oops wrong thread [editline]20th May 2011[/editline] Still looking for entry level jobs in tech support / IT stuff similar to GeekSquad or possibly a helpdesk type situation - I'm attending college so I don't yet have a degree.
got that post wrong, I want ubuntu running alongside windows 7, already tried on a virtual machine and I liked it, although my dad will install it as the main OS, because he wants to upgrade his computer but he's tired of Windows XP, and doesn't want to buy an OS. My question is: should I make an ext3 partition or make an unformatted partition so that the ubuntu installer formats it as it needs?
Don't make any partitions. Boot up the live cd, select the try before you install option, hit the install ubuntu icon, and select install alongside windows. It's REALY well done. Don't use wubi though. Just... just don't, ok? Oh, and as for your dad, do the same thing, but select replace windows instead. To clarify, the ubuntu installer uses libparted to shrink your ntfs(windows) partition (by default your entire hdd) without harming its contents. Your C drive will appear to shrink in windows.
dumb question but I have stopped keeping my eye on the hardware world after nvidia8800 was released, but now an opportunity has arose for me to get a computer. What would be todays mediocre gaming computer, that can handle games reasonably? edit I found this setup: Core i5 2300, 2,8 Ghz, 8 / 1 TB SATA3 / 8 Gb DDR3 1333Mhz/ 1 TB SATA3/ Radeon 6870 1GB DDR5 and according to some benchmarks it is really fine.
What's the cost?

You might want to make a thread in the PC building section
I have the chance to buy two GTX470's for 200 euro's (280~ dollar) But I don't have an SLI capable mobo, What should I do?
I have the chance to buy two GTX470's for 200 euro's (280~ dollar) But I don't have an SLI capable mobo, What should I do?
For that deal? Buy an sli capable mobo.
For that deal? Buy an sli capable mobo.
Yeah but the thing is, I've got a E6850 and I want to upgrade to i7 for a long time now. So if i replace the mobo I would be pants on head retarded for buying a SLI mobo with socket 775. So i'd have to also buy a new CPU. But I don't want to spend that much money you see.
Is anyone here who owns an original DELL XPS 730 (or 730x) PC? I'd like to know a few things about a couple certain registry entries. Pls PM me or reply here. Thanks.
I was looking at some Scythe fans and found these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835185091&cm_re=Scythe-_-35-185-091-_-Product (they're cheaper at a local place), these worth getting if I'm trying to lower my fan noise? My case has four of these (all stock and came installed in the case, three 120mm and one 140mm) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835146002 and two of these on my Hyper 212+ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103078 Should I get six of these to replace all my fans or just the the four case fans?
My net is going slow. We have bought a 2 Mb/s line, and thats what I get on speedtest.net. But when playing games I get around 250 ping EVERY server, we think theres a bush in the way for the antenna. What are your thoughts? PS: Yes, we've restarted the router.

Yeah, it won't ever be much better than that.
I have some questions regarding the Sapphire HD5850 Xtreme, according to benchmarks it runs fantastic, even for it's price (120 EUR). Can anyone confirm this? Also, would a XFX Pro 450W be sufficient to power it? AMD suggests 500w PSUs, but would I be fine with this one? Would a HD5850 Xtreme be sufficient to max games at 1440x900?

need a new keyboard, had a g11, want something of that caliber, can anyone help?
Can I use a W7 Ultimate OA product key for W7 Home Premium?
need a new keyboard, had a g11, want something of that caliber, can anyone help?
G15? I heard a lot of good things about it
Just right click on computer and click properties. In the bottom you should find something about reactivating Windows 7 (I guess you installed it one too many times), just call the number and do what the voice says, and you should be running good.
Just re-entered the CD key. Everyone works now
Just re-entered the CD key. Everyone works now
I think my hard drive is failing, it freezes randomly on windows boot screen / desktop. Is there any way to preserve the drive so I can get some data off of it? (I am now running on a separate drive)

(I am now running on a separate drive)
Simply do not use it until you have the means to take all important data off in one go, don't un-needingly move or knock it.

If I were to make a Windows 7 32bit VM and tried running Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth 1/2/2exp would they work(apparently they wont run on 64bit os), and would I get decent fps with my specs. Would it also be possible to get these games to run on a version of linux maybe? Intel Core i7-870 2xGTX 570 in sli 4gb of G.Skill ram Asus mobo, Silverstone PSU. In no way am I trying to show off, I have never really used a VM for anything more then trying it out.

Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth 2 actually worked fine without for me when I put it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit the other week, but the resolutions were kind of weird.
Hm, do you mind linking me to those unofficial patches? BFME2 just hangs on the splash screen for me(creates a dump file).
Hm, do you mind linking me to those unofficial patches? BFME2 just hangs on the splash screen for me(creates a dump file).
Yeah, give me a bit to find it. [editline]20th May 2011[/editline] My bad, it wasn't a patch (I was probably thinking of another game) but it was a quick fix by editing a file. Here's the link, http://www.sevenforums.com/gaming/32359-lotr-battle-middle-earth-2-a.html#post374147
Hard drives, is it possible to have a 2tb FAT32 drive? My sister bought a DVD player that supports USB input but it turns out it doesn't like NTFS (Which her External HDD uses)
2TB is the limit for HDD in FAT32 apparently, so yes. Just remember files over ~4GB in size won't copy over to it. Are you sure it just doesn't like NTFS? Maybe it's just too large for it to recognize it.
Ah good, and yes, the largest file she has on here is 1.25 Gigs The manual says it only works with Fat16/32, trying to use it gives me "Device not support" What'd be the best way to reformat this thing? Just use the Windows one? [editline]21st May 2011[/editline] Obviously not since it only lets me choose NTFS or exfat
Try exFat just to see, if it doesn't work get a partition software, I think? [editline]21st May 2011[/editline] How do I get Windows 7 to do the whole new PC stuff as if it were being started it for the first time (I'm selling my PC but want to preinstall drivers, flash, java, and some other useful programs)? Like it asks you for the PC name and new account name and such. [editline]21st May 2011[/editline] I really need to know how to do the first boot wizard thing, googling this is hard and I'm not getting anywhere.
