You'll probably need a screwdriver. Try not to build with animals around. Be careful with the pins on the CPU and use the standoffs for the motherboard when you put it in the case. Apart from that it's just putting things in slots.
Can anyone me know list of what need to do if I get a SSD for Christmas? I know there's a lot of settings you need to disabled and change to get better performance and a longer life out of it.
Enable AHCI mode in your bios if it isn't already and then re-install Windows on to the SSD. Once Windows is installed move all the temp folders over to your HDD through the Window's Global Variable window thing. That's it really.

And don't forget to update the firmware once you get it as it might have older firmware on it. Just visit the vendor website and I'm sure you'll find links.
Er, I can never figure out the whole ATi card thing. Until I get my GTX 560ti, two of my friends are willing to let me borrow one of their spare cards. One has a 4850 and one has a 5670. I can't for the life of me figure out which is better. And I know just because one came out later doesn't mean it's better.
The 4850 is better because the #850 part is high end, while the #670 on the 5670 is mid range.
The first number is just the generation which doesn't really mean that much, it's the last 3 digits you need to look out for.
I have a 5770 which is considered okay for gaming but it's more mid range.
Okay, thanks a lot dude.
I should be getting my motherboard today so I'll be putting it together soon. I have to thank all you guys for all the help and recommendations. And saving me from almost buying a bomb.(actually turns out my friend bought that rosewill psu I was going to get, earlier this year and it JUST burned out on him.)
Quick question, I'm ordering the parts for my new build in the next few days, how do I actually assemble the computer? What tools do I need? Is there any process that I follow, or anything I should avoid doing?
I just built my first PC this sunday, and it was surprsingly uncomplicated.
Just keep all your parts organized (mine were lying all over the place) so you're not hunting for screws, make sure to ground yourself before touching any sensitive parts (motherboard, GPU, etc)
You'll need a phillips screwdriver. Really, it's just putting stuff into its slots and connecting shit to other shit. I don't really know the best order for putting stuff together, but if I were you I'd connect everything to the motherboard first and put in the power supply last because it has sixty trillion wires that get in the way of absolutely everything
My friend which have not very much computer-parts knowledge wants me to tell him what he should buy. I want to know your opinion on two things: (It is a gaming computer)
4 Gb of RAM with 1666Mhz or 6 Gb with 1333Mhz? Edit: They are both Quadcore.
Intel i7 3.3Ghz or Intel i5 3.3Ghz?
I think the i5 is the best choice for him - he does not have unlimited money and he is mostly using the computer as a gaming PC. Thanks!
Please. I want answer. Also: Is the GT 540M GPU good enough to play CS:GO on? :P
Sorry for re-posting!

Definitely i5. And I'd think 4gb 1666.
As for the mobile card, I'd imagine GO is on Source so it should run fine.

Thanks. Some more RAM talk; I have 2x2Gb of RAM, but I am a developer (I use a lot of programs, like Eclipse, Virtual machine an shit an shit). Do you think that I should buy another set to 2x2Gb and add it, or should I buy a new set of 2x4 Gig? Ive heard that having many RAM cards is not preferable, so?

The amount of ram modules doesn't have any affect until you're overclocking high or something.
If you need the ram, you need the ram, the issues regarding having "too many" modules won't apply in many places.

Okay. Ill buy a 2x2 or a 1x4 set to christmas then :P Thanks a lot Brt5470!

That's because they changed the naming scheme from the 5-6 generation. Making the 6 generation 1 digit higher after the leading series identifier.
My guess as why they would do that is because of the switch from ati to amd. Not entirely positive about that tidbit though.
Actually, the 5770 and the 6770 are the same card. The 6770 is a rebranded 5770 with some tomfoolery with dvd decoding or something added and no other differences.
How about this? http://www.lightworksbeta.com/
Lightworks confuses the fuck out of me, being used to Vegas and AAE.
I picked up a set of speakers at an estate sale, they're nothing amazing but I'd been needing some and they were pretty cheap. They're Sony SS-H501's, link to service manual (pdf). I just wired them to female RCA, and am using a 3.5mm male to RCA male to connect them to my laptop. The bass is a little staticcy at times but otherwise sound fine. Before I take the time to solder everything together I just want to make sure:
Do they need external power or are they just kind of blown? Do the wires need to all be the same gauge?
Uh, your recommended guide (with a new installation of windows) and the guide you don't really recommend link to the same thread...
oops my bad, updated my post with the correct link. This is the one you should follow before a new installation of Windows:

Is this gpu any good? I'm thinking about getting it to replace my 5770.
And does anyone know the a good sata III 60/64 gb ssd for around 100$

Here's my current pc. The cpu is at 3.6 ghz

fixed the single channel ram, had to move some to another slot
This SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167042 says under features "Data Set Management Command Trim attribute" this sounds like it supports TRIM, is this true? Is this also a good SSD compared to the Crucial M4?

Get the M4.
wow ok then
even though the intel has better write speeds
[editline]12th December 2011[/editline]
and trim support
Does speccy sometimes have issues figuring out what kind of memory you have?

every ssd that's worth buying supports trim, and read/write specs aren't ever accurate
the m4 doesn't afaik
yes it does
the SATA III ocz octane seems to be the best choice if you're going with 120/8GB
whoa cool thanks reapaninja
Do wireless mice (low end $30-40 ones) have very noticeable input lag?
It'd be nice to keep my desk wire-free as possible once I get my wireless keyboard, I do play games often but not in much of a serious way that I'd care if my mouse was making me 10% worse.
But is the input lag noticeable in a way that would put me off/annoy me frequently? I can imagine it feeling like I have a small bit of mouse smoothing.
And an addon question, would a 2.4ghz wireless keyboard reciever, a 2.4ghz wireless mouse reciever and my 2.4ghz router conflict in anyway?
Planning on going on this or this (because sexy and future laptop use).

They need to sell wireless mouses powered by a special mousepad, that would be awesome.
I've gamed with wireless mouses and I never had a problem except for when they get low on batteries. Haven't really noticed any input lag, but then again my monitors probably like 10ms.
Fantastic, a little input lag wouldn't bother me but over the years people have been describing wireless mice as if they have a 3 second delay, I'm tempted to go for the Arc just because it's very nice looking, but no middleclick and "touch" controls might just piss me off.
I'm thinking about getting a Crucial M4 64GB SSD for my mom's new computer. She is currently only using like 24GB with Windows XP and Office installed should I go for the SSD or should I get a regular hard drive?
The only reason I considered an SSD is the price isn't that much more then a hard drives price now
Get an SSD, best general upgrade for a computer (and laptop) you can get at the minute, not to mention the added benefits of heat, power and sound when it's in a laptop, and now that HDD prices have raised dramatically due to the floods there's no reason not to.
Could also get a 32gb if she only browses and things, I got a 32gb for my parent's laptop and they've not even nearly filled it yet.
