this James dude on my friends list posts statuses about him getting a new mac there are tons of comments like this that just make me cringe. Some guy named Johnny said he was thinking about getting a new computer and wasn't sure about PC or Mac.

opening a web browser is totally an accurate performance benchmark
after I said you can get a computer with an i7 3770k and a gtx 680 for less than 2/3 of the price of the base model mac pro

well okay then.
point made
So I figured out why my DVD drives weren't working on Ganon.
I had both of the drives set to Master. I flipped them both over to Cable Select and they worked fine.
Man, I'm a dumbass sometimes.

This is why I love SATA.
That reminds me, gotta disable IDE on my motherboard and switch to ACPI when I reinstall Windows.
AHCI?
This is why I love SATA.
Eh, it only uses IDE for the optical bays, the cables are pre-routed and perfectly sized. I'm fine with it there.
Now, the cable management on Nayru could probably give you guys a seizure. Two IDE DVD drives, two IDE hard drives, and two floppy drives. Ribbon cables EVERYWHERE, in a poorly-layed-out uATX beige case.
Fortunately, an Athlon 900 doesn't produce much heat, so even terrible airflow is sufficient.
Network storage.
I'm jealous of Linus's 18TB RAID6 with five teamed gigabit.
I hate that thing. It's so retarded. All his PC's in his house boot off a small SSD and everything else is on that box. Have you ever heard of goddamn latency? And each PC would be 1-2 Gbit network so what the hell. It's fucking retarded.
I'd only ever want network-wide 18TB of storage if for whatever reason I'm using a ton of VM's at home.

I'd want one for no particular reason at all as long as i didn't have to pay for it
Dunno, Dedicated porn SFTP server. Always useful

What kind of latency are we talking. It can't be much more than normal HD, can it? Besides if it's done via iSCSI, doesn't windows see it as a normal drive and as such superfetches content and libraries before hand.

You're upping ~0.05ms latency to ~1ms. And Linus uses Windows Home Server + SMB, so no, it's not iSCSI. It's just fucking stupid.
Okay, this is problematic.
Something I did today is causing Ganon to BSOD or otherwise die hard. I'm taking bets as to which one it is:
1) Graphics card. It's been working fine for days now, running Crysis and such, but it could be one of those slowly-dying-on-arrival cards. I give 4:1 odds here, simply because it's the biggest hardware change. However, I've removed all the other recent changes and the system seems fairly stable again.
2) Hard drive. I slapped an old laptop drive into it so I could rip some files off. Unlikely, but it could be the cause. 5:1.
3) RAM. I went ahead and slapped my two new DIMMs in it, and immediately pulled them back out after it failed to boot. It died twice after removing it, so it's also a slim chance it somehow borked the whole box. 20:1
4) Optical drives. While one of the drives has been in there for years, the other was added weeks ago. BUT! Neither of them has been used in quite a while due to the M/M conflict. Once I got them both to show up on the IDE bus, problems began. If one of them is broken in a way that causes problems when you try to access it, that could be the cause. 5:1
5) Mouse. I did swap my old Microsoft Optical mouse for the tricked-out ROG that came with my laptop (since I'm using an Anywhere Mouse with it now). Normally I would completely discount this possibility until further examination ruled out everything else, but in this case there is a further oddity - several times, on boot, the mouse completely failed to work. It lit up, worked for a second or two, then shut off. Very odd for a wired mouse. 4:1
Gentlemen, place your bets.
6 cents on RAM.
I'll take GPU for 200 Gman
I'll put a new title on RAM. Any takers?
I'll put a new title on RAM. Any takers?
Ill hop on that train.
Literally never had a hardware problem that didn't turn out to be the RAM.

Again, I guess I don't see the big deal of an extra 1ms latency. It's loading video files and big storage files, not programs.
Besides that, my impressions of iSCSI are sort of correct right? It's like a low level connection protocol?
So that's Wings, MTMod and Loops going for the RAM - RAM which, I remind you, was not installed when either of the crashes occurred. Meanwhile, Breen is the only one guessing the Radeon. We'll see about that.
I thought of a fourth, very remote possibility - the USB port the mouse was plugged into. I used to have the mouse just plugged into the front ports, since I was stealing it from Nayru. When I put the new one in, I put it in the back, naturally. If the port was somehow defective (I seem to recall having problems with it before), that could also be the cause.
Not likely, though. I'll put it as another 20:1.
In any case, I have now plugged in the potentially-problematic mouse (to a front port this time, just in case). If the system crashes again, we'll be able to exclude several options.

No, he has all his programs on it. He explained everything in like 2 videos before. All the PC's have windows and user files on an SSD. Everything else is on the storage box. EVERYTHING.

And it's 1MS extra latency for EVERY signal. Remember that, it adds up a fuckload.

I think it could be your GPU playing silly buggers with the motherboard

You never posted any pictures of ganon
Let's see what's inside.

You said you touched the RAM. That is where my money is. Either that or the GFX card is not properly seated, although, that normally won't let you boot.

Ok, I take it bad. Linus is just as retarded as I usually said.

GMan, I'll put 35 caps on optical drives.

Silly Lavacano, caps are from Fallout, we don't use that here. We use bullets for currency. Get it right.
