I had a few more questions about the static electricity thing. Most of my house is made of carpet with the exception of my kitchen, which i most likely wouldn't be able to build on, would i be able to build on a carpet floor standing up with no socks on a granite desk? I heard that touching the unpainted metal on the back of the case doesn't work, and you need to plug in a power supply while using an anti-static bracelet to ground yourself, does it need to be a plugged in power supply or will the touching the unpainted metal on the back of the case work? Would my motherboard be destroyed if i accidently touched the bottom of it with the standoffs/screws or metal in the case? Sorry that i'm fretting over this, i can't stop thinking about this. Everything else sounds so easy but this particular thing. It's just this one thing that keeps bothering me, because if i fuck it up i can't RMA it to Newegg and i just wasted $700 i'll never be able to use.
what's a good software for backing up files?
Check out Cobian Backup - http://www.cobiansoft.com/index.htm Lots of features, easy to use and best of all its free.

I've built a PC *on* carpet, and didn't static-fry anything. And I forgot standoffs, still didn't break it (it didn't boot, but it worked fine once I remembered to put them in - that was one of my earliest builds). It really is "this easy".

You'll be fine, you're not going to fry anything. Buy a bracelet or just touch some sort of piece of metal while you're doing it. [editline]18th September 2012[/editline] If you DO fry anything just tell them it was DOA, cause you never know if it was DOA or if it was your fault. [editline]18th September 2012[/editline] Also don't wear shoes or socks while you're doing it and just like I said, try to grab the corners of everything. As long as your hands are on the PCB you'll be fine.
What did you use to ground yourself?
Just the side panel of the case. Seriously, the stuff is pretty hard to break.
Just the side panel of the case. Seriously, the stuff is pretty hard to break.
I've been under alot of stress thinking about this but you may have solved it. My dad's putting pressure on me saying "You might screw it up by yourself." but not only that. A friend of mine told me if the motherboard touches the metal of the case it shorts. Everybody else says that you need a plugged in power supply. Thanks though, i'm less worried than i was before.
A friend of mine told me if the motherboard touches the metal of the case it shorts.
Only if you don't use standoffs. Even then I think if you never power it on in those conditions you might be able to get away with it.
Only if you don't use standoffs. Even then I think if you never power it on in those conditions you might be able to get away with it.
I have. As long as you turn it off as soon as you realize it's not going to boot, you can probably get away with it. The general key is to just keep your cool. Don't panic. Make a checklist and follow it, if you're nervous. Don't rush things, but don't freeze up.
Just making sure, Standoffs are those four screw-things in the case that hold the motherboard in place right?
Has anyone here ever experienced a PCI-E soundcard gettign extreme interference from the videocard but it isn't EMI? I suspect that it must somehow be coming through the bus and am looking into ways to better ground the mainboard right now because the case is painted. I have never seen a soundcard get interference through the bus tho. [editline]19th September 2012[/editline]
Just making sure, Standoffs are those four screw-things in the case that hold the motherboard in place right?
Should be more than 4 and yes it's the screw things which you place the motherboard ontop of and then screw into.
Standoffs are usually copper screws/bots with screw holes in them that you place in the holes in your case so that they line up with the holes in your mother board. Then you put your motherboard on top of them, and screw it onto the standoffs. Tighten the standoffs securely into your case, and then lightly tighten the screws that go through the motherboard into the standoffs. It's pretty straight forward. Just make sure you: -don't have standoffs in spots where there is no hole in the motherboard. This can potentially short it out. -have the motherboard attached with too few screws. If your holes don't line up, don't force it. Sometimes you end up missing a hole or two. This isn't a problem. As long as you have 4 contact points for a micro atx board, and 5-6 for a full atx board with one on each corner, you are fine. -don't over tighten the screws. The last thing you want is to have your standoff back out before the screw if you need to take something out. Go ahead and put the standoffs in snugly, but don't get anywhere close to sheering them off. 3 fingers on the screw driver for bolting the board in. Too much pressure not only makes it possible for your standoffs to come out instead of the screws when attempting to loosen them, but you run the risk of crushing your board. Remember. Your goal here is to attach it, not weld it into your case. -Avoid touching connectors. Leave the protective cover on the CPU socket until you are ready to install it. Beyond that, just watch where you grab things. The entire underside of the board is generally safe to touch, and it wont get damaged if you place it on a table top. I'm assuming this is your first build. Nobody is going to bitch if it takes you 6 hours to put all the pieces together. Use your judgement, and take it slowly. There's no rush, and you have to work to damage equipment these days (IE wearing rubber gloves with boots on). You will do it faster next time, and eventually you will be able to do a full assembly in 30-45 minutes provided you don't run into any problems that need finesse/brute force. If you are feeling paranoid, install the CPU, RAM and heat sink, and then hook up the power supply (you don't have to install the PSU just yet, just plug in the power) and do a quick test. EDIT: You'd also better post some guts pictures so we can make fun of your cable management.
I'll probably just get the H100 then since I also like the aesthetics of it compared to an air cooler. And do I NEED water cooling? Not exactly but its 100 bucks, my friend has one with an i5 and 35 idle and 50 at full load and I would love temps that low. I plan on doing a slight overclock to 4.0 ghz if all goes well so I would definitely love to have that instead of an air cooler.
You can get better temperatures for cheaper with a good air cooler.
God DAMN IT. I'm having such a fucking hard time finding a decent font viewer program that lets you preview fonts that aren't installed and located in a specific folder. Anyone?
repost, not sure if anyone answered :(
I asked on Toms Hardware about that laptop I wanted and they said to get this one instead: http://bit.ly/RwXiuo because I wouldn't need the 2gb 650m on the other one I picked. The price difference is only 45 euro. For reference here is the laptop I was going to get, http://bit.ly/V7yi0I Except I put in 8gb of RAM. Main difference is that my one has 750gb hard drive, an i7 and a 650m 2gb card. But they said the other one is Sager and better build quality or something. What do you reckon? Is my one worth the extra 45?
Is this a good monitor? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236049 its won the customer choice award 7 times and has great reviews. Also how much does contrast ratio matter? Cause this is only 20,000:1 compared to 50,000,000:1
Another question. Is there any way with dual screens to make it so say if you're gaming, the main screen doesn't minimize when say changing your pandora station or something on the other monitor?
The only real solution for this is to run in windowed mode. Some windows apps deal with it pretty well, though. IF you're playing source games, do -window -noborder in launch options
Crossposting this here from the Android thread:
I'm using MIUI v4, no problems except the option to set my number in Caller ID settings isn't . Is there another way to change it from 'unknown'? I've ordered a new GTX 570HD and a new Ultra LSP 600 Watt PSU. Decided to order both through amazon because I had a gift card that could help me. I have no credit/debit card, but my IT Teacher didn't mind placing the order under his card. He ordered the new 570HD and I covered the cost, he also has that Amazon Prime bullshit so he got the 2 day shipping for free. About a hour later I placed the order for the PSU under my gift card but got 1-3 Day shipping. Issue here is that I got the card first and not the PSU as I had hopped. The PSU I was running my GTX 550 Ti on was a 450 Watt ThermalTake. My question is that even though the GTX 570HD requires a 550 Watt PSU, can I rough it with a 450 Watt PSU for tonight to test this thing?

I've been running a very power intensive system (that includes a GTX570) on a Corsair 500w for a long, long time now without problems.

I'd say get only Corsair or OCZ for a power supply; I've been burned by an Ultra
I've only ever boguht Corsair and I've never had any issues with them in the 5+ builds I've done with them and friends.
