Noob question that me and someone else are shooting the shit about: in 3D models, why polygons? My line of thinking, correct me if I'm wrong, is that by using spherical/non-euclidean triangles instead you could have astronomically more detail in your models with very little extra data required to store and render. (All the same data as a regular polygon with the addition of how much the triangle's point curve away from the centre) As in, make everything out of these: (but in equilateral form) Of course it would require a complete rethink of how graphics hardware and software works but wouldn't it make sense
Will Ogg/Vorbis/Theora ever be standardized (replace mp3 globally)?
Will Ogg/Vorbis/Theora ever be standardized (replace mp3 globally)?
People will still use mp3 for everything since they're used to it and it's doesn't make too much of a difference when they change.

I can't open the steam store tab, or steam in my browser, I get the error message 118. I've looked around the steam forums and many other people have this error, but there seems to be no fix. Can anyone help?
I think it's producing the truly curved surface that hardware just can't do at the moment
Oh it's entirely possible, but it wouldn't be render by points in a cloud or vertices in a polygon. How it would work is it uses some overly-complex algorithm to determine the surface of an object as if it was a surface and not a bunch of points in space, similar to how a fractal's algorithm determines the "outline" of whatever object it displays. The major downside to this is that it would require MASSIVE computing power, not "very little". Stuff like this can push a PC to it's limits (if iterated a high number of times) and it's only 2 dimensional.
My problem is that I can't find any free downloads. Thank you for that though.
Yeah, that's called warez, and you usually get banned for it. That's why nobody's giving you a link to it.
My CPU is constantly at 60% usage, even though i'm doing nothing. My temps are normal, I JUST formatted and reinstalled windows. What could it be? I'm getting 1/3rd the FPS I should be getting in games as well.
Well I've been looking into a headset, and are the 5.1 surround worth more than the "standard" ones? I was looking at this one http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/pc-gaming-headsets/ear-force-z6a.aspx and I'm wondering if I need a sound card too get the most out of the headset. My MD is a MSI P67A-GD55, and I'm not too sure if it supports 5.1 surround.
5.1 is a gimmick http://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-AD700-Open-air-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B000CMS0XU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1316964233&sr=8-2 or http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-ATH-A700-Audio-Technica-Headphones/dp/B000E9VKUQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1316964233&sr=8-1
Notice my 6950 is getting loud while loaded. I was thinking about applying thermal paste. Can I use the one that came with my Hyper 212+.
Reposting because of new page
Reposting because of new page
The 6950 is a loud card.
-snip-
The 6950 is a loud card.
So replying paste won't lower temperature?
Would it be possible for a program to download a file from the internet directly to the RAM?
You'd have to create a ramdisk, but that's still volatile
So replying paste won't lower temperature?
If anything it may raise it, they use quality paste when applying their own/reference heatsinks.
I can't open the steam store tab, or steam in my browser, I get the error message 118. I've looked around the steam forums and many other people have this error, but there seems to be no fix. Can anyone help?
I have this problem too :(
If anything it may lower it, they use quality paste when applying their own/reference heatsinks.
You mean raise it?
You mean raise it?
That I did, sleepy time for me.
If anything it may raise it, they use quality paste when applying their own/reference heatsinks.
So the best option is a aftermarket cooler?

Can I force AA in GTA IV?
I'm still looking for an external DAC + AMP + Gaming sound card that is 1394 or USB I got nothin.
Fiio E7. I have one and can testify to its awesomeness. My MD is a MSI P67A-GD55, and I'm not too sure if it supports 5.1 surround.
I have a Turtle Beach HPA2, and while multiple channels is definitely advantageous in directionally tracking sounds (like sound-whoring in CoD4), the surround sound ability is not worth the reduction in sound quality resulting from cramming multiple smaller low-quality drivers as opposed to a single larger higher-quality driver in each earcup. Instead of buying that Turtle Beach headset, buy an audiophile-grade headset that will far outperform that Turtle Beach crap in gaming and be many, many times better for music than anything you've[sp]probably[/sp]ever listened to. The ATH-AD700 and HD555 are headphones to look out for, but do some research before you buy anything.
Dumb Question but I am upgrading to 32GB of RAM for my job/school does ECC work in non ecc mobos, I would assume so as it just wouldn't address the 9th bit but thought I would ask before I purchaced $300 of ram?

lol dude you're not a consultant, don't glorify your job [editline]26th September 2011[/editline] for an 'engineer' consultant that's a bit of a daft question it depends on the socket/controller I've had problems with LGA 1207 or 939 opterons / anything with a built in memory controller dunno why you'd need 32gb on a desktop machine if you weren't doing ridiculous av processing etc, unless you're building a vm host team etc why don't you just look at the socket/mobo tech specs (engineers do this)

Making a network multiple DC's, Lync, Exchange, IDS, squid, Vcenter, fully redundant w/ HA and DRS, SAN enviroment and a whole bunch of other shit. it adds up fast, do I need to screen cap a few things for you?
don't make me bring out my irc logs you shouldn't be asking a kid's forum tech questions they can't answer especially if you put yourself in the title of 'consultant' (ergo professional)
don't make me bring out my irc logs you shouldn't be asking a kid's forum tech questions they can't answer especially if you put yourself in the title of 'consultant' (ergo professional)
Oh heavens me I have angered the forum god! save me... Sorry I usually audit networks, consult them on what needs to be done, and make a solution should they choose to go with what I have to say. If that isn't consulting I don't know what is
you haven't angered anyone i work in the industry too i just don't believe shit you say cause I recall myself and half a dozen others caught you out bullshitting on irc sessions few years back
