I need a recommendation for a permanent data eraser that can do free space wipes. Stuff "deleted" by Cybershredder I can still recover, and the free space tool in CCleaner is a pile of dicks.

Lets you choose between Gutmann or US DoD wiping (3 or 7 passes).
EDIT: and yes, it can wipe only free space, even though it doesn't mention that on the page
what do you mean it wipes free space
what do you mean it wipes free space
It looks at all the space that's marked "free", which just means that the inodes have been unlinked but the data is still there, and then it actually deletes it by overwriting it.
EDIT: or whatever the Windows equivalent of an inode is... who the fuck knows how NTFS works
but basically when you "delete" a file, it's like marking a house as "condemned"... it has no address but it's still there until someone actually comes along and demolishes it
alright, iv cleaned up the dust in my computer, added some new thermal paste, and installed a Rocketfish heatsink+fan. now im running at around 33C. the thing is pretty loud, which will be really annoying when im recording instruments to my computer, but i can live with that i guess.
are there any specific programs i can use to see if my computer's performance has improved? im 100% sure there is, but i dont know which ones to use. also, does anyone know of a way to lower the sound of the fans?

I ended up trying that after I posted and it works, but thanks anyway. Make a nice alternative to SDelete on my little brother's computer.
Nexus 7 or iPad basically.
Haha, i kept asking her questions to help me figure out what to get her and it annoyed her enough that she spilled the beans and said it was for me :v: tricky devil.
Okay so I'm picking a new processor and a new motherboard for my PC, I want an i7 and I wanna know what do those numbers like "2770K" or "3770S" mean and what difference do they make. And about the motherboard, is there any thing specific I should know when picking one? Any specific brands or whatever?

Asrock, Asus, MSI, or Gigabyte z77 motherboard, just get one that's the right form-factor (ATX or MicroATX usually).
The S and T mean low power (I think), the K means overclockable. Get the 3770k if you ever want to overclock or don't mind spending the tiny extra amount over a 3770.
Also for the motherboard, there are several different sockets that seem to be able to hold an i7, but does it matter which one of those I get?
1155, if it's a z77 chipset motherboard it will be 1155.
Also for the motherboard, there are several different sockets that seem to be able to hold an i7, but does it matter which one of those I get?
Depends on the generation of the i7.
If you look at the technical details it should tell you the socket, just match that to the motherboard socket.
I'm making a new build, specs here.
CPU: Core i3 2220
Motherboard: Asrock h77m
RAM: Crucial 8GB
CASE: Corsair Carbide Series 200R
PSU: XFX 450w
GPU: Sapphire HD 7850
Do I need a PCI adapter for wireless internet? I'm a total noob at this.

Probably been asked a few thousand times, but can anyone recommend a decent pre-built computer for games and such?

Budget? Country? Reasons you don't want to build it yourself and save tons of money?

Do you know anybody that can build a PC?
If not, or you're hellbent on getting a pre-built, try this or this.

Bro seriously I was clueless and had no idea what I was doing. Within 2 hours of internet searching I was taking apart my old PC and rebuilding it.

When building your own you will get far better price to performance ratio.

Well that helps a bit I suppose, but I would still need to figure out what hardware to get and everything.

My mum's the one who's hellbent on getting a refurbished computer at Best Buy for around $200 because we're flat broke. I should probably just wait until I get a decent paying job.

I need a laptop to complement my gaming computer and I have no idea what I want in it. It needs to just not be slow as fuck browsing the internet, typing and reading stuff, light/old game gaming. This is what I was considering
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+15.6%22+Laptop+-+6GB+Memory+-+750GB+Hard+Drive+-+Black/6769421.p?id=1218806578389&skuId=6769421&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=6769421&extensionType=pla:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!37678873159!g!!18463087999
but when I tried it it seemed a little slow.
So I just need to know what PSU to get and possibly a change of motherboard as well. Any suggestions?
Intel Core i5 3470
MSI Z77A-G41
Sapphire HD 7770 GHz Edition 1GB GDDR5
Corsair Vengeance DDR3,1600-8GB KIT
Sharkoon T28
Western Digital Harddisk 3.5" 500GB, SATA600, 7200rpm, WD5000AAKX

When you're looking at computers that cheap, you'll get a lot more for your money by buying a used desktop from Craigslist or Kijiji. Refurbished PCs are fine too, though many are business-level. What that means for you is the video card is probably going to be crap.
If you post your city's craigslist page, one of us could probably skim through and find something.
EDIT: Do you already have a desktop? If so, building a PC might work if you could reuse the DVD drive, hard drive and possibly the case.

Can only get Georgia when trying to find my city. I'm in the Augusta/Waterville area.

This thing is completely useless. HP Pavilion Slimline s7600n, and everything in it is years outdated.
