Can someone help me? Whenever I try to put steam in offline mode it doesn't work.
I keep getting a message saying that "offline mode is unavailable because there is no steam login information stored on this computer"
Help?
Did you check "Remember my password" on the login screen?
Also, as a word of warning, make sure that you put Steam in offline mode BEFORE you lose connection, since it simply won't work a lot of times if you don't have connection. I really hope they do something about that.
I'm considering buying an SSD harddrive, any recommendations for one under $165?
[editline]4th July 2012[/editline]
I've been scoping a OCZ Vertex 3 Series SATA III 2.5" SSD 60GB which costs about $95
What's a good sub $2000 laptop with a decent screen? None of that dark at the top and white at the bottom garbage.
I just installed the H80 on my stock clock i7 920. Goes to 100C in Prime95. I spent 5 hours installing it because I had to get my motherboard out of the case and it doesn't work. Fuck that.
[editline]4th July 2012[/editline]
My friend accidentally touched the thermal paste while helping me so it's a bit uneven. I suppose that isn't enough to let it go 40C over what it's meant to be with the H80 on stock clock.
I don't know what you did wrong, but I have a h60 in push pull and my 3570k overclocked runs at 60c under load. You should make sure you have proper fan configuration and air pressure in your case.

What is your budget? Get a crucial m4 if under a budget, or a intel 520 if not. The ocz will probably have faster benchmarks, but for one, you won't notice the difference, and two the crucial and intel are much more reliable.

Look at the sager 15 and 17in and the asus g75/g73.
Alright. I've noticed that the Intel 520 has a much faster writing speed than the Crucial m4 one, so I might buy an Intel 60GB. I don't worry too much about space considering that I have about 4TB of space existing already. But do you think a 60GB would be too little? And is it worth $115 (which it costs here)?

I wouldn't buy an Intel SSD unless it was on sale (It was in my case). Sure, they're the fastest and most reliable SSDs available, but they come with hefty price tag. 60GB feels a little small to me, because I've used 90GB on my 120GB. I'd say get a different brand 120GB. 60GB is enough to work with, but too small to give you breathing room. Windows takes up about 20GB on it's own.
I'm trying to avoid anything from the internet. Bandwidth has been going over board lately. So backing up the games to DVDs will greatly help me in the future should something go wrong. Plus it'd make things easier in a lot of ways.
Well, you would need RW (rewritable) if you wanted to re-backup your games when they get updated so you don't ever have to re-download the updates.

60GB would be enough, but I'm on 64gb and I still need to make sure I do plenty of cleaning on my SSD as well as installing stuff on my other drives.
Steam.exe for me is constantly using 33% CPU. About a minute after steam has fully loaded, its CPU time remains almost constant at a third of my total CPU capabilities. Anyone know what's causing this, or how it can be stopped?
I don't know of anything I did recently that might cause it to do this, have installed a few programs recently but afaik none on the "programs that interfere with steam" list. I've disabled the overlay and stopped it downloading everything, not to mention restarting it multiple times (as well as the computer of course).

Question is if it's actually worth to spend that much money on 60GB when I can spend less with better speed and twice the storage. For example A-Data's S510; read 550 MB/s and write 510 MB/s with 120GB (twice the amount!) and with pretty good software (according to the general consensus).
[editline]4th July 2012[/editline]
Here's what I have in mind now:
Crucial m4 2.5" 128GB; Write 175 MB/s, Read 415 MB/s: Marvell 88SS9174-BLD2
Samsung 830 Series MZ-7PC128 128GB; Write 320 MB/s, Read 520 MB/s: Samsung S4LJ204X01
A-Data 500 Series S510 120GB; Write 510 MB/s, Read 550 MB/s: SandForce SF-2200
Intel 520 Series 2.5" SSD 60GB; Write 475 MB/s, Read 550 MB/s: SandForce SF-2200
Shouldn't you also consider what work you'll be doing on the computer as well? Seeing as I photograph a lot and make movies, wouldn't A-Data be the best choice considering it is faster, has more storage and is cheaper than the Intel one?
Is it possible to make Alt + F4 shortcut to instantly shut down the computer instead of opening the shut down tab?

No
Most of those 510/550 drives are using the Sandforce controller. It's on the shittier end of SSD controllers, and can make very fast speeds in very controlled conditions. In reality, performance and reliability are much worse, but A-Data (And every other Sandforce SSD maker) put the misleading benchmarks up and present them as consistent speeds. The best price/speed/capacity/reliability drive right now is the Crucial M4. Excluding price, the Intel 520 series is the best.

I updated my post with the controllers. I noticed that the Intel 520 series uses the Sandforce controller - so I presume that the 520 series utilize the Sandforce control better compared to A-Data or have I missed something?
Also, I'm curious about the Samsung one because of it's reviews and faster write/read speed compared to Crucial M4. I presume that the controller 830 series uses (Samsung S4LJ204X01) isn't up to par with Crucial M4's?

First point is interesting. The intel is still leagues better than that A-Data, yet it does use the same controller. I'm guessing Intel did something different with it, otherwise it wouldn't be considered to be so much better.
Second point, I haven't kept up with Samsung's SSD game, and nobody in the thread has recommended them. Judging by the AnandTech benchmarks on actual usage, they are very competitive in performance, and beats other SSDs in many categories. I think I was wrong with my initial recommendation, because that Samsung would probably be the best SSD available by price at the moment.
That Adata still looks pretty mediocre in most usage scenarios. Not as bad as I initially thought (Never seen anything good come from them) but not really the top of the pack
[editline]4th July 2012[/editline]
edit: yeah, looks like Intel did some pretty serious work with reliability on the sandforce controller.

Thanks for your help :)
I'll go with the Samsung! Apparently there isn't much difference with 830 and M4, but the 830 is cheaper and I feel like Samsung is more reliable.
Thanks again for your help!
Is there a way to FTP something from a server to another server without downloading it to my PC and then uploading it to the other server?
I've never had an issue with Steam offline mode, if my internet goes out, I do whatever. If I want to restart Steam I choose offline mode and it works just as fine.

FTP client on the other server? If you don't have anything other than FTP access on the receiving server, I don't think you can.

I see, thanks anyway.

Is there a way to do this, if so how would i go about doing it?

Would this be a good laptop for the price? As far as I can tell, it will perform decently in games and it isn't ridiculously heavy. If this isn't too good a choice, are there any laptops around $800 that are better?
I modified the gaming rig I'm buying again, can anyone tell me if this is a good setup?

This SHOULD be the final order, as it's already in my cart.

Pretty good rig, but two things; Do you plan on using the stock intel heatsink? It's kinda crappy. And I don't think you need to buy those fans, they are a bit pricey. At that price, you should get some gentle typhoons.
Yeah, the person who is receiving this doesn't plan to overclock or anything.
[editline]4th July 2012[/editline]
Removed the fans
Pick a better monitor, Acer is shit

Then why get a 3570k? He could save cash or put it towards a better gpu.
