Neighbor? Pay them in hookers and cocaine.
That is definitely a possibility.
RM are still around too, both of my secondary schools had these pieces of crap. -image- P4, noisy fan and the speakers were absolutely pitiful.
We had a lot of these machines from RM: They were actually pretty well built machines, and the case is pretty cute. I hid one behind a server rack, set it to power on on failure, and installed team viewer. I could still access it for about a year after I left that job before they found it (or it broke).
I remember those, I think my first secondary school had a few kicking around in the library. They had Windows 2000 running on them if I remember rightly.
Well ours ran XP, and I did get 7 running on one, but XP was better. At the next school I worked at, they used this company http://www.nsoptimum.co.uk/ which are pretty awesome. Once when we were due to get a shipment of 60 new computers, they accidently booked the delivery van in for a service on the same day, so they sent 4 Vaxhaul Vectra (their sales car) loads of computers to us. Never see that dedication of service from RM.
Would it be possible (theoretically) to set up an array of four 1080p laptop panels to create a DIY 4K monitor?
I remember those, I think my first secondary school had a few kicking around in the library. The one i remember was in a room with about 20 hyperactive 5 - 7 year olds. Poor machine took a lot of abuse, but kept working quietly(ish) along
Would it be possible (theoretically) to set up an array of four 1080p laptop panels to create a DIY 4K monitor?
You'd need a graphics card capable of running 4 monitors in a combined (not extended) mode. I think only AMD cards can do that, as I'm pretty sure NVIDIA ones can only run 3 monitors in a combined mode.

My primary school had an old Archimedes RISC desktop and a Nimbus. And holy shit the RM desktops were crap. My teacher however had an RM laptop, then an HP.
the 6XX series can afaik.
6XX can run 4, but one has to be an "accessory" display, which means it cannot run as part of a monitor combo. AMD Eyefinity can run upto 6 as a combo. [editline]26th December 2012[/editline]
My school still has these, the techs disabled the speakers so people wouldn't play music out loud
Techies at mine and Amiga's school were idiots. And the speakers were so shit that no one dared play music with them.
Acorn Archimedes was the shit, I've been looking for an A4000 in good nick for the last few years. After a decade of abuse from school children none of them are in a decent state anymore which is a real shame.
I could've asked for the system, it was running all the time without any damage to the keys and it was working. The Nimbus was in great condition. But probably by now, the new RM systems might've been replaced every 6 months due to abuse. Wish they brought it back in that build quality yet the parts are from 2011. Christ, now that I see rain or a thunderstorm outside the window in the lighting in my room it makes me think of primary school again. Secondary schools systems were fucking gross... The screen had a dick drawn on it, keys broken, even the laptops were shitty Toshibas that wouldn't load Word or anything. In math, PC Pro had a review of the exact model I used which had poor hinges, shit battery life, poor performance and whatnot. I should be satisfied with the college laptop anyhow because there's a bit more students than computers there. If it loads everything fine then great. It would work a lot better if it was using an SSD though. Oh shit wall of text.

Kids used to smash in the front panels of our machines, reach in and steal the RAM.
The college iMacs have already been drawn on with pencil, there are marks all over the aluminium bezel and the keyboards are lovely shade of black with all the crap smeared into the rubber. No wonder I just use my Thinkpad instead.
I might become a laptop consultant in college. I just find students who need a laptop in particular at something affordable
The CaseLabs STH10 is just, wow, you can like sleep in it.

the laptops at my school run at 800x600 people look at my t61p and wonder why I can have so many windows open at once :v:
Why are you posting a long obsolete SSD?
Damn good price for an Intel SSD.
Damn good price for an Intel SSD.
Because it's old as hell.
Holy fuck, what kind of anarchy is going on over at your schools? We got some new Atom boxes, mITX sized. 19" 1366x768 screens, (Or 17", couldn't care) and some crappy copies of crappy dell keyboards. And really really crappy copies. Half the keyboards have a broken spacebar. Running Windows 7. Eh, they are held well. Occasionally a shutdown.bat shows up on the desktop but nobody really cares, because fuck using the desktop. And it is usually something shit too, like who the fuck would need to open the networks thing from the fucking desktop? Changed it that when you click it, a message pops up with "Stop that you bastard!" or something like that. oh yeah, the computer i mostly use has a nice V shaped crack right in the middle of the screen. I guess somebody wanted to play some games and didn't have a crosshair or some shit. Also quite a few screens have dead pixels. They sent like 7 back from the batch of 30 they got. And after that a few went too. Then they got tired.
The college machines run just fine, I can run any software that doesn't require admin permissions so with chrome, sublime text and Skype running I'm pretty much at home. I'd just rather not catch the plague off the disgusting mice & keyboards.
The college machines are pretty locked down, and if you try and visit a banned website (eg facebook, or an ad tries to load) it displays a systemwide modal error messagebox. On an odd machine which just doesn't seem to have pulled its policies down correctly, then you can run other programs, but usually not. Oh and on average they take 15 mins to log in. [editline]27th December 2012[/editline] Also why did I not know about sublime text? that thing looks awesome.
We had Acorn A3000s and BBC Micro Model Bs when I started school. Then the RMs (Complete with the classroom crippleware) had taken over when I had left. My first computer was a BBC Micro Model B with Casette desk and Dual floppy drive. I loved chuckie egg.

All of our new machines starting at the summer holiday just gone are Ivy I3, 4GB RAM, Win7, and 21.5 1080p screens. They havn't gotten damaged at all. [editline]27th December 2012[/editline] Also we are considering equipping all student workstations with SSD's when our next refresh comes.
We have Pentium 4s that have trouble loading Chrome. Firefox kills them on launch.
Is it bad that after 10.04 I don't even consider Ubuntu to be Linux. I just think of it as Ubuntu now, and then everything else is Linux.
Mint/Xubuntu has that Linux-ey feeling to it for me. Considering switching to Cinnarch, but I haven't had a single problem with Xubuntu yet.
I'm gonna be doing a build in a HAF-XB soon (two months most likely). I am excited, it's a pretty neat case. I blame my love for the HAF series on Brt.
