You notice input changes twice as fast, videos have no input.
Fucking inputs.
Why is it that you can easily tell the difference of 30 fps and 60 fps in game, but once you record it at 30 fps, and watch it, you can't really tell if its 60 fps or 30 fps?
Couple reasons:
1) Framerate affects input latency. At 30fps, it's a minimum of 33ms between you clicking a button and the action happening. At 60fps, it's down to 16ms. When you're playing, that's noticeable, but when you're just watching the video, input latency doesn't matter.
2) Consistency. Most monitors refresh at 60Hz, so anything above 60fps gets displayed as 60fps. But when you're running at 30fps, it's usually not locked to 30fps. Instead it runs at some varying framerate between the two, which effectively looks like flickering between 30fps and 60fps. A 30fps video, however, is a consistent, solid 30fps.
3) Blending. Depending on your software, when it records a 60fps video at 30fps, it may take two 60fps frames and motion-blend them to get 30fps.
A friend of mine has a problem in Skyrim where he plays for five minutes and gets a white screen.
His card is a HD 5770.
He just set it back to default clock speed, now he gets a black screen where he can still see the HUD.
Laptops.
I'm looking for a new laptop to use for gaming and preferably can play dark souls and planetside 2 at reasonable levels. Would I need something pretty high end for that?

It's around $1000 with shipping to the UK, can anyone recommend a better alternative, primary uses are gaming. Would prefer UK based company, or somewhere that ships cheaply to the UK.
Pc Specialist are a UK company and do a similar laptop for a similar price. My mate got a laptop from there, he treats it like shit and it still works fine.

Clear cache, flush DNS, different browser, different computer?
Considering ripping all my old VHS tapes to my NAS en masse, what tools would H&S suggest? I'd like something that auto stops recording when the tape ends, even better if it prompts me to insert the next tape. I don't want something that I have to set up every time I want to rip the next tape.
Is there any point in getting 16gb of ram? I hear that a lot of gamers are getting more ram up to 16gb and it actually helps in games.

It doesn't help. It's really cheap, though, and when you have that much you canrun a RAM disk and stuff.

even the most modern games don't utilize 16GB of RAM. But honestly if you're interested in anything like virtualization, servers and stuff, ramdisks suddenly become super useful.
Anyone who has installed Windows 8 (or anything) via Dreamspark:
How long does it usually take before you get a certified account after you request it, or should I just torrent?

You should be asking the person at your university that works with those accounts. I've had multiple semesters where I didn't get my login details until I requested them.
Okay I'll just always ask the person at the exact route of the issue instead of a forum thanks.

The software that you download will be in an .iso format. An .iso file is neither the application, nor an installer. You will need to burn the .iso to a DVD/CD before you will be able to install it. Please see the attached Disc Image Burning Guide if you need help burning your .iso to a DVD/CD. If you have questions about installing your VMware or DreamSpark software, please consult with your instructor.
Have a great semester and enjoy your free software.

Apparently my Edinburgh University email adress which I use every day isn't a valid Edinburgh University email address. Now I have to wait for the variable amount of years Microsoft will take to reply to my email about it.

Well the Edinburgh Napier website directs me to the dreamspark page and auto logs in.
Do EU not do that?
[editline]7th January 2013[/editline]
Atleast I dont remember ever logging in directly.
I have a 100mb partition on my 1tb hard drive that's really annoying me. I think Windows created it when it was installing. It was named '(D:)System Reserved'. Is it safe to remove it? I have hidden files set to visible, and it shows the drive as empty, but apparently 30mb is used up by a folder called 'boot'. Can I safely delete this? It is not on the same hard drive as my Windows installation.

I found this page but you still have to go through the same Dreamspark registration process, which is where I encounter an error. I'm very close to giving up and torrenting it, since I should be able to get it anyway if it weren't for this joke of a process.

Well, if you don't mind being wired, just plug it into a USB port like normal. Windows will detect it as a gamepad and you're good to go. Wireless is what fucks up though.

It's important.
So I wasn't sure if I should make a thread about it so I thought i would ask it here first. I just got my new computer put together and it turns on but I cannot get any sort of display. I have a bare drive in it which I have yet to be able and install windows 7 on it (I plan on doing it through USB). I've unplugged the GPU from the PSU and have both VGI and HDMI plugged into the motherboard and just get a no signal from the monitor. Do I need to completely take out the GPU from the motherboard?
This is what I have in it.

That's correct. In some cases the integrated graphics are disabled when there's a dedicated GPU installed.
