Nope. MSE does the job. It's what I install when building computers for family/friends. Its free. It's lightweight. It detects things. It can be easily configured. For a long time I swore by Nod 32, but MSE is quite frankly good enough.
I've just seen a lot of people bash on MSE. I've never had a problem with it, so I see no reason to use anything else. I barely notice it running during full system scans, it's caught a few nasty files I downloaded from admittedly shady websites, and it's made by a reputable company.
So I heard there was going to be a super critical polar shift soon. That will nuke all our electrical power and will pitch us back into the stone age. It will be a while before electronics can be used again, so we need to keep solid records of how to build all these machines from scratch. Anyone got any book suggestions for how to build a computer from scratch? I did a google and all I found were things related from parts, but I want to find a book that will tell me how to do it from scratch. Who knows, we were probably gods before 6000 years ago. Then there was a huge pole shift and knocked us back to the stone age. We need to be prepared! Also, super important algorithms should be stored securely in a non electrical format. Stone/Steel tablets Will CDs be effected?
Dude, your computer is the last thing you have to worry about were the poles to shift. Actually you most likely wouldn't have to worry about anything anymore.
So you're saying poleshifts don't happen or that they aren't catastrophic??
I think he's trying to say that they are a load of garbage which they are, because we predict this shit every other fucking week.
Only true way to remove norton is to put a rare earth magnet to your hard drive(s).
Even then, you may want to perform an exorcism just to be safe.
Okay, i've decided on mostly everything except my graphics card and hard drive. A friend of mine told me to get a Caviar Black because they're good, so i decided to check out the 1tb version. On the review page, i see alot of the reviews talk about how they fail often and even RMAing the type of hard drive atleast 6 times before getting a working one. About the graphics card, another friend told me that the GTX 550 Ti sucks and i should get a new one. The problem is that i'm on a really low budget, my max is $130.
The Black drives and fine, and yeah the GTX 550 Ti isn't very good. Better off saving up a little more for a better card.
Ok, so... Anyone know a safe way to remove Norton for real? I have 5 days before it expires, and I don't wanna have an unprotected PC, mainly because google searching told me that having 2 AVs at the same time isn't good, otherwise I'd install Avast or something.

Just find a way to get rid of norton, and pop MSE On there.
I take it you've already tried Symantec's Norton Removal Tool executable? Also, MSE should be fine installing with other AVs present. As long as Norton doesn't flip a shit over it, you should be fine having them installed at the same time. Both of them running at the same time might cause some strange things to happen, though.
Is this a nice laptop? http://www.trustedreviews.com/acer-aspire-timeline-u-m3-581t_Laptop_review I'm going to get a danish model without the graphics card, with the hybrid ssd/hdd, and i'm not sure if it will be i3 or i5, or if it's going be with 4 or 6 gb ram. I'm getting it for school mostly because of the size and the battery life. My friend has one already, and it feels pretty nice and solid.
It depends on the drive type. Is it IDE or SATA? Thinking about getting myself a server for a website. Is 100Gb of storage and 1 tb of bandwidth overkill?
Thinking about getting myself a server for a website. Is 100Gb of storage and 1 tb of bandwidth overkill?
yes
I was thinking about the Antec 300 Illusion full steel case but i've heard it has problems with its fans and its made out of a flimsy material. Should i still get this case or another one?
Is there a way to set one HDD the default for certain things? I want to use one of my HDD's strictly for steam games and origin games, is there a way to set the default download place to that specific HDD? Basically this is how I'm going to be running things, Small SSD with just enough room for Windows 7 so I can have a fast boot drive, 2 500 gig HDD's one is a Seagate and the other is a WD Caviar blue. The Caviar blue will be for all my photos, movies, music, etc. And the seagate is going to probably be for recording video. Are there options for the directory of where I want certain shit to go instead of having to manually drag it there myself? Cause it seems like it just takes more time that way... I'd try it out myself instead of asking this question but I'm on a laptop and I only have 1 HDD in it.

Something like properties->location, the rest is pretty easy to understand

[editline]21st September 2012[/editline] Also whats the cheapest, but most reliable SSD that I could use as stricly a boot drive.

Should i still get this case or another one?
It lacks good cable management, but a 50 dollar case usually isn't going to have top tier cable management. It's extremely durable from what I've, and its big enough to handle oddly shaped components. Just don't bother with the illusion unless you have a hardon for LED fans. Get the cheaper one without the two fans in the front, or get the one with USB 3 ports in front instead. I ended up replacing the top 140mm fan in the one I've used, but that was because someone dropped a pen in the grate at the top and it messed up the bearing, though apparently they are known for having some issues with the top fan just going bad after a few months. You can't get reliable and cheaper.

Cause obviously theres samsung, ADATA, Intel, etc. I basically mean out of all the reliable hard drives which is the cheapest? anywho, I'll get the Crucial M4 unless it would be worth it to get a samsung 830 or a cherryville by intel.

And the properties->location thing doesn't always work right - many programs ignore that in favor of just specifying the path to C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Documents. What I did was this: Install Windows to C:\ (the SSD) Move C:\Users\GMan to D:\Users\GMan, junction (mklink /j) the former to the latter (this requires making a second user account, as you cannot do this while logged in as GMan) Install Steam to D:\Steam Manually install a few other things under D:\ (mainly non-steam games)

Cause basically I'm going to have a 1TB - 2TB HDD for strictly games, a 500 gig for photos, music and movies. a 64 gig SSD for windows only and an extra 500 GB HDD for maybe recording fraps videos or something like that.

It's the cheapest highly reliable SSD that I am aware of at the moment. The m4 starts at 70 dollars or something. Samsung 830s are like 75 I think, and the Intel ones start at 130 dollars (but also start at 120 GB instead of 60)
The M4 is fine - I have a 128GB one, it's cheap and I've had no problems with it.
I'm looking for a nice 16:10 monitor. I have a Dell S199WFP 19" right now, and it's 1440x900. Budget is up to $160. I would like one preferably in 1680x1050 or 1920x1200 and 22"-24". Can you guys help? I play a lot of Osu! and Counter-Strike if that helps.
[editline]21st September 2012[/editline] Can a 5770 run BF3 at 1280x1024 at a decent framerate around 40 FPS?

How can I share my internet connection to another router? [img] http://s9.postimage.org/kq6wmze4v/diagram.jpg [/img]
Either set up packet forwarding on your PC (no idea how that's done on Windows) so it acts like a router, or set up a connection directly between the two routers. And I assume you have multiple Ethernet ports on the PC? Or multiple network interfaces of some kind - Ethernet + WiFi?
