Assuming your CPU isn't a bottleneck, your overclock is almost exactly proportional to your performance gain. For example, for a given GPU, 1.1 GHz will be 10% faster than 1 GHz, so you'll get 55 fps instead of 50, etc.
please please please don't be serious otherwise i would advise not giving advice here
blunk, you've angered sipwickett.
Tech advice card REMOVED. You are henceforth banished from the thread of hasty inquiries.
cool should i use the asus GPU tweak that came with the card or the AMD catalyst that I already have installed. Or does it really matter what I use to overclock it?
The AMD one has never worked for me. I have never tried the ASUS one, but I don't have a card from them. MSI afterburner works well, but if I change the memory clock at all, everything goes to shit.
Does anybody know if they ever made IDE Blu-Ray drives?
Does anybody know if they ever made IDE Blu-Ray drives?
Really really doubtful. The closest you might get is some kind of sata -> IDE conversion if that's even possible
Really really doubtful. The closest you might get is some kind of sata -> IDE conversion if that's even possible
Yeah, I saw several IDE->SATA converters. Kind of pricey, considering I don't really need this at all (if I need to watch Blu-Ray, I can use my laptop). Or I could get a long SATA cable and a PCIe SATA card - I've seen a few that had both eSATA ports on the outside and SATA ports on the inside.
How old is your computer if it doesn't have SATA ports?
Uh no, there isn't a "proportional formula" like that. The clock speed vs performance gain depends on a lot of different factors

please please please don't be serious otherwise i would advise not giving advice here
Read the post carefully, it's completely accurate. This is simple stuff, I'm not sure why it's so hard to believe? Just did a quick test myself with a Q6600 at 3GHz and a 5850. With the GPU at 360 MHz (slow because a Q6600 is a shit match for a 5850 at full speed, was still getting 60-70% CPU usage), I got 61.4 FPS in a L4D2 timedemo, and with the GPU running 20% faster (432 MHz) I got 70.2 FPS, which is a 16% increase. Sure it's not perfectly proportional, but it's close if your CPU is capable of keeping up (which mine isn't.)
How old is your computer if it doesn't have SATA ports?
It's a 2006 Mac Pro that I was referring to. It's old, yes, but I'm on a bit of an upgrade spree - already added 4GB more memory and a new video card. It does have SATA ports, but they're positioned in such a way that they can't be used for the optical drive. The existing optical drives are connected via IDE. Although I just did some Googling, and apparently there are some additional SATA ports behind the front fan enclosure. I didn't even realize you could remove that. So it turns out I can use a SATA BD-drive. (Assuming that info is correct)

Sometimes you gotta love their "slide the drive onto the port" layout, but sometimes (like right now) it's a bitch.
Ah, a Mac Pro. Sometimes you gotta love their "slide the drive onto the port" layout, but sometimes (like right now) it's a bitch.
Yeah, it's a real love/hate case. Hardware tasks in a Mac Pro fit into two categories: 1) The stuff Apple designed to be easy is ridiculously easy. New hard drive? Easy. More RAM? Trivial. New video card? Hardest part is finding one with OS X drivers. 2) The stuff Apple didn't design to be easy is nearly impossible. Replacing a fan requires unscrewing (but not removing) the RAM cage, removing the CPU cooler cover, unscrewing the fan enclosure, and removing four rubber fasteners (probably by breaking them). And I'm not even sure replacing the PSU is possible.
I overclocked my card a bit and ran a system stability test thing, is 65 C too hot at its maximum? my card has two fans.
I overclocked my card a bit and ran a system stability test thing, is 65 C too hot at its maximum? my card has two fans.
that's really low, you should be able to OC more easily.
fuck guys im shaking right now. so what i did was i tried to get my graphics card to a previous point but then the program crashed so i just stopped it. but then a screen popped up saying that i had to restart for changes to go into effect. so i did but when i restarted everything got fucked up so bad. i cant do anything pretty much because i cant go to the desktop which means i cant do a system reset to a certain point before. can someone tell me how to change graphics cards without going to the desktop. also im running windows 8

Is the "Fractal Design Define R4" a good case? And does it have enough space in it? I currently have a shitty little case in which I can't even organize my cable management.
Why aren't most games core optimised?
My GPU fan doesn't like to run a lot. Like, trying to spin it with my hand it only moves until I stop pushing it. Instantly breaks. How should I oil it? Also, if I let the GPU get hotter (Or well, the fan gets hotter because it tries to run but can't), I can just kickstart it fine. What oil should I use for oiling the fan on my 4650?
Why aren't most games core optimised?
I don't understand that, could you rephrase it and/or elaborate.
If I had to guess, I'd say he's asking why aren't all games multicore optimised.
I don't understand that, could you rephrase it and/or elaborate.
Ok, why don't more games benefit from 6-core CPUs such as the 3930K?
Ok, why don't more games benefit from 6-core CPUs such as the 3930K?
Probably because its not easy and sometimes not possible to make your code that parrallel. Plus CPU's with >4 cores have been a minority in the past several years.
Probably because its not easy and sometimes not possible to make your code that parrallel. Plus CPU's with >4 cores have been a minority in the past several years.
Oh, I was hoping we would see a consumer level 8-core intel CPU this year.
Whenever I leave my laptop on for an extended period of time, it bluescreens after ~an hour or so of no activity. Thing is, it doesn't happen in Windows 8, which I have on a separate partition. is there a way to keep this from happening?
Are all your drivers up to spiff?
Are all your drivers up to spiff?
pretty sure.
pretty sure. "maybe"
*stare
I just bought a new mobo and a SSD, and planning to install Windows 8 on it. However, I'm unsure which approach I should use for installing it, I currently run "Windows 8 Release Preview", I had a legit Windows Vista before, but after a reformat the CDKey stopped working so I had to unlegitinstall it, a while after that I got win8 1. Can I upgrade to "Windows 8 Pro" from the release preview, or do I need my vista? 2. Can I install windows 8 on the SSD when I got the computer running on my old HDD, then just change in boot options the drive to boot with, then format my hdd? 3. How does this all work with the new mobo? Will I be able to start my computer after exchanging it? (I heard the key gets stored on the mobo)
