Thinking about installing ubuntu as my main OS, and trying to get my dad to use it aswell, any recommendations on using liux? (programs, configurations etc..?)
Depends on the computer you are installing it on. If its not fast, then ubuntu will run alright, but if it's fast and you have seven then there's no reason to switch. The lack of apps is enough to be a turn off. seven may be a tad slower but ubuntu is hardly supported. :/
6970 is a very strong card, you will be very happy with it. If you're looking for 60fps, you can probably play most modern games on it at 1080p while on max with little AA or high with AA. But it's a very good card.
Well I'm using a 2006 macbook pro right now so I think I'll be seeing a big improvement :v: Thank you guys though
I'm recording videos at half 1680*1050 (840*525) What would be the best render settings in vegas?
I'm going on a road trip and I'd like to work a on a software project, but my laptop's battery has gone kaput. My best option would be to use my mom's macbook pro, but the problem it's completely locked down by administrator rights because it actually belongs to the university she works at. So, I was wondering how risky it would be to shrink the mac partition with third party bootable software. Also, can you recommend anything? I'm looking at this "Ultimate Boot CD" right now, will that work?
I just replaced a jammed IDE CD/DVD drive with another IDE one but it only reads CDs. I know the cables are connected correctly and are not loose, so what is the problem? If it helps, the drive I just put in is a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D.
Try opening the drive and blowing the dust out.
Is i5 2500k stock settings with hyper 212 evo normal at 32C on idle and 50C under 100% load?
because it actually belongs to the university she works at.
It's probably not a good idea to mess with it since it's owned by someone else. With that said, the simplest (and safest) route would be to follow this to reset the admin password if you don't have the installation disc. If you have the disc though, this is the official way to reset an admin password. What third party programs are you think of? The last time I tried to resize my partition in a program like GParted it wouldn't because it was HFS+, although that was a long time ago.
My friend which have not very much computer-parts knowledge wants me to tell him what he should buy. I want to know your opinion on two things: (It is a gaming computer) 4 Gb of RAM with 1666Mhz or 6 Gb with 1333Mhz? Edit: They are both Quadcore. Intel i7 3.3Ghz or Intel i5 3.3Ghz? I think the i5 is the best choice for him - he does not have unlimited money and he is mostly using the computer as a gaming PC. Thanks!
Will a psu with 520w of continuous power be enough to run two 460 gtx's and an i5 2500k? According to a power supply calculator it should be but I'm looking for a 2nd opinion.

Some of them don't deliver anywhere near their advertised power levels.
Is i5 2500k stock settings with hyper 212 evo normal at 32C on idle and 50C under 100% load?
Well I get up to only 55-60c on mine @ 4.5ghz with the same cooler on max load, so in comparison to that I guess they should be lower. What are your voltages set at? But they aren't bad temps you have at all, but why not overclock if you have a Hyper 212 + a 2500k?
Can anyone recommend me a 64GB SSD (preferably with TRIM support)
I've had a OCZ Vertex II 60GB for over a year and it has TRIM support. It was the shit back in the day.
Is there any possible way I could get my hdd with windows already installed from another pc, working with my new pc when I set it up? I've been hearing that it's not possible. I guess it's no big deal because I have a second hdd that I can install it to and copy it all over, but it'd be so convenient to just use what I have.
You can. Your new computer will run off a drive that already has windows installed on it.
You can. Your new computer will run off a drive that already has windows installed on it.
You sure? I read that switching to entirely new components won't allow it to boot.
One way to find out.
One way to find out.
Very true, haha. Thanks.
It'll boot but Windows will probably want a new key. I think Windows can detect a new motherboard or something a long that line.
It'll boot but Windows will probably want a new key. I think Windows can detect a new motherboard or something a long that line.
Shouldn't have to. When I changed my motherboard it never asked for a new key.

How should top fans on a HAF 912 be mounted? Like underneath the top cage, or on top of it?

I tried putting it at 4.0ghz with 1.140 volts but my computer blue screens. Can you guys tell me a guide for a begginer overclocking?
I want to build a server in the price range of 300-400 dollars, hoping to be able to run two or so game servers and a small website. A. Is this practical? B. What parts should I really go all-out on so I can upgrade easier in the future? C. Is an expensive case important?
Google has failed me as far as troubleshooting the new PSU in my rig. I just installed the Corsair GS600, and it doesn't start the computer up. The power LED might flash but it doesn't stay.
Here is the board you showed:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157271 but why not this:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157265
rebump
I've been getting a LOT of those "display driver has stopped working and has recovered" error screens where the whole system locks up for around 30 seconds. It started happening yesterday and now I can barely open any application without it locking up. I have the most recent drivers, and I have a nvidia geforce 550. Oh, and it doesn't always pop up with the error message. Most of the time it will just lock up completely for a couple seconds, but that's been happening very frequently. Like, 5 times a minute.
Worth it to spend 70usd on a second GTX260 to get an SLI setup?
I'm on a Core 2 Duo system and am waiting Ivy Bridge as my next upgrade, when that happens PCI-E 3.0 should be the standard on most new Panther Point chipsets. Is PCI-E 3.0 going to be a gimmick or is it something that will very beneficial for future proofing? I'm hoping to get an mATX board.
