I'm not certain the settings have much of an effect at all, but have you checked in your steam settings and set your estimated bandwidth properly? It defaults to quite a slow connection iirc.
I guessed that the download area would have been the problem but that didn't change much of anything. I only thought that the network speed was for the poll/hardware survey thing.
I checked out the resource monitor and noticed that my network is apparently averaging around 10 Mbps.

Yet while downloading on steam i seem to average around 500 kbps. It shows that my antivirus (Kaspersky) is downloading/uploading the same amount. Can i reduce how much it uses/should i get another antivirus?
e: seems to have completely disappeared, although still getting 300kbps
There's a difference. Network bandwith is usually measured in BITS per second, whereas speeds are usually measured in BYTES per second. 10 Mbps is equivalent to about 1.25 MB/s.
So yes or no.
Your post didn't answer the question so well.

Didn't see this post till now.
According to Cox, I should have 22 Mbps.
That'd be DOCSIS 3.0 territory. The fact that they never provided you with a new modem shows a great deal of incompetence on their part, here you can't even sign up for services in that speed range without switching your modem.
Normally yes, which is why a lot of tutorials online recommend you back up your files. I've been bookmarking a few pages so I can root my Galaxy Nexus but I haven't done it yet.
You've obviously been bookmarking pages from some terrible sources.
So, college has necessitated a laptop and I've come in unprepared. I've been looking around for a laptop on newegg, but I'm not really sold on anything. This was about the only rig I found that I liked, but it's at the higher end of my $1000 USD budget. Can any of you lovely people help me a bit?
Not sure how Toshiba is for quality, but this one looks pretty good for the price. $750, 1600x900 screen, high-end Fusion processor, 6GB of RAM, 750GB hard drive, Blu-Ray drive.
Graphics are weak, so don't expect to run Crysis or anything, but it should be good for school.
They're pretty darn weak.

i want to install 2 sticks of ram ontop of the 2 sticks i have (yes i have 2 free slots 4 total) and i'm just wondering, do i just stick the sticks in the open slots then boot up my computer?
or do i have to do something more to make it recognize the ram?

Just throwing them in and booting should be fine.
great, thanks
great, thanks
As long as the RAM has the same specs. Well... depending on your motherboard also.

That looks great, actually. Thanks. I basically need a laptop that can perform adequately in CS6, among other things. Basic multimedia production is all it really needs to do, but if I'm dropping the money, I might as well get a computer that I can use for other things after classes as well.
Can anyone vouch for Toshiba's laptop build quality?
Their build quality is good as long as it has airflow and you're gentle with it. My sisters hinge broke because she abused it by holding it on the edge and pressing the screen against things but it should be fine.
Got a popup right after I started the computer this morning: "Windows must now restart because the Plug and Play service terminated unexpectedly". Didn't get that anymore after restarting. Virus or not?
Personally I doubt it's a virus, but they've done worse things.
What is the minimum optimal space on a drive required for windows 7 to run properly?
I think its 18.5 gigs.
[editline]6th September 2012[/editline]
Nevermind, its 16 gigs.
What is the minimum optimal space on a drive required for windows 7 to run properly?
Minimum.
Optimal.
Required.
Properly.
Which one is it?
You could survive on 30GB, but that would take a lot of management I'd say. 64Gb is the minimum I recommend.
What's the program that cleans your pc from extra junk? Like the cache from websites, explorer shit
Ccleaner?

RAMdrive it.
Got my new laptop today and I think it's idling a little high.
Intel i5 2.50ghz Ivy Bridge - Currently at ~55, around 60+ watching a video
8.00GB RAM DRR3 665MHz
Clevo CO W150ER - Currently at ~55, around 60+ watching a video
Is this normal? I've never had experience laptop temperatures.
Laptops generally do run a bit hotter than desktops, and Ivy Bridge runs hotter than most processors. 55-60 under light load is a bit worrying, though - I would expect closer to 40-45 degrees.
Of course, if it doesn't actually cause problems, it's fine. My old laptop would work fine up to 90 degrees or so.

I'm more gentle with electronics than a lot of people. Hell, my 6 year old Sony Ericsson w580i still looks brand new and can somehow still hold its charge for a week. I honestly don't get how people can scratch screens up the way they do; they must be really rough with their devices. Anyways, thanks for the help. Most likely going to go the Toshiba route as that laptop is priced just right for what it's offering.
My screens get scratched to hell cause I always have shit in my pockets, keys, coins, sand.
Sand?
beaches mang
I'm always in dusty and dirty enviroments, and somehow sand gets in my pocket.
Why would you put your keys in the same pocket as your phone! My old phone (3 years) has like 2 scratches only visible with the screen off, and I never used a screen protector on it.
I keep my keys in a lanyard around my neck
that way the only thing they could harm is my chest or stomach and I'm not exactly made of tissue paper.
