You got a place I can dump the GPS app for that? It just needs a serial port.
How do you mean? I don't have a compatible GPS device for it. I also don't have a serial connector for it, yet.

I have this little app for the LX that is programmed for the wide screen. Feed it templated PCX maps and NMEA data over a serial port and it turns into a GPS.
Was talking to the guys at the university IT desk about a terminal I saw in a classroom today.
If I can persuade and prove that I'm serious about it, I might be able to get their DECwriter III hard copy terminal and say goodbye to my broken ASR43 teletype.

From what I could see this one had a gummed carriage and the power supply needed work.

Sounds like an interesting project, I'd be willing to try it out. Just need to fashion a connector for the 200LX's serial port.
Got an Atari Portfolio?
I swear I've replied to this, but oh well.
No Atari Portfolio here, the only palmtops I have are (from left to right): 620LX, 200LX, and the Psion 5.
I also have an iPaq which I managed to brick on day one.

Got back to the guys at the IT desk. They said they can't write the terminal off. They first needed to push it to Accounting to find the value first.
The only possible way THEY could of somehow found one for sale at $700 is if they were googling those nasty surplus websites that half the time don't even photograph their shit. Now they're all acting iffy about handing it over instead of sending it off for recycling.
I'm optimistic anything good will happen. :(
So a few months ago some dude came into the museum with an Acorn Phoebe. Now we have Phoebe cases, they're not too hard to come by and when the guy donated it he was just all "Yeah here's a phoebe". We asked if there was a PC inside or a raspberry pi or something and he was just like, no it's a phoebe. Confused we opened it up and turned it on. Its a production Phoebe complete with hard drive intact and everything. It has all the developer tools and tons of unreleased stuff on the hard drive from Acorns Internals.
As far as we know this is one of the only actual production complete Phoebes out there, running a stock acorn RISC OS 4 with stock internals too. We lent it to ROUGOL for a bit for them to clone the hard drive and piss about with it see what cool stuff they found out.

It batch processes only.
It has no GUI.
It has no actual user controllable command system.
It's blue.
It supports all System/3 software.
It can be yours for $200.

Hmmm, I'll keep my 5170 thanks.
Just curious, what is the ZX spectrum closest to the original that you can get a scart cable for?

I'm fairly sure you can bypass the RF modulator on all of them, my dad has done it with his Spectrum 48k

As far as I know they can all at least be modded to do composite out.

I find composite awful, It's worse than analogue in my opinion.

I couldn't disagree more when it comes to things like the spectrum. It looks and works a charm and way better than rf

But the thing is composite brings it own range of artefacts and shit to the table, it is simply no match for a RGB scart cable.

wow ye sorry im dumb, didn't actual read the post clearly enough! No yeah scart looks a lot better, but i think for something like the spectrum the difference is negligible. I've never had a problem or really noticed much wrong with a composite mod for a spectrum and I highly recommend it because the standard RF looks like complete crap. It won't get better than composite.

You never know, I played NES VC games on my wii for a few years through composite and when I got scart they looked so much more vibrant than before. Same goes for my Mega Drive as well.
dunno if this is retrocomputing per se, but i spotted a beautiful blue IBM Selectric at Goodwill yesterday. Couldn't get it, though... I don't really have any use for a typewriter, and I wouldn't be able to easily accomodate it in the dorm i'll be occupying next month.
The thing weighed a ton -- i think it might have been heavier than my old Seequa Chameleon that i recently parted ways with!
Selectrics are nice when some asshole doesn't steal the font ball. I used one for a while until the clutch gave out.
bought an atari 520st the other day, it's really cool
i still don't know how to transfer applications to these devices properly

Get a machine that runs MS-DOS, there are programs that can write to the Atari's disk format.
Unfortunately DOSbox won't cut it, it needs to be a real machine with a proper floppy drive.
I do actually have a 95 machine, totally forgot about it
I do actually have a 95 machine, totally forgot about it
That would do the trick, I have an IBM Thinkcenter that dualboots DOS7 and Mint Linux, I download the software in Loonix and reboot into DOS to write it to disk.
Discovered my two Compaq Pentium II machines still post, I never expected that.
Man I want one of those mini dos machines
They look so fun to screw about with
AppleFile was upgraded to 40mb with a Seagate ST-251N.
Discovered my two Compaq Pentium II machines still post, I never expected that.
Why would you not expect that? Computers build in that era are like tanks.
So after some haggling I got that DECwriter onto a government auction site. I fought some other guy who was obviously a reseller judging by his other recent purchases and won out at $70.

As I had seen previously the unit did not work. I couldn't get the print head to move and the display was giving me nonsensical output.
[t]http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a166/ballsandy/Computer%20related/hauls/CGS_0100.jpg[/t]
I proceeded to pull the system apart and dust it out.

[t]http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a166/ballsandy/Computer%20related/hauls/CGS_0102.jpg[/t]
I also sprayed WD40 on the guides and bearings and that freed up the sticking components.

This unit was built on August 5 1980 and completed burn-in testing two days later.
[t]http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a166/ballsandy/Computer%20related/hauls/CGS_0105.jpg[/t]
The last issue I still had to tackle was my power issues. Linear power supplies scare me. For now I dusted it out and I put it back int he system.
[t]http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a166/ballsandy/Computer%20related/hauls/CGS_0107.jpg[/t]
Oddly it seemed that dusting it out caused my problem to change. Suddenly I had the character counter back and the indicators were all lit.
[t]http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a166/ballsandy/Computer%20related/hauls/CGS_0108.jpg[/t]
With a bit more poking I found that pressing the lid switch down while the paper sensor was tripped would cause the print head to home and the terminal to come up! Hurrah!

Okay, so the ribbon is a bit dry but now it's fully functioning. Now I just need to finish my paper tape reader hack and I'll be cooking with gas. Anyone want one of my old CRT terminals? I no longer need one.

Is that an EMU sampler in the back? Could I have that instead?
EDIT:
I'm almost certain it's an EMU Emax of some model!
