Microsoft Office Student is on sale at Newegg for $110. Is that worth it, or are they any other new versions around the corner, or are there any better prices?
depends what you mean by 'prices'...
I find owning office is a waste of money, use open/libreoffice and if it's something that requires 100% correct formatting make sure you bring it into school and edit it with Office there.

Also if you're a student you can most likely get a much better deal, if you did want to own it.

I've been in school for a week and I've already made a document (a resume) in Word that could not be opened in LibreOffice. It might be a good thing to have.
I need a new graphics card, I currently have a radeon HD 4600 series card and it doesn't get the job done anymore (like it ever did).
If I buy at the right place a 6770 is in my price range, what are some things I should take into consideration before buying a new graphics card? Also how do I know it will work with my PC?

I swear I replied to that, yes get a 6770 but in the future try and get a better CPU like a second hand Q6600, since you're going to need to replace your entire motherboard and RAM if you want a new one.
Alright, I got a new build, and so far it is amazing. Thank you all for your help!
Is there anything I can use to use my laptop's bluetooth over the LAN as a sort of virtual bluetooth for my desktop?
Okay, CPU temp on speedfan is 10 degrees Celsius higher than both of my core temps. That's odd, it wasn't like this earlier... is this bad?
[editline]9th September 2011[/editline]
It doesn't even make sense, doesn't the CPU temp reflect the core temps?
I love F.lux, but there's something that annoys me about it: it doesn't affect the cursor so it appears slightly blueish during night. Anything that I can do to get the cursor affected too?
My cursor is blue on Windows. Why?
This happens when your videocard displays your cursor in hardware. We're looking into a workaround.
I'm taking a Computer Service and Support class for the first time. In the 2 weeks I've started school I've learned so much and its a lot of work to remember. I am going to push for my certification in spring. I got the highest grade in the class on a skills test to see what we already knew. When everybody else got Cs I had an A.
So this thread is going to come in really handy, sorry for the stupid questions I will ask compared to the legitimate ones already in here but can somebody explain this to me?
Why is Blu-ray so popular among movies and video games when most movies and video games can still spaciously fit on a DVD. Is it because they will run faster and preform better with more space available? That sounds alien to me but thats the only reason I can think of.
I don't think any play station 3 game needs 25-50 GB of space, does it.
I guess, what makes it so special? Is it just the way that it is made that the optical drive of a blu-ray player can produce a clearer image whereas a DVD can't?

I think Blu Ray DVDs aren't as compressed and encoded as the 2-4GB files you... buy... because blu ray players can handle the massive detail whereas it's not feasible to... buy... a 30GB file
perhaps
Standard DVDs hold a maximum of 8 GB I think (and that's dual layer), blu ray hold far more, 25 GB on a single layer, and 50 on a dual layer disc (and more on others I guess?). The extra space allows you to put higher quality (and simply more) video and audio.
Blu ray video is at 1920 x 1080p / 24 fps (there's other formats too, lets just stick to this one),
while DVDs are 720 × 576i (which is actually interlaced, effectively cutting the vertical resolution in half) / 25 fps
As for games, it just allows more room for textures, sound, models, whatever else. It's not really needed for today's games, although it can provide higher audio quality I guess.
Metal gear solid 4 on Ps3 fills the 50gb blu-ray but only due to the mass amount of cutscenes and it has uncompressed audio which audiophiles swear by.
You can still fit quite a decent quality 720p or 1080p film on a standard 4.7gb DVD with room to spare too, blu-ray just offers more space for less compression and whatnot.
I'm looking for a new mouse. I got one with my new computer, but it's wireless and tends to go offline sometimes.
I want a wired one, no battery bullshit. Price or "gaming gadgets" does not matter. I just want a good mouse.
well yah okay but it just seems to me that 50gb is way too much for any videos today. When you look at a BD disc on a computer does it show the entire thing filled? I can't imagine even the best quality audio and video taking up 50gb of space.
Also, why are rewritable blu-ray discs called BD-RE when the equivalent in DVDs and CDs is RW? I don't think my notes explained that.
also, I'm taking the Cisco Academy course. Just took 11 pages of notes on the first chapter. I feel like I'm catching on pretty quick.
that sounds like overkill but I'm determined to pass my certification. My teacher said in the past 10 years only 3 or 4 kids have passed it for her.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is 21 GB ripped from a Bluray Disc, the extras are 21.6 GB
I suppose they're simply trying to get as close to uncompressed video and audio as possible, which takes up a massive amount of space (anywhere from 5 MB to 25 MB for a single frame)
Okay, I guess I just have to get my head wrapped around uncompressed media. I'm just so used to seeing movies around 1 or 2 gb. I had no idea that uncompressed was so much bigger. Thank you guys.

MX518 or G400 is the ones I would recommend. With the later being an upgrade of the former.

well even the most compressed Bluray rips are around 8-10 GB
going by lets say, an average of 12.5 MB per frame for an uncompressed Deathly Hallows render it would total at
02:26:05 = 8765 seconds
8765 * 24 FPS = 210,360 frames
24 * 12.5 MB = 300 MB/s
210,360 * 12.5 MB = 2.5 TB
that's without audio & extras, and if you were to use some form of frame interpolation software to get smoother playback (haha) on say, a 120 Hz monitor you would need a massive 1.46 GB/s bandwidth

Pretty much can't go wrong with Logitech.
wow thats pretty crazy. The fact that a frame is pretty much just a picture flew over my head. Some pictures I take with my crappy camera are a good amount of MBs. I don't know why I didn't just connect that sooner.
Thanks for the clarification and information!

I recently got a new build and am installing all of my games on it, and for some reason the Metro 2033 download keeps pausing itself. It's not a problem with my internet connection as I can still browse the internet and I have successfully downloaded several other games from Steam. Does anybody know what could be causing this and how I could fix it?

Try restarting Steam.

well yes, but DVD movies are pretty bad quality
My friend's computer's sound system doesn't work at all. If we play music, we won't hear anything. If we go into the recording devices, the volume level indicator goes along with the music. How do we fix this?

Because that's how bad his computer is.
