First review of the GTX580 - $500, quieter than a GTX280

Kudos to Nvidia, get the ball rolling for this DX11 shit.
On a side note though, consecutive DX11 games couldn't come out any sooner. I'm not gonna buy cards, especially $500 worthy, for an API that really hasn't been used in too many new titles. JUST GIVE US A RANGE OF DX11 TITLES ALREADY. It's been over a year since we've heard of DX11, it's just teasing, to me at least.
sorry for rant
Just in time for my new computer :buddy:
Thread derailed and the site is down
I have two, actually. And if I can bullshit my warranty I can get my $500 (Bought them at launch) back and lose nothing on buying these.
Even if I did end up having to sell them on craigslist or something and ended up paying the ~$200 difference, that's fine with me. I'm not strapped for cash.
The 6900 series is targeted for mid-range performance.
Was the "Problem, ATI?" not a big enough hint of sarcasm for you?
no 6900 is high end
I wonder when the other 500 cards are coming.
no 6900 is high end
Oh, I guess I have the naming schemes confused then. I thought ATI was putting the mid-ranges out first?

the did, it's the 68xx
yeah that's because you don't use workspace GPUs for real-time rendering
Eh, I just use what my work provides.

The length of this card is nothing. The 6970 is longer.
What the fuck am I looking at?
What the fuck am I looking at?
Old school video.
Wild guess here, ATI fanboy?
I own two of these, genius.

Sorry but the gain gotten for a ramping up that requires a vapor chamber isn't worth the price per horsepower shown in reviews.
considering the 580 is a single GPU and seems to outperform the 5970, which is dual-GPU, in most things is impressive within itself.
I've highlighted the SLIGHT discrepancy in your argument. One of your numbers is a digit too low.
also is crossfire scaling actually as close as it is with fermi? and is it across the board? any benchmarks?
legitimate questions, not patronizing or anything silly like that
XF scaling (AMD drivers being what they are) is now in the 60-90% range for most mature titles run against 6X, that's rather comparable, and we haven't even seen the stock high end yet, much less something like a toxic.
And I'm still using a 9600GT :saddowns:
I'm still using an intergrated :saddowns:
So, who's winning the gpu wars so far? Nvidia or ATI?
This gen went to ATI, no contest; they shipped three times as many consumer cards as nVidia's entire production line, including HPC SKUs.
Next gen is up for grabs.

Quantity =/= Quality :eng101:

You just sound like a massive ATI troll.
For a start, how can nVidia even ship anything that is not even released yet?
1. Talking about current gen, which is 4X vs 5X, since neither company has produced a new full line that is readily available to consumers on demand right now, reviewed card is next gen, same for family which isn't available yet, period.
2. Pursuant to 1: It's fact; you liking or disliking it is immaterial to its occurrence.

Not as far as retailers and AIBs are concerned.
Not as far as retailers and AIBs are concerned.
Are we retailers or AIBs?
Wild guess here, Nvidia fanboy?
Wild guess here, AMD fanboy?
If you get butthurt at jokes, you are the fanboy. Being a fanboy is hating one company and loving the other, I take shits on both companies if there's the opportunity, does that make me a uhh... Intel Integrated fanboy?
Also as an owner of a GTX480, the only thing I can say is: :saddowns:
Are we retailers or AIBs?
You don't get a card though any other means, so if you think it doesn't matter, I'm sure you'll be happy purchasing a Matrox card, right?
I'm still using a 9600m GT :smug:
Well, I'll take a wild guess and say that is your MBP you're talking about.
Holy shit wtf GTX 580.
I'm 300 slower D:
(it's a joke...)

But honestly, stop running away from me with all them cards.
But honestly, stop running away from me with all them cards.
Do as I'm going to with my GTX275. Accept it and enjoy it till you can't play games on med/low anymore.
I've highlighted the SLIGHT discrepancy in your argument. One of your numbers is a digit too low.
and which number would that be?
[img_thumb]http://gyazo.com/a0989fa657664f2bea2b4158a4e89347.png[/img_thumb]
in this example, as with just about all of the benchmarks in this thread, you see 580 and 5970. i'm confused as to what the hell you're going on about, to be honest. i mean i am legitimately perplexed.
is the GTX580 not what is outperforming the HD 5970?

Yep. I think I have the whole range of cards pretty much covered.
Modern GTX 460 in my hi-power machine
fairly outdated 9600m GT in my MBP
Cutting line top of the edge ATI Rage IIc(or Pro) in my OLD iMac.
And I bought a Gtx 260 recently.
It maxes out most games I have, including Crysis so I don't need to feel outdated yet. :v:

The 260's have done any game Ive ever tried on full.
Though.... I got 3 of them.

SLi Is win.
Only game I haven't been able to do on "Full" yet is GTA4, For some reason it lacks SLi support and thinks I only got 1 card, and only runs 1 card.
Hell, for a while the SLi went off for some reason, and I didn't even notice any difference in lag, Its a pretty awesome card.
I'll probably stick with these for a while, until there's a card('s) that Is better while still being in a realistic price.
The price looks to be pretty great.

(Can't wait to see a quad-SLI build with those)
And the power bill + size of psu needed to power it..
Two 6870s are a much better choice, cheaper AND better.
I'm still surviving on an ATI Radeon 2400 Pro, I can never bring myself to buy a new one because I always think "If I just wait a bit longer, the price will go down and I'll be able to get something better with my money"
ah! me too but im a 2600 pro
