How's this for a Z68 motherboard?
MSI Z68MA-G45

It's 105 quid and looks really nice compared to the other boards, plus it has VGA, DVI and HDMI
Okay, so I wanted to build my family a new computer cause we kinda need one. My dad was all ready for me to show him my design, finalize it, and buy it. Well, the Best Buy ads have come out in the Sunday paper. My dad has found a computer that is better than what I'm building for us. It's $700 with a monitor and printer package deal. The specs on it are:
-Phenom II Quad Core @ 3.0 GHz
-1.5 TB HDD @ 5400 RPM
-8GB DDR3 RAM
-Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit
-ATI Radeon HD 4200 integrated graphics
Here's the computer on Best Buy's website.
And this is what I have:

What should I do, Facepunch? Should I tell him to go ahead and buy the one from Best Buy? Or, how can I convince him to let me still do the build, and maybe do a little better on it?
get a cheaper mobo, that'd take $15 off. get rid of the extra ram too, just get 4gb. if you can't explain to your dad why you don't need 8gb, then just go with 6. it's also unfair to put the 5670 in your newegg build and compare it to the best buy build that has the under-powered hd 4200.
i say build it unless you're lazy. you could easily find a printer along with your newegg build that'd beat the best buy computer's price, and you'd be left with a quality built machine.
My new HDD seems to be making a sort of pulsing sound. Like vibrations that fade in and out every 2 seconds. They're continuous no matter where I place the computer and they stop when I disconnect it. My WD 320GB blue caviar doesn't seem to make any noise at all by itself. Should I RMA it while I can and get a better one possibly? Could it be my case (Define R3)?

that sounds like the vibrations are occurring between the hard drive and case. turn your computer off, take the hard drive out of the bay and hold it around the edges, then turn your computer on. if the noise still occurs then replace it under warranty/RMA it

Thanks for the tip. I did something like that. I unplugged the power from my WD 320 and the sound stopped. I think it's from something called "beat" frequency. When the 2 HDDs had similar but opposing vibrations in the case they resonated at a constant frequency (One which annoys me). Now the question is what to do with a perfectly good 320GB HDD?!

It's mATX but it would work.
May I ask why you are using the integrated graphics of a 2500k?
My room gets really hot. With that in mind, is it better to have the PSU mounted:
With the fan on the top?
Or with the fan on the bottom?
I've heard mounted bottom side is better, bit I wonder it's still better it sucking in the luke warm air.
Just to add to the discussion, a lot of experienced builders (Tim/Linus) say that it doesn't matter which way you mount the power supply, temperature wise it's negligible, I prefer fan upwards just becuase it looks better.

Is there something wrong with mATX that would suggest it wouldn't work?
Also I'm using the integrated graphics because they're more than good enough for the few games that I play and I can't yet afford a decent graphics card that can do GPU acceleration in Premiere Pro
[editline]29th August 2011[/editline]
Also on the motherboard specs, it says this:
• 2 PCI Express gen2 x16 slots
- PCI_E1 supports up to PCIE x8 speed
- PCI_E4 supports up to PCIE x8 speed
• 2 PCIE x1 slots
Does that mean I get 2 x8 slots or 1 x16 and 1 x8? Also, can I use a normal graphics card in an x8 slot?
Thanks

When you are using only one of the PCIe slots for a single graphics card it will be running at x16, but when you are running dual cards they will be at x8.

Ah okay, so will two graphics cards be able to run fine if they're on x8?
Also can I use normal PCI stuff in the x1 slots?
Thanks
[editline]29th August 2011[/editline]
Also slightly unrelated, but why is the GTX 285 so damn expensive? It's a couple of hundred quid and it doesn't even match the 460

It will run fine with no noticeable loss in performance. And I don't think its possible to use PCI cards in PCIe x1 slots. You would have to use something like this: http://www.beaglesoft.com/pcie2pci.htm to make it work.
Edit:
Didn't see the price of those adapters until after I posted, what PCI card are you needing to use?

I was just curious, I don't think I'll need to use any PCI cards
Are the ATi 68** series the equivalent of the 57** series? If I do get a refund for my faulty card I want to know what a upgrade would be from a ATi 5850.
No the 68XX are similar in performance to the 58XX, the 68XX right now are the best cards for price:performance though and crossfire amazingly well.
A 6870 is faster than a 5850, about on par if not a little faster due to new drivers and better Dx11 support than a 5870, but for a noticeable upgrade from a 5850
you'd need a 6950/6970/GTX 570 atleast.
One more question. Should I remove the bottom fan mesh on the HAF 912? The mesh looks rather thick and I hear they reduce air flow.. I could make mt own fan mesh from a screen door screen or something.
If you have the fan pointing up on the PSU (looks sexy) then it wouldn't make a huge difference except passive dust getting in, although if you have the fan pointing down definitely leave it in, dust in your power supply is never recommended.
I have a WRT54g2 and whenever he power goes out or gets unplugged will be unstable for days. is there anyway to fix this or should i just get a new one?
So me and my nephew managed to get a keyboard plugged into a 360. We figured out every button except start.
The problem? Consoles for some inexplicable reason require you to press start before actually using the menu.
So my question is WHERE THE FUCK IS START?!

Firefox renders some characters as boxes with numbers in them, what is causing this and how do I fix it? They show up as regular characters in Internet Explorer.

$30 is overpriced for a headset?
And all the reviews I watched and read said that they were very good for the price range.

What are some good CPU heatsinks for overclocking i5 2500k? I'm thinking about the CM 212+ just because of all the positive feedback it's getting (Has to fit in define R3 case). I'm also looking for a few good case fans. Low noise + high CFM. Price isn't really an object as long as it's reasonable.

for this headset yes they're overpriced
they're complete shit and you shouldn't be buying a headset in the first place unless you do phone work or something
Why do I get the feeling my posts are being ignored

Seriously, is that a good upgrade?
[editline]29th August 2011[/editline]
Uhh, hello, another slightly dumb question. I want to upgrade an old ATX formfactor desktop. The purpose of it was to make a computer better than a prebuilt of a similar price. Components:
