Thanks, that answers that question.
what part does RAM play in overclocking? my 4 gigs of DDR3 1600 RAM has its CAS set to 9-9-9-24. I understand that I'm probably gonna want to lower this number, but what should I start with and how drastic of a difference will it make?
CCC wont upgrade past 12.4 no matter what i do, tried straight upgrading, nothing, tried uninstalling, driver sweep, re installed still only went to 12.4

You're on the correct version, it's just not displaying it properly as CCC has a habit of doing that, I'm still on 11.6 according to CCC, but I'm not.

You said you read guides, every even most basic guide covers all these things, your reference clock influences not just your CPU, but also all other components that use it as a reference.
Just go and read a beginners guide on overclockers.net, they'll show you how to underclock properly before overclocking. Also it's not a good idea to go as far as 2,4 - 3,2 if you have never done this before, next you're telling me you have a stock cooler.

I mean hell, you went straight from 2,4 to 3,2, are you mad? You are supposed to underclock, find all limitations, and then overclock in 2-3 hz steps.

well shit nigga i got this shit workin and went straight to 3.2 then decided to go for 3.4.
prime95 and OCCT tortured it for a few hours without any hitch, gonna do a few 24+ hour tests soon.
ps your english needs work
P.S. Your English needs a lot more work.
Anyone know any trust worthy third party sites I can download drivers from? I need some network drivers and the ones supplied by Gigabyte are nearly a year old, after some research I found that there have been several updates since. I tried the network card manufacturer's(Atheros) website but they don't appear to provide drivers for them.
Well uhm it depends on what kind of drivers for what??

Network drivers for an Atheros AR8151. From a quick search there are quite a few sites claiming to have lots of drivers for various pieces of hardware but I am unsure how many of them are trustworthy.

TBH doing it in small steps takes waaay too much time. My first OC i brought my E8400 up from 3GHz to 3.6GHz, then to 4GHz shortly after. It's all about the big jumps. If it's unstable, keep ramping up the voltage till it's stable again (within reason).
What do you guys recommend?

All come with 100 or 200 minutes (doesn't matter to me), unlimited texts and some data.
If you didn't even check the limits of your motherboard beforehand it's pretty pointless.
And I don't know what kind of freezer you guys ive in, but if you can just add a GHz to your CPU without jumping far beyond the 60° I can only congratulate you.

Best choice is the SII

Thanks for the help but the ones provided by Gigabyte are newer than those.
I'm having another issue which new network drivers may resolve; currently, my connection is only 100mbit when it should be gigabit. All networking hardware are capable of gigabit speeds, I've forced it to gigabit at full duplex in the options(by default it is auto-negotiation) and my old motherboard which I used in the same position was operating at gigabit speeds too.
I did also have this very same motherboard working at gigabit speeds but to solve some unrelated hardware issues I had to disconnect it from the network and upon rejoining the speeds were back down to 100mbit.

My first overclocking experience was with an i7 870(stock clock 2.93Ghz), I had no idea what I was doing so I just bumped up the base clock until the total clock was 4.5Ghz, and that failed. So I bumped it down to 4.2Ghz and it has been there ever since, never goes above 62*c under Prime95 or IBT, sitting under a Hyper 212+.

Well it got up to the mid/upper 60's. Considering it's c0 stepping it's not too shabby.

4,2 GHz, you better back that up with some benchmarks.

Holy...Thanks! I might consider that too, although I'm still leaning towards the Lumia 800.

ah yeah the Lumia 800 is great, another of my friends managed to get it for free before it was released with some contest run by Nokia
It's really nice to use, smoother than any Android phone I've tried and on par with/smoother than iOS in some things. Don't get put off by the specs - 1.4GHz single core processor doesn't mean its not capable. It's beautiful to hold, Nokia still make the best hardware imo

Not sure about games and apps for it though.

I'll get them too you in a few months when I am on vacation from boarding school :v:

The Windows Marketplace is almost desolate.
Hiya, I know this has been posted before but I need some kind of monitor locker...
when I'm playing games my mouse is moving from the game screen onto the other and resulting in minimizing my game... hope someone could find a program to help vs this.
For those currently using Windows 8, is it worth waiting slightly longer and getting it or just going for Windows 7? I'm not too bothered about UI changes, i'm concerned mainly about pure performance i.e. is Win8 generally better performing?

Yes
will I be ok powering a 560 ti and a 2500k on a 500w psu? It's an OCZ modular one, not some shitty IED
That should be fine, though I wouldn't recommend an OCZ PSU to anyone because they aren't OEM'd by Seasonic.

OCing RAM is generally not worth the effort.
So, I'm going to be content for sipwicket, what's pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys? They're eating 27.8gb of space on my SSD, I probably should've moved or deleted them ages ago, any thoughts?
disable hibernation, move pagefile to another drive.
what's the best way of uninstalling display drivers? going from a 5770 to a 560ti tomorrow and I don't want any driver clashes
