I was thinking about getting a HP 200LX.
It's like a portable IBM 5150, from what I can gather.
I've been on the look out for one of those, they run a fully fledged MS-DOS 5.0, able to run basically any ms-dos software. Finding one at a good price is a pain in the ass though, all I've found are ebay listings at £50+. You can also upgrade them, doubling computation speed, extending RAM, adding backlight, etc.

The 1000cx is the same thing but without the built-in software and arguably better colour scheme.

I remember Disney using a Cray to render Toy Story.
You guys know about old stuff, right? I've been looking for the software, drivers and cable for this camera for like, a week now, and can't find it.
[t]http://www.solorb.com/gsale/polaroid320.jpg[/t]
Polaroid Digital 320 driver, Photomax software, and serial to 3.5 three-contact TRS plug cable. I've tried one pinout (it involved connecting a bunch of pins together, I'll get a link later), and I can't tell if it works because I don't have the driver and I don't know if it's plug and play.

You maybe able to get rid of your driver issue if you use Linux. It seems to have a thing for stuff just working out of the box. If you don't have a distro you can burn one and use it from there without installing anything. (Bit slow though)

...even though it's a serial port camera from back when linux for normal users wasn't really that much of a thing?
I remember Disney using a Cray to render Toy Story.
Pixar used a cluster of 80 SPARCstations to render Toy Story. I don't believe anyone has ever been able to afford rendering an entire movie on a cray because the energy cost per clock cycle was so high.

Someone sent me a PM the other day.
Hey MIPS. What do you do with all those computers? Do you even have anything old enough to tun on them? Do you just collect them and never use them? I see a lot of pictures where systems are crammed floor to ceiling in storage.
Well For the larger systems there is a problem where for the unemployed it is very expensive to operate them continously, even if you were doing something to offset the cost like say, mining for bitcoins using supercomputers. The other problem is that most large systems do not enjoy being power cycled often. The inrush current can cause power supplies to fail or components to burn out.
For the smaller systems the problem is finding space to set them up. You start getting to that point where you are like an Apple fanboy who has folding tables everywhere with two or three computers tops running on them.
The key is to keep the large systems setup in a semi-permenent location and only operate them in 24 hour cycles whenever you have enough work to justify the power and the smaller stuff grouped together in storage so you can pull different systems out and use them for a month or so before putting it back in storage and taking another out.
As for using them, that goes along with software and documentation. For all but perhaps two or three systems I have all the necessary documentation or software that you need, which also takes up large amounts of space.

I have thousands of floppies, hundreds of CD's and hundreds of assorted books. The key to storing this much is to keep it properly organized. All of my software and documentation fits on four and a half GORM shelving units. If you are having to dig through boxes to find various items you have a problem.
Had my eyes on what appeared to be the box of an Amiga 500 under some anti-static mats in my colleges hardware room for a while. I finally got to take a look last Thursday and saw that it did indeed contain one and it's looking in pretty good shape from what I can see of it under the packaging. (Which appears to be in really good condition)
Don't know if it's used for anything but if it isn't I hope if I'm lucky I can get to take it home. Don't know if it has the Kickstart floppies or mouse but if I get it for free I won't moan.
what would be a good price for an AMSTRAD 256k?
I I took the liberty to build an HP-85 into my workbench.

It has an HP-IB and serial interface so it can control and collect data from GPIB equipped test gear and plot data out.
Seems like you make good use of these systems, mind giving us a run down of what you use each one for?

Im glad it still works.
I Give up. I'm done.
I'm being pushed out of seeing vintage computers as a genuine hobby by people twice my age (or my age but with way too much money and no idea how to computer besides Steve Jobs invented OS/2 on the Osborne Executive) who insist there's no problem in systems being bought for $700 and flopped on ebay for $9000 and still consider it a "bargain". There's no fun in it. You want to see or own a cool computer because of "history" or "nostalgia" and everybody is capitalizing on that now. I can't afford to keep doing this and continously get told what I just put $100 in effort into is nothing compared to some other computer which only the seven wealthiest people can afford.
It's almost like....ham radio. Sure you can get your license and pay a few hundred for a basic radio but you're going to get massively shit on by old asshats who have shelves of parts you would love to use because he isn't, but can't because while he got it free at a yard sale, he won't let go of his prized but unused RTTY converter for $600.
dangit MIPS where did you get those big boxes of Myst, Riven, Exile and Uru? Uru especially, I only remember that game coming out in a jewel case in the dark corner of GameStop

Do what I do, volunteer at a computing museum in your free time. Sure it isn't yours, but if you're lucky they'll let you work on the stuff you want to use. Like the other day the museum booted up an Acorn Phoebe with all original manufactured internals. You won't get to actually own anything but your hobby gets to play out at no costs and you help a museum/charity out (which always look good).
If memory serves, I was fired from my connection and indirectly kicked out of Vancouver for three years because boss didn't like me asking questions while he wasn't there, plus he was getting pissed his ebay price recommendations were not pushing product while my rock bottom sales were.
Point is, at these prices I can't buy to try. At $3000 for a system I'm committed to using it for something and more than not, I do not have that use.
Also, fuck you ImageDisk.
How much space does AIX 1.3 for PS/2 (the one that runs on 80386+) require? I want to tinker with it but I'm having no luck getting it to install in VirtuaBox so I might skip right to installing it on an IBM PS/2 with a 100Mb hard drive. Will I be able to fit the OS plus X and a desktop environment on this thing?
[editline]17th June 2013[/editline]
Funny, Googling the error code I was getting in VirtualBox lead me to one of your posts on nekochan pentium. :v:
I was futzing with 1.3 on a 120mb drive in a 55sx and it was really, really tight.
Choose your packages wisely because they will not all fit. If you can get a SCSI controller you can mount directories on separate volumes like any other *nix.
Holy crap this is a tiny laser printer.

At first glance I thought it was a desktop!
so I found someone selling a Compaq Portable II, Sun 386i, and a Dell tower (?) for $50. Only problem is he lives ~1.5 hours away and apparently knows nothing about computers so he has no idea if they're working or not.
The 386i is Sun's very brief entry into the x86 market. You ran SunOS 4 on it but you could also install an emulator which made it run MS-DOS as well which can be handy for using the ISA slots.

I hate myself for being born in 1998, even if I'm 14
I love the charms of classic computers. Only reasonably
old computer I have here is a IBM PC 300GL which was designed for
Windows 98 if I'm correct.

You got a place I can dump the GPS app for that? It just needs a serial port.
