VIA focuses on the low-power, low-cost market. They don't have anything that can compete with an i3, let alone an i7. In benchmarks, they're about equal to the netbook-grade Atoms.
But they're cheap. You can get a CPU+mobo for about $100. It's good for low-power shit - their high-end kit has a 25W TDP, with a 500mW idle draw. If I ever revisit my "dedicated emulator machine" idea, I'll probably use a Nano board.
years ago I wanted to build a beowulf cluster but never did due to cost issues. If I ever pick that idea back up I'll probably go VIA

Which is a stupidly niche market when you consider the number of discarded laptops with functioning core2 duos and i3s in them you can get for 40-50 dollars.

You're comparing a core2 and i3 system with a 35+w TDP to something that uses about watt for a full system. You can pick up Nano boards for about $125. Tell me, where's the comparison between Core2 and i3?
They're a different market.

I'd want a Beowulf cluster if I had any idea what I'd use it for
i think too practically to justify things as "because I can" most of the time, it upsets me

who cares what you'd use it for, that's not the fun part
I have a 2-year contract with my current ISP.
I got a letter yesterday, one of the largest ISPs in Finland (Sonera) made a deal with the company that's managing this apartment house.
They're offering me 100/10 through fiber, and I have 24/1 right now through ADSL2.
I'm going to check how much it would cost me to get out of my current contract, if it's too expensive I'll just have 2 bloody Internet connections at the same time.

Two internet connections can be handy.
Thats me in the Planet Side 2 beta. Downloading now.

25 watts (admittedly high end kit) vs a system that can cap at around 30-35 watts. The power savings are frequently not going to pay for themselves in a few years compared to just modifying and repurposing a laptop.
You need to get into 30-40 watts difference and 30 dollar range before it pays for itself in 18 months, at least in my area, and that's running nearly continuously.

an 800 MHz nano is plenty for the sort of applications these low-power computers would be doing and only draws 3.5 watts

Yes, lets run a 50 watt average power usage, 15" laptop full time for a print server instead of a Pico-ITX Nano system that uses a grand total of 2 watts...
Good lord you're spouting shit right now.
1155 is not going to be used for haswell, they gonna use 1150.

Dual boot.
real question is why did they buy macs to run windows
I wouldn't be surprised if the reason is a mix of standardization, educational discount and warranty.
Then again, they could have just leased out computers for like 3-5 years, that's how most schools in Finland do, as far as I know, my last school did it (vocational college) and my current one does it (university of applied sciences).
More like their new CPU suck for pretty much anything performance related except for HTPC related applications.
This is very relevant: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/fx-4170-core-i3-3220-benchmarks,review-32544.html
I don't know why you guys are still on the AMD sucks bandwagon, and while power draw is completely fucked, AMD is actually performance competetive - you can see here that they win in applications performance, but loses in games. If it weren't for the discrete GPU in this comparison, AMD would have won by far. So for low-end builds (and especially those without discrete GPUs), at least this CPU has become a viable choice.

It averages price and performance to the i3, but the problem is it uses more heat and a LOT more power.
The i3 is still a better chip.

My point is that often heat and power consumption isn't the primary concern in a cheap computer - the AMD chip does perform 8% faster in applications, but only 3.5% slower in games. If you count in the integrated graphics (as you probably would in a very low-end build or HTPC), the AMD chip is a much better choice overall. That's as simple as it gets, really. It's hard to find decent <350W PSUs on the market anyway, so you'll have to couple your CPU with a big GPU in order to consume that much power, even with the AMD chip - and when would you ever couple a low-end CPU with a high-end GPU? The i3 definitely is a much better designed chip, but it isn't necessarily the primary focus in this price segment. In many cases the AMD chip would be favourable.

Yeah! Customization sucks! My opinion is better then yours and I say that there should be no customization!

yes. remove the ability to move Icons in the home screen, and the ability to change the lockscreen wallpaper.
because fuck customisation.
[editline]19th October 2012[/editline]
And don't forget to remove the ability to "add contacts", because thats customisation aswell.

You get 3 contacts!
Your Phone provider, Apple support, and a line that directs you to the closest Apple store near you.
Speaking of iOS, I updated to 5.1.1 and jailbroke again... just so I could play Carmageddon.
So I discovered something interesting today.
In Linux, if you cat someones terminal back into their terminal it will stealthily make their terminal completely unusable. But in the slyest way.

Just watch.
