You can get a top of the line 8 core (Not hyperthreaded like Intel. Real cores.) AMD CPU for < $200 anywhere. You are going to pay an arm and a leg for an even comparable Intel one.
Ahahaha "real cores" nigga trippin

Okay, you remember how I was having problems with Ganon BSODing, and I was taking bets on what it was? Well, I can't figure out what the cause was, because I've eliminated everything, including the problems. Graphics card is fine. Optical drives are fine (one of them won't open, but I think that's just the case being problematic). Mouse is fine. Hard drive is fine. Even the RAM is fine (although it is very disappointing to go into the system panel and see "Installed memory: 9.00GB (1.99GB usable)" - I really need to get x64 installed). So the process of elimination worked, in that it eliminated every potential cause, and then the problem. Maybe it was just a loose cable or something?

It's the case, gman.
could someone explain what a processor does? i'm thinking about getting an ivy bridge processor for gaming but how does it exactly work? will it improve game performance?
Ivy Bridge is a new more efficient architecture. So it's about 15% faster than SB in most things I think.
Ivy Bridge is a new more efficient architecture. So it's about 15% faster than SB in most things I think.
Thought it was closer to 5% for most things - only the integrated graphics got much of a performance boost. It's mainly that it does it at lower power - 77W instead of 95W for most of the i5 series, for instance. It's their whole tick-tock strategy. Every year, they have either a tick (new microarchitecture), or a tock (die shrink to a new process). Sandy Bridge was a new uarch, so it was a major improvement in performance. Ivy Bridge used pretty much the same uarch (although they did up the GPU from 12 units to 16), but now they build it using 22 nanometer transistors instead of 32nm. That makes it cheaper for Intel to produce (the primary cost factor is how big the dies are, and they went from 216mm^2 to 160mm^2), and it needs less current so it's more power-efficient. They do them separately so they can debug them separately. This way, if they encounter a problem with a new chip, they don't have to wonder if it's a manufacturing issue or a core design issue.
DD-WRT is the best router firmware I have ever tried so far. OpenWRT is a piece of shit that is literally impossible to use if you have a PPPoE connection (it does not have PPPoE capability out of the box, you are supposed to download and extra package through it's own package manager to get that. Too bad it does not support local installs). I had no experience with Tomato yet, I have never had a router that supported it.
I tired DD-WRT on my Netgear WNR3500 but the CPU isn't fast enough. With DD-WRT on my router I only get about 80MBit/s from my 120MBit/s connection. Overclocking the CPU helps a bit but I don't want to burn my router. Now I have tomato on it and everything is perfect. [t]http://www.abload.de/img/unbenannt-2cfp4k.png[/t] And tomatousb does support more routers.

Though that's anecdotal.
is there any sort of electric computer duster other than the datavac that you would recommend? $52 seems a little much for a christmas gift
My stepdad isn't dumb.
It is the default.
It is the default.
Especially after reading through a page or two in STGYM...
It's the case, gman.
yeah your computer hardwares cannot handle the raw powers of two apple logos, you should consider removing one
So my dad is giving me his 500w prodigy monitors for christmas, but we're not sure what kind of amp im going to need. Yeah, i know this isn't the headphone thread but that thread is pretty dead and I need to know this now.
Is there a place I can buy a windows 8 key from? The updater doesn't work for me and my pc doesn't have a cd tray
Just buy any boxed copy (if that's a viable option) and download the iso of the corresponding W8 edition and create a bootable flash drive using it.
Optical drives are fine (one of them won't open, but I think that's just the case being problematic).
alright we'll call it a draw
alright we'll call it a draw
I just fixed the second DVD drive, by the way. Just needed to take that little plastic bit off the front. So now I have two drives even though I barely even need one. But hey, I had a box full of optical drives I was throwing out. I stuffed every box I had with them.
Hm, I fear that something in my setup might be bottlenecking my pc, any subforum that this would fit in? (or maybe i should just post it here)
Why haven't I been using two-finger scrolling on my laptop before. This is bloody great.
