Well this might be fun. I've gotten a laptop - a Toshiba Satellite. Old as fuck - 3.5" floppy next to the DVD drive, 4:3 screen. It gets into BIOS, but doesn't boot - I think the hard drive's dead. The BIOS doesn't tell me much, but the option to disable the Processor Serial Number leads me to conclude that it's a Pentium III in there. The natural thing to do would be to fix it up and give it to one of my younger siblings. So, also naturally, the answer is to install Linux. Now, the question is, which one? I've actually not kept up with the various distros lately. Normally for a newb-friendly distro I'd use Ubuntu, but I doubt that will take well to such old hardware. For old hardware, my regular solution is "slap OpenBSD on it", but that's not user-friendly. My best option right now looks like Xubuntu, but I'm open to suggestions.
You could try Elementary OS, no idea if it'll run though.
You could try Elementary OS, no idea if it'll run though.
I wonder if I can dual boot my x131e with this.
All because they didn't cut the end of the pipe evenly. gj cyberpower
what a fucking colossal waste
At least it wasn't him doing something fucking stupid with it and it was actually the manufacturer's fault. I hate it when people try and screw around with their computers and then cry when they fuck up.
what is considered the best windows equivalent to the 11" macbook air? i would need something like that, price isn't too much of an issue, but it shouldnt cost more than a macbook air
An 11" Macbook Air with windows installed on it. How is this even a question?
An 11" Macbook Air with windows installed on it. How is this even a question?
Apart from the huge loss of battery life and crappy drivers of bootcamp, sounds like a great idea!
Apart from the huge loss of battery life and crappy drivers of bootcamp, sounds like a great idea!
I like to pull random false stats out of my ass too

Sounds like you've already made up your mind so why bother asking?

I own both 2011 and 2012 Macbook Airs and their battery lives all last longer than that even with unmodified Windows right out the box.
That's why you turn off non-essential services and don't install an insane amount of background apps if you want them to last as long as OS X.
I've got a friend who's MBA regularly hits 90 degrees because the fucking fan doesn't spin up fully under Windows.
That must be an issue with older models or a bad build. I have never heard of any issues like that with the newer models
Well using your logic, then if he got a UX31( which lasts longer with the services enabled), then he would be able to get and EVEN BETTER battery life than the MBA with services disabled.
Then why don't you get it if you've already made up your decision?

He asked for anything other than an MBA and you recommend him one. I don't see why it was even suggested in the first place.
My 2008 iMac had no fan control under windows, the fans just stayed at minimum.
Because there is no "alternative to" Apple devices. I'm sorry, but it's true and I'm not being a Macfag here. If you have the budget for the device, explicitly say "like a MBP/A but with Windows" just buy a fucking MBP/A and you've got the device.
or a nzxt havik 140. personally i think its better than the 212.
ok? its also 3 times the price
Pepper;39033213']My 2008 iMac had no fan control under windows, the fans just stayed at minimum.
That isn't right. You have an issue somewhere. [editline]30th December 2012[/editline]
ok? its also 3 times the price
And better. The 212+/EVO are (the best) budget CPU coolers.
My old C2D had an issue one night while I was gaming, where the BIOS decided to turn off all the system fans, it hit 120c+ within minutes.
I'm still a bit on the fence since I don't know if it's just that this CPU gets warm as fuck etc. But that sounds really good tho. [editline]30th December 2012[/editline] What CPU are you using?
i5 2500K @3.4Ghz
let me just ask does this guy who wants a Windows Macbook already have the Macbook? [editline]30th December 2012[/editline] if so then just slap windows on it cost: free
Oh my fucking god, any of you remember that post the other day of the "Nerd Cubed"'s new gaming rig (the retardely expensive cyberpower one with 3 680s), well he just uploaded a new video and one of the cooling pipes came loose when it was on and exploded. Oh god my ribs.
Surely that can be dried out and most of the parts didn't suffer any damage? The only stuff I'd imagine you'd have to replace is the PSU and maybe hard drives/optical drivers and cooler fans if it hit those. But yeah good reason to not buy prebuilt non-closed loop watercooling (at least from cyberpower)
But yeah good reason to not buy from cyberpower
FTFY
My friend has a PC from Cyberpower. Zero issues during the three years he's owned it.
open a guy's computer to repair it, three spiders come out I'm considering charging the guy more for psychological damages or something
3 days and look at how dirty that tubing/water is, did they use their spit or something?
they put anti corrosion and anti algae chemicals in the water, neither are clear
Pepper;39033609']Pansy
My uncle just pulled a gun on a spider on the wall. Spiders are serious business.
Posting this from this my new build! Already it's awesome.

Best he can do is dry it out, make it look nice, then RMA the shit out of it all.
they put anti corrosion and anti algae chemicals in the water, neither are clear
Yes, that has a tendency to change the color of the water, not the tubing itself. [editline]31st December 2012[/editline] The tubing is really discolored.
Hopefully the latest Crucial M4 firmware update will fix the problem where hard shutdowns will cause my laptop's SSD to forget that it's a hard drive until you "Wake it up" with a desktop PC.
