So I want to get into 3D Modeling and rendering and I also want to do animation, is that something that will be RAM intensive to where I need more than 8 gigs or will 8 be enough?
You can never have too much ram. I'd go ahead and go 16
You can never have too much ram. I'd go ahead and go 16
That's true to an extent. I've had tons of things I've "wanted to get into" that I looked back on and felt dumb for thinking of putting money towards something I may not like. He'd be fine with 8 if he's trying it out.
Sort of depends. 8 is 'enough', but it's not enough if you take things seriously. However it's so trivial to add more ram that it's a non issue. That and the prices are dropping at an inexorable rate, at least until DDR4 starts to roll out in the 2014 range.
Alright then, I'll mess around with it a bit and see if I like it. Just trying to find out what I want to do career wise in the computer industry. I'm thinking I'll mainly do IT work and Computer engineering but I want to try out animating and 3D shit. [editline]20th September 2012[/editline] Alright well this isn't exactly a hardware question but how the fuck do these orange boxes work on these measurements? I'm trying to get 0.118 thick plexiglass but then it gives me dimensions in the orange box and then 1/16 and 1/8 and all this other crap. Can anyone help me understand it? Considering I got my start on 4GB, and I've gotten Blender running in 384MB, I think 8GB should be plenty for starting out.
Only upgrade when you need to. That money can be spent on something a lot more useful in the meantime
Only upgrade when you need to. That money can be spent on something a lot more useful in the meantime
8 gigs is like €35 - €50 now? Hardly worth saving up.
8 gigs is like €35 - €50 now? Hardly worth saving up.
I meant any more than 8GB I know ram is piss cheap but it could be put to use when you spend lots on 16GB for no reason
Ah
What's a good brand for gaming laptops? How do I get the sound file out from this webpage, NSFW. http://yoitsu.net/DRAGON_DICK.png/
I have a 60gb drive with win7 on it, but I now plugged in my old 300gb drive with winxp on it, hoping to format it, except it now boots into my old windows XP partition and doesn't recognize the 60gb win7 drive anymore, I can't find it in the boot options menu, any ideas? ps it works fine without the 300gb drive plugged in, hence I'm posting from it

Any advice on transporting two 19" LCDs? Driving up to uni tomorrow (~1.5 hrs) and taking them with me. I don't have the original boxes, so should I just stand them up on the back seat?

If you're going to have them stand up then they need to be secured properly. [editline]21st September 2012[/editline] Can a 5770 run BF3 at 1280x1024 at a decent framerate around 40 FPS?

Or, alternatively, put them in the trunk with the fronts put together.
So I heard there was going to be a super critical polar shift soon. That will nuke all our electrical power and will pitch us back into the stone age. It will be a while before electronics can be used again, so we need to keep solid records of how to build all these machines from scratch. Anyone got any book suggestions for how to build a computer from scratch? I did a google and all I found were things related from parts, but I want to find a book that will tell me how to do it from scratch. Who knows, we were probably gods before 6000 years ago. Then there was a huge pole shift and knocked us back to the stone age. We need to be prepared! Also, super important algorithms should be stored securely in a non electrical format. Stone/Steel tablets Will CDs be effected?
My computer is coated in tinfoil. I'm prepared for all eventualities.
We're talking about EM pulses on a cosmic scale. Tin Foil wont get you through any of that. And plus, you'll still need a generator. You gonna cake an entire room in 100 feet of aluminum? (I think at that point, your soul would be disconnected from the rest of the world) And what good is 1 computer in a tiny area? Electronics have done us well as they spread across the globe like a web. The pole shift will screw us over for years because the magnetic sphere of the earth will be shattered into different charges. It will take a while for things to calm down again.

Why 2012? The answer traces back to true believers' interpretations (and reinterpretations) and various other ambiguous and nonscientific sources. :tinfoil:
So you're saying poleshifts don't happen or that they aren't catastrophic??

I want to remove Norton from my Laptop, but had an issue with my new Desktop where I uninstalled Norton through Control Panel, the uninstaller froze and turned off my audio and wouldn't let me use Windows Defender, did a system restore but it didn't complete, so I went into Safe mode and did it, Norton was back, didn't start up or open at all, used Norton Removal tool to get rid of it and installed Avast, but the PC was going slower, and it suddenly said I had a bunch of drives disconnected, like F,G,H, and I. So, I had to factory restore it, and am stuck with Norton for now on it(another damn 60 day trial). Basically, what I'm asking is, what should I do here? My Laptop has 5 days left of the Norton trial, and I don't want to have to factory restore it, as it is my University laptop, and has all of my important files on it. How would I go about removing Norton safely, and what would be the next best AV to install in its place?

I swear by MSE and Windows Defender, but I'm sure a lot of people disagree with me. As for removing Norton, I've no clue. Last time I messed with a computer that was gummed up with it, I couldn't get anywhere. It's so funny that Norton is supposed to remove malicious material from your computer, but it in itself if more malicious than anything on its probably pathetic definitions list.
I swear by MSE and Windows Defender, but I'm sure a lot of people disagree with me.
Nope. MSE does the job. It's what I install when building computers for family/friends. Its free. It's lightweight. It detects things. It can be easily configured. For a long time I swore by Nod 32, but MSE is quite frankly good enough.
