Mozilla 1.5?? Now I can surf the interweb at incredible speeds!
Okay, how much of a different do they make in real-life, then? Having never used any Bulldozer chips I wouldn't know either way, but surely there isn't that much of a difference.
oh come on. garry disabled transparency :(
Well i never had a amd cpu other than a Athlon 64 singe core.
Then i had a Intel Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 and now i have an i5 2500k.
The thing is and thats what i think is that AMD made new cpu architecture and maybe thats why it was so slow? But the piledriver like the APU A10 5800k is not that far behind the i5 2500k. So maybe it will be a bit better with the FX piledriver cpus?
Also i guess that when steamroller comes out they may have fixed theyre architecture and maybe we start seeing something new, this is ofc pretty optimistic.
So i decided to look at the specs of the iMac's my school has in one of the media arts labs and...

Kill everyone in the IT department
NOW
AMD APUs are fucking nice but for the real world performance I'll take a i5-2500k over the AMD equivalent and the extra dosh.
With the amount of photoshop and other CPU strenuous tasks I do, the i5 I have is much more valuable than any AMD equivalent and overclocks easy to boot.

actually, the guys at OIT are super nice. there was probably some limitation they met when installing all the software or whatever. they have a fuckton of security stuff on the network.

kinda thinking of asking if they're doing a summer internship.
I don't get why people think that. sure they're poor for gaming but they'll wipe the floor with intel for most practical applications
More like their new CPU suck for pretty much anything performance related except for HTPC related applications.

32 bit operating system.
8 gigs of ram.
Running windows on a Mac.
You know what must be done. Get to work.
you guys have a really bad superiority complex or something
you guys have a really bad superiority complex or something
If pointing out that buying a mac with 8 gigs of ram for running 32 bit windows is retarded makes me an elitist, then I gladly embrace it, because it is retarded and I see no reason to sugar coat it.
I was more talking about the AMD thing
WHAT THE FUCK.
Bluescreen and now my font rendering is cancerous again. Fuck windows 8.
Got a new ISP

When i pass 2 Mb/s on a download my modem goes " no dad no" and restarts itself. I think that happens because its docsis 1.0, I really don't know.
If anyone is good with networking I would love you <3.

pretty much yeah. whatever they've got they shit over the competition at all times
and then when they switch to the competition they start shitting all over the other brand
can't we all just agree to hate VIA

I had no clue those speeds were even possible with Qwest/CenturyLink.

Ultimately, a phenom II is adequate for 90% of office related things. The thing is, that it's cutting it slim on some tasks because herp derp eyecandy.
For a little bit more you can get an i3, which consumes less power, face fucks anything AMD has to offer that isn't their most recent lines in anything that isn't stupidly multithreaded (zip compression), and will probably last someone at least 5 years in terms of performance. It's literally a case of, spend 450 dollars instead of 350, and get far more prospective life out of your hardware.
I don't honestly know that I'd call that elitism. If AMD comes out with something that smashes Intel, we'll be all over it in a heartbeat. General consensus here is that the trinity APUs do have a viable niche, albeit a small one.
you're not factoring in things like how often Intel changes mobo sockets. you can upgrade an AMD system 2-3 times for the price of one Intel system or 4-6 times for the price of 2 intel upgrades and you end up with double or nearly double the life

We already had a pissing contest about this in PC building. Go back a few pages and look for AMD CPUS.
AMD has actually not been any better than Intel in regards to their sockets as of late. The FM2 sockets are supposed to stick around for a while, but as it currently stands, LGA 1155 has been around for a while, and has sunk in. You'll be able to continue getting 1155 processors for at least 2 years. In addition, disregarding the FM2, most of AMDs sockets are borderline end of life as it stands, so that's not even relevant either. The fact of the matter is that with an i3, your average home user won't need to upgrade at all for 5-6 years. Outside of the trinity chips, everything is less powerful than the i3s for office/web work, so you could quite conceivably argue that the socket isn't even relevant because a projected life of the chip will surpass even AMDs socket prospects.
Meanwhile, intel has stated that their 2011 sockets will continue to see service on the server side of things through 2014 haswell xeons. source. I realize that server grade hardware isn't necessarily relevant to this discussion, but AMD hasn't done better in that field either.

real question is why did they buy macs to run windows
More like their new CPU suck for pretty much anything performance related except for HTPC related applications.
And even there the i3 competes heavily with it.

Everyone knows that any one who uses Macs for media and art related tasks automatically makes them ~professional~

Via Pico is better than Atom. But that's just about all they have going for them.

Schools get a massive discount on anything Apple. It's actually price-competitive at that point.

Actually, 1155 is going when Haswell comes out. And 2011 isn't exclusive to servers.
Via Pico is better than Atom. But that's just about all they have going for them.
yeah but a breadboard with a few logic chips a dip switch module and a handful of resistors will make a better cpu than an atom
Via Pico is better than Atom. But that's just about all they have going for them.
They're also dirt-cheap. A good choice for very low-power stuff - we have some Nano boards at work from a print server project.

I'm surprised no one really uses them. But I'd guess that the reason would be Via's bad rep.
Yes, I know 1155 is going, but the socket has been around long enough that it has effectively saturated the market. Ivy bridge chips will be available for a relatively long time. I guess I didn't make that clear.
2011 isn't exclusive to servers, but it's definitely exclusive to higher end equipment. Currently there is no point in even comparing the 3930k, because AMD quite literally does not have a single thing that can even touch the kneecaps of that processor, let alone look it in the eyes. The only comparisons you can make are the i3s, and lower end i5/7s because while the top end chips are more expensive, there simply isn't anything to compare them to.

I'm not even connected to that area and even I've heard of Vias terrible reputation.
