Did you try starting another test immediately? The powerboost usually wears off pretty fast for me.
Is there anything I can do to get more out of my harddrive? Like when I playback FRAPS files my hard drive tends to stutter in some parts and I have to pause the video to let it catch up.
Overclock the spindle speed, I have mine set to 13,000 from the 7,200 default, almost as fast as an SSD!

I'll be buying a laptop for my upcoming freshmen year of college and I'm a big desktop guy, but not as familiar with laptop brands. According to a chart I googled, aside from Apple, the top three are Lenovo, HP, and Sony, in that order. Anyone have first hand experiences with these brands?

Lenovo Ideapad is great, I have an hp but it gets hot like a moffucka. It really depends on how much you are spending though.

So guys I have a quick question regarding what CPU I should buy. I would like to get an Ivy Bridge when they are released, but do not want to wait that long to get my computer upgraded.
I have chosen this motherboard as what I will be getting;
BAM!
I want this one because it has native support for PCIe 3.0 and is a pretty decent board overall for the price.
Now, i want to get an i5 2500k but I am not sure if it is worth spending that much money for a processor that will only be used for about a year.
What are your thoughts, facepunch?
EDIT; I am also considering this mobo. $25 cheaper and almost the same

I have a compaq cq60 which dual boots ubuntu 11.04 and windows vista.
Windows vista is currently broken and system recovery doesn't work. But i have a HP desktop which can make windows 7 recovery CDs. Will a windows 7 HP recovery CD work for compaq?

I would guess that it should. I mean, if you are making the recovery CDs there is no reason I can think of that it wouldn't work. Should probably wait to see what someone else says though.
I meant that I plan to upgrade to ivy bridge when released so as to get support for PCIe 3.0 and the new AMD 7 series.

Don't forget the fact the HP and compaq is pretty much the same.
I've also seen people install vista on a HP via a dell recovery disk.

you don't need PCI-E 3 for new GPUs, they are backwards compatible and they absolutely will not use all the bandwidth in PCI-E 2.1, GTX 480's are hardly bottlenecked by even PCI-E 2 with 4 lanes.

Really? Should I even bother with PCIe 3 then? I really like the z68 motherboard series.

It's a good motherboard, and the i5 2500k will be plenty powerful for years to come, I don't see full PCI-E 2.1 x16 bandwidth being needed for quite a bit. Videocards will need to be like 4x more powerful before that happens. The benefit from PCI-E 3 is less lanes won't bottleneck cards, so you could do like triple SLI 580s (if they were pci-e 3.0) with 3 x4 lanes and not bottleneck the card, for now it's basically a bigger number to sell a product.

Good. Thanks for the help!
Can anyone suggest a good desktop microphone?
Budget is around $60 pretty flexible though.

Aus prices suck, normally I'd say a Samson Go Mic, but the prices are so inflated there that they're like $100.

I'll look it up, sometimes its possible to find things at lower prices from overseas.

Just curious how much are they over there?

$40, but I'd recommend getting a mic stand for it as well.
You're right the lowest Australian price I can find is $79.
I'll keep looking though it looks like a great mic.

Yeah well I cant find anything which is unfortunate, any other suggestions?
So i need to upgrade my GPU. my 5850 is dieing, the fan makes an irritating grinding noise and it idles at 75c and yea its fully cleaned out and everything as well as the case, but that is beyond the point.
I've been looking at the 6950, 6970 and even the gtx 560i and 570
From the performance reviews it almost looks like my 5850 is on par with the 6950, maybe the 6950 pulling out just a bit higher. my resolution is 1920x1200 so i could see where the 6950 and 6970 would come to an advantage with the 2gb memory. so here's my question, should i go with the cheaper 6950 or penny up for the 6970 which seems to have a greater improvement from what i've seen so far in reviews. Im not afraid to step into the Nvida realm but i dont have quite as much knowledge on their current line of cards.

What are the basics I need to know for building a PC?
All the components, I have no idea what to look for at all

Generally it's not that difficult, more matching up part numbers. For example, an i5 will need a socket LGA 1155/1556 compatible motherboard which is clearly listed. The only reason it's difficult is knowing what exactly to look for. You could post your budget in a new thread and the people over at PC building would be more than happy to help.
Now, I have a question of my own. Is it really suggested get a sound card? Even the best gaming builds I've seen had integrated sound.

What site? I'd like to look. There's really a huge gap in microphones, there's either cheap $10-$20 ones or good USB ones at $50~ and then above that there's real condenser microphones that require phantom power and stuff.

5850 = 6850, sometimes the 6850 performs better, sometimes the 5850. It depends on the game and the resolution and stuff. A 6950 is considerably better, if you went with nVidia, for the same price as a 6950 you'd be getting a GTX 560 TI, the 6970 equiv would be a gtx 570
Is it really suggested get a sound card? Even the best gaming builds I've seen had integrated sound.
Generally speaking, no. Most of the time your audio output isn't going to be high quality enough to need a sound card, and then most of the time again most people are just happy with decent speakers as opposed to higher equipment.
