Too bad my mobo is old enough to not have eSata ports...

BTW, how much for an add-on card for eSata?
PCIe x1 eSATA II - $20

PCI eSATA 150 - $15

You aren't going to get 150 MB/s out of the second card due to the PCI bus having a maximum throughput of 133 MB/s shared with other PCI devices like the sound card. You might get some weird problems from it sucking the bus dry of bandwidth like crackling audio.
I got a 500GB WD MyBook, which has gone too slow the last couple of months for some reason.
It transfers really slow, and it's not caused by fucked up cables or anything, I've checked.
And that's pretty much why I want to take advantage of the eSata connection...

PS: whoever has something to recommend, please go ahead.
Backup all data on the drive and run a full low level format + a full zeroing of the drive.

backing up 480GB of data with such low transfer rates will take months. Seriously... It takes about 10 minutes to transfer 170mb
If there won't be a problem when using eSata, then it's the only option I have...

Or if you buy it from Monoprice, $1.15

EDIT: oh wait that's on back order
My 500GB MyBook has all the slastic shit stripped off so I can swap harddrives with ease just using 1 thumbscrew. I get about 23mb/s transfers, even when I swap out the 5400rpm drive with a 7200rpm seagate... the transfers are still limited to 23mb/s, most likely being the USB-to-SATA controller to blame.
When the 500GB 5400rpm drive is hooked up internally, it gets about 64mb/s via SATA II, where my 7200rpm Seagate gets about 80~mb/s.
It may be worth mentioning that some older notebooks, namely HP Elitebooks, may be problematic when it comes to esata and WD Mybooks.
Never got mine to work properly without stupid workarounds.
edit: The workaround :
- find some normal esata external drive enclosure ( STLabs in my case)
- plug it in
- enjoy the wonderous moment of actually using esata
- plug it out
- now plug in the WD and wonder how come it works ?
It should be noted though that this fix works only once, if the drive enters sleep or if you disconnect it, you won't get it up and running unless you restart the computer and repeat the process.
I don't know why it works, but with my limited understanding of computers, I believe that plugging in the first drive correctly initializes something (controller, driver, ???).

USB isn't causing your strange read problems, there's something wrong with the drive.

What about in Linux? :smug:
What about in Linux? :smug:
The problem is the WD MyBook.
Earlier gen of them were finicky.
What about in Linux? :smug:
I have never manually mounted a drive in Linux, but I would be willing to try. Automatic mounting in Fedora 14 never picked up the drive.
Edit: Added the workaround in my original post.

I did a full error-scan with HD Tune. Here's what I got:

0.2% is damaged. Is this what's causing the problem and is there anything I can do?
Or should I give it to an expert?
Run spinrite on the drive.
the case i was almost going to buy had 2 eSata ports on the front
god knows why you'd need that many, it's the xigmatek UTgard.
uh USB 2 maxes out at 60MB/s

Samsung spinpoint f3.
