Host Clock Override (BCLK) by default is 100. Picture is from bios, not mine though.
I nudged it up to 105.00, booted, and came back to witness the processor now running at 3.8ghz (ASRock Extreme Tuner software).
And if I'm right, the i5-2500k is at 3.3ghz by default. Idle temps also jumped from ~32c to ~40c.
So, does this mean I just successfully overclocked for the first time? Should I overclock more? It also said that 110 value is the maximum for Host Clock Override (BCLK)..
Yes, it's a successful overclock, but you're doing it wrong. You have a 2500k so you should just be putting the multiplier up (CPU Ratio).
Should I keep Avast! Antivirus or switch to MSE?
Should I keep Avast! Antivirus or switch to MSE?
I prefer MSE 100%, it never bothers me unless something's wrong.

bclk stands for base clock or what used to be known as FSB
I suggest you take it back down to default and instead raise the multiplier steadily until it won't go any further, and then start moving the bclk up as far as you can get it while maintaining good temperatures and stability
if you want to go even further you can mess with the voltage

Changing between Avast and MSE wouldn't improve anything no matter which you were starting from so it's not worth changing.
anyone know the recommended specs to run the gta iv icenhancer mod?
anyone know the recommended specs to run the gta iv icenhancer mod?
I run it maxed out with
Phenom II X4 965, 6Gb RAM, and an Radeon 6870
Anyone know why I would be getting pretty nasty screen tearing in some games eg. Metro 2033? My specs i5 2500k 8gb ram RadeonHD 6950 1gb. Running 1280x1024 at 60hz. Its a new pc I just purchased and usually run at 75hz, 60hz is bugging out my eyes I think but cant change it.
This look alright? I know it's only been running a few minutes but regardless...

damn photobucket... it's a 4.2 OC if you couldn't read it.

Ah okay, so the multiplier up (CPU ratio), along with the Host Clock Override (BCLK) or maybe the Host Clock Override isn't even needed?
But the CPU ratio is set Automatic by default.. so I don't know?
Is it worth it to sell this laptop I have? How much would it sell for? It's from around 2008.
Intel Core 2 Duo T8600 2.40 GHz
15.4" screen, 1440x900 native res
4GB DDR2 RAM
320 GB HDD (5400 RPM)
NVIDIA GeForce 9650M GT (1 GB memory)
Windows Vista Home Premium (came with the laptop)
With microphone, camera, and fingerprint reader.
Asus N50Vn-B1B in case anyone cares.

Basically: CPU ratio x BCLK = Clockspeed (40x x 100MHz = 4000MHz / 4GHz)
For SandyBridge it's usually never a good idea to change the BCLK, instead focus on increasing the CPU multiplier. For now I'd recommend putting the BCLK down to 100MHz and depending on your cooling start the CPU multiplier at around 40x (4GHz). If the computer is unstable then increase Vcore by very tiny increments, once stable test with Prime95 (I don't recommend to pass 1.35V if you plan to use your computer often). Repeat and continue until you reach a stable clockspeed you're fine with.

Alright I think I got it now. But I'm gonna give you some values I can find on this ASRock Xtreme Tuner software. (Not OC'ing through that)
SO, I went back to bios, set the Clock Override BCLK back to 100.00, and changed the ratio to 40.
Now after booting, on the software I can see:
CPU Speed: 4000.00 Mhz
CPU Ratio: x 40.0
CPU Temperature: 35-42 celsius
Vcore: 1.088 (didnt change it) when the cpu speed is 4ghz and seems stable.
And apparently the x40.0 ratio of CPU is the maximum allowed ratio, so it jumps between x 16.0 (1600 mhz) to x 40.0 (4000 mhz) so.. you might wanna comment on that?
Personally I think it's all good now. Not concerned about the ratio dropping down x 16.0 at a times because after all I'm running idle now.

Also the cooling of the processor is good. It's a huge metal.. block type deal in there, plus a fan strapped on the side of it. And if the powersupply means anything, it's a good 750w Corsair something good.

What motherboard are you using? Are you using the BIOS to change these settings?
Yes when it comes to overclocking you people convinced me to do it through bios. Maybe i just overcomplicated things by saying how the CPU clock jumps between 1600mhz - 4000mhz. by default the maximum cpu ratio was x 33, which equals a 3.3ghz CPU clock speed, which it is by default.
And the motherboard is ASRock P67 Extreme4.
I'm using Outlook 2010 with my Gmail account. My problem is that it creates an extra data file, and that looks pretty ugly. Is there someway to merge them or remove the default data file?

Only with POP I think. I think when creating it as an IMAP account it gives it its own data file, which you can't change. If you create it as a POP account you can change it I think. Or the other way around.
My brother can't play games well currently, they crash after extended periods or in RO2's case, just crash on certain maps. (Barracks, Red October). He tried to OC his GPU by ramping up the voltage by more than a couple slots, I warned him not to, but he put it back to default after seeing artifacting. His RAM could also be damaged, would a memory leak or something like that cause those kind of issues or is it strictly GPU related?
How do you make your laptop run as cool as possible without turning it off?
So far I can only think of turning my laptop screen off, and having a cooling pad hooked up.
ok, I have a retarded question. A long time back my old laptop had vista. Whilst at university I was given a free copy of windows 7 ultimate and the fella at the IT department said it was 1 pc use only. Now that I'm selling my old laptop I'm going to do a factory restart as I want to sell it, and wipe it clean- which I assume will lose windows 7 and return it to vista.
Is this malarky what I said true and will I be able to use the windows 7 disc again?
Cheers

Yeah what you should do is deactivate it and keep the activation key for the next pc

Ah of course! stupid me! thanks :)
For some reason when I leave my computer idling for a while or put it to sleep and come back to it, CPUZ tells me that the core multiplier is at 16 when I had it up to 42. The core speed is also at 1.6GHz (obviously). When I first boot everything is where it should be but then it drops. Could I have missed some setting in the BIOS?
That's just for power savings, when there's any load it will put the speed back up to desired levels, to test this watch CPU-z and then turn on Prime95 and it'll shoot up to the 42 multiplier again. You can disable it, but there's really no point and it'll just cost most money and consume more energy, as well as making more heat.
The thing is I did run prime95 while watching cpuz and it didn't change. The temps were low too so it's not just cpuz displaying inaccurate numbers.
CPU-Z tells me my CPU multiplier is 6x, when in in the bios it's actually 9x. What gives?
CPU's underclock when not utilized, try give it something to do while checking, Prime95 will work.

Why don't I get a cool quote like that
I don't see you enough to get a cool quote unfortunately, the edgy kids hang in the PC building forum.

I've been using intel burn test, that should more than suffice.
Okay , now CPUz says I have a 9.0 multiplyer. Thank you!
