I far prefer DVD since I have a single copy of the material I want and I can archive it.
I just keep a huge volume of ISOs on a drive, and flash a stick on an as needed basis. Takes 20 seconds to start, and only a few minutes to finish copying with a lousy flash drive, during which I can build a machine, or do something else. Still far faster than keeping a stack of dvds around for me.

I can just grab a DVD and do whatever I want to it. It's much more permanent than a flash drive, and I'm honestly flabbergasted that you don't see why people still use physical media.
When i installed windows 7 on my ssd i just extracted the iso on the ssd and then installed it. Went really fast.
Real men memorize the binary code and type them back into the computer to install it.
No it doesn't because Windows 8 is much faster in general.
Doubt that'd make a huge difference.
at least try metro before being a luddite for the sake of being a luddite
I have nothing against Metro. It's pretty cool, I just don't want it on my desktop for reasons.

Windows 8 boots in literally half the time that Windows 7 took on my laptop.
Windows 8 boots in literally half the time that Windows 7 took on my laptop.
My boot times are so slow even on a clean system that I really honestly stopped giving a damn at a certain point.
[editline]20th October 2012[/editline]
Maybe I'll get an SSD at some point and start caring again but until that boot time is not really a priority. When I start up my computer, I won't move for the next six hours. Twenty seconds of waiting isn't that bad.
We use discs all the time at work. Infact I burned like 10 DVD's today for distributing some acronis software for backing up some personal test servers people were setting up.
When I build my eventual server, I would love to load a bunch of OS ISO's on it and do network boots.
Or rather, twenty more seconds.

:ninja:
An old Dell latiude 531 which has amd athlon x2 64 and 4gigs of ram and a 5600rpm hdd and integrated graphics. boots with windows 8 really fast. The only thing that ran good on that laptop was win xp, win vista was on that one and windows 7. So windows 8 can be a boost or something like that to an old system.

Because I can copy to a flash drive, and do a full install of w/e version of windows vista/7/8 faster than you can with a pre made dvd. (CD installs for stuff like ubuntu are somewhat debatable)
Because I have 7 8GB flash drives that I've acquired from various fairs, displays, and other crap that I've been to, so unless I need something really weird I don't actually have to make a new install flashdrive anyways since I have several just lying around.
Because I can easily keep a catalog of up to date installers for all sorts of tools and drivers on the same drive.
Because when I still was installing XP machines I could slip in necessary drivers and tools to allow an 8 year old operating system to recognize modern hardware correctly without wasting several discs on what frequently amounted to trial and error.
There are uses for optical media. I've seen a few systems that refuse to boot of of USB, but it's significantly slower. I keep an assortment of PS2 keyboards on hand for finicky systems too.

Network boots on a good LAN are a godsend when dealing with dozens of machines.

You're wrong. Windows 7 boots in 30-40 seconds for me with my Samsung 830 256GB. Windows 8 boots in 10-15.
The whole os feels faster, ignoring Windows 8 because of the metro start menu is dumb as hell. There is literally NO reason not to get Windows 8.

I still don't understand what people are doing to make it take 40 seconds to boot 7 off of an SSD. I do that on 7200 rpm drives. SSDs should be 15 seconds including post.
Pretty sure the Windows 7 animation alone takes about 8-10 seconds and it has to play.
Most high-end boards take about 8 seconds to POST as well.
Also, can't wait to install these this weekend in RAID 0. The third one is for my guest PC, crucial is going into my HTPC.

What? I have a Win7 install on an i5 laptop with an m4 and it boots so fast that I'm logged in before the animation can even form the Windows logo.

The animation will clip off partway through if the system loads sufficiently fast enough. You could also disable it if you really wanted to skip that entirely.
Even if your board takes 8 seconds to post, that's only a few more than the ones I've used recently (most of the recent asrock boards seem to take about 5), and I have built numerous machines that will fully power on and be sitting idle at the desktop in 13-16 seconds from the moment you press the power button. So you should be looking at 20 seconds for a full boot on 7 under somewhat non ideal circumstances. This is non RAID systems by the way.
Obviously for these values there is no power on password, and the OS logs the user in automatically.
I'm genuinely curious. What are you running that is causing things to take that long to load? The only thing that I can think of is a migration from a conventional drive that is somehow misconfigured or something along those lines.

Someone should ask him when he's actually going to give a legitimate answer to a question.
Someone should ask him when he's actually going to give a legitimate answer to a question.
Wouldn't that require a legitimate answer in the first place?
Wouldn't that require a legitimate answer in the first place?
See if he responded like that then he'd be dodging the question.
Look how fucking clear his new video is because he's not blending.

So I've learned that Otterboxes are fucking amazing at protecting my phone. Gotten pissed off while reading a text twice today and chucked it once at a solid wood wall and once at concrete at work. Not even a scratch.

maybe you should stop being so angry at your phone. I've gone years without ever having a cell phone case and never broken a single phone

of course the new iphones are pretty slick I'd probably drop one of those all over the place if I owned one and didn't use a case
