My sister was running a GBA emulator on her laptop and all of a sudden today all of her files are gone, and all of the settings on her computer reverted to the default. She said that she also updated javascript, if that makes a difference. Anybody have any idea what happened here, and if possible, how can this be reversed?
How do I fix the "Steam.exe (main exception): To run steam, you must first connect to the internet." error when I start Steam.exe?
you must first connect to the internet
Looks like I'll have to buy an external drive to back up my files after all. I can't make a partition for Windows 7 on my HDD that has all my files since it's dynamic, and to convert it to basic I have to wipe it.

Sounds like a virus.
How long should chdsk take on a 2TB WD elements? It's on like less than 1/10th after four hours :smithicide:
...Updated javascript? Sounds like a virus.
she probably meant java

She backed up her files on an external hard drive to be safe and is now following some of the steps detailed here. I don't understand, though, how did it get corrupted in the first place?

Works out much cheaper in the end too.

Is there an antivirus thread in here? If not, what antivirus should I take? I've been directed to MSE a few times, but I'm not sure on it. Any recommendations?
Is there an antivirus thread in here? If not, what antivirus should I take? I've been directed to MSE a few times, but I'm not sure on it. Any recommendations?
I use MSE. It's fast, it's free, and it actually seems to detect things most of the time. Sure beats AVG, my previous AV.
is it safe to buy a 'netbook' they are in like a different section and look iffy
If all you want to do is use the MS Office suite, a netbook will do you fine. Office isn't all too processor intensive, so a netbook shouldn't struggle much at all with it. Spring for an SSD if you want to guarantee smooth performance. It's free, it's made by Microsoft, and it's pretty speedy at what it does without bogging down your system (I'm looking at you Webroot). It offers decent protection while casually browsing and it can scan downloaded files, but if you need more than standard protection, I'd recommend you take a look at Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. I've heard pretty good things from it, and a lot of people around here seem to like it, so I'd say that is'a a safe bet if you're looking to go beyond the featureset of MSE. And for God's sake stay away from Kapersky.

MBAM is what I use to double-check a suspicious file, or to clean out an infection on an already-compromised system. But don't rely on it for day-to-day usage.
I Am on the internet... But it won't even start logging in or anything.
Is this happening on the computer you're posting from now or from some other computer?
Is this happening on the computer you're posting from now or from some other computer?
The computer I'm posting on. The internet ranges from "Delete everything but steam.exe and you steamapps folder" to "no that guys an idiot uninstall everything reinstall windows and get a lawyer"
try deleting clientregistry.blob first that's usually the culprit, if it isn't, delete everything but steam.exe and steamapps and launch steam.exe
try deleting clientregistry.blob first that's usually the culprit, if it isn't, delete everything but steam.exe and steamapps and launch steam.exe
Running the installer and hitting repair works in some cases too. But try these quoted first
.blob worked. Thanks!
is there a way to reinstall steam without deleting all of my game files, that doesn't involve spending half a day moving all of the folders to a new location?

I've never even touched Malwarebytes software, but I've seen people around here mention it quite a bit, so I threw it in as a sidenote.
I'm looking for some quiet 120mm case fans with good airflow as well. I'm currently using these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185059 and want to replace them due to their noise.
All of these are relatively cheap, and don't have LEDs. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185058 is a decent fan. 3 pin connector http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103052 is a 4 pack of some weaker fans. Quiet, but the airflow is somewhat low. Also 3 pins. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185144 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103069 These two have a 4 pin power connector, so it works with a controller and is variable RPM. May or may not be relevant/important to you. I know you said you want quiet, but if you need to move a metric fuck ton of air: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185054 I'd probably recommend item 3, as it is listed as being marginally quieter than 4, and I know from experience that it is actually quiet and that the db listing isn't just a fabricated value.
If possible, I need a quick response for this. Are there any programs like ManyCam I can use to adjust my webcam brightness for Skype, that DON'T rape my processor?
is there a way to reinstall steam without deleting all of my game files, that doesn't involve spending half a day moving all of the folders to a new location?
delete everything except steamapps
delete everything except steamapps
okay. Well, I did that, but I still have this problem where STALKER: shadow of chernobyl causes my computer to bluescreen when I try to load a save or a new game, or when I try to verify my game cache. It also happened with Tribes Ascend, except I didn't get the verification problem and I wasn't even able to get to the main screen, but it's downloading a couple hundred files that were missing/corrupted so I'll see if it works then. I have tried reinstalling, updating drivers etc, but nothing seems to work.
Quick question here; I recently took a quiz for one of my secondary classes in my Social Media course and I missed a question that I thought was fairly straightforward. The question was something to the effect of: "Which of the following image filetypes can be edited indefinitely while still retaining its original accuracy?" I got the choices of "JPG, TIFF, PNG, and for some reason PDF. I knew PDF and JPG were out of the question, but aren't TIFF and PNG both lossless extension? This had me confused, and I should have picked TIFF to be safe anyways, but I chose PNG because as far as I know it can be edited as many times as you want without any compression-related degradation. Am I wrong in this assumption? To note, I did just fine on the test and this incorrect answer didn't affect much anyways, but i want to make sure I don't have a skewed understanding of these extensions. Thanks.
