The standard may be DDR3 but DDR2 RAM is still decent enough to fit with today's gaming demands.
In the next two years, DDR3 may become an absolute necessity.
He also may not even need a new motherboard. It's socket 775, which means there's plenty of room for potential CPU expansion---unless he's interested in Core i5/i7 processors.

yeah he should definitely spend $300 just to get the only semi-decent CPU on socket 775, which is massively behind current gen CPUs in pretty much every possible way
there's absolutely no reason whatsoever to stick to 775, and if he doesn't upgrade to a new socket he's only going to get further and further behind
DDR3 is an absolute necessity because you can't buy a new CPU at today's performance level without buying DDR3 RAM
Fairly certain my lovely Spinpoint F3 died today, anyone recommend a good harddisc diagnostic tool? I'm using the one in W7 atm, and after about 10 secs of checking it'll stop, maybe beep. I'm assuming its highlighting an error, but its not giving me any hints apart from the fact it stops and beeps once.
I'm having an issue with opera and facepunch.
I changed my password since the Lulzsec thing and ever since, opera doesn't keep the password when I leave facepunch and come back.

What's a good media player/skin for one to use in a small window? (400x300 or so)
You can just resize things, sure, but for example if I resize WMP to that small I can't see the song name or anything.

You can try foobar2000. It has a heavily customizable UI, you could mess around with it to fit what you need, probably.
My flash drive has stopped being registered when I plug it into my PC. Is there any way at all that I can salvage the data stored on it, or get it to register again?

Thanks.
It turned out that I had two cookies for login, so I just cleared them both and now it seems to be working.

That's pretty nice, let's me control everything from a tiny window and see the playlist/song name and everything.
Thanks! :buddy:
I just got a Kinect sensor for my nephew, but while he is gone, I want to try to use it on my PC, where can I get drivers, etc.?
OS is Windows 7 x64
I've tried installing the SDK for it, but it fails to install.

Hirens Boot Cd has a couple of decent Harddisk checks (including my favorite hitachi hard drive fitness test.)
Ok slightly silly question here: if I have a SATA power cable with several connectors on it, can I power a SATA device with each connector?
pic related http://static.scan.co.uk/images/products/1195605-a.jpg
Yes.
I got a BSOD with and error along the lines off "A process or thread crucial to system operation has terminated"
0x000000f4 (loadsa numbers)
I got these a few times this week, what is causing them and how do I fix it?
Still looking for a mid quality desktop mic - I've found these two so far:
http://www.amazon.com/CAD-U1-Dynamic-Recording-Microphone/dp/B000ULQTE0/ref=pd_rhf_p_t_4
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001AIQGUO/sr=1-2/qid=1309452391/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1309452391&sr=1-2&seller=
I'd like a mic + stand powerd by USB (or maybe battery powered + 3.5mm?) for under ~$40 total unless it has got some really nice features.
I can use Amazon and Newegg, maybe others if it's a great deal.

This is for voice, often with lots of background noise. (AC is loud, I ave a aquarium behind me and you can hear the water trickling)

I have this: http://www.amazon.com/Samson-Mic-Compact-USB-Microphone/dp/B001R76D42/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1309453595&sr=1-1
And it is AMAZING. It has a switch on it, which basically eliminates all the background noise.

Looks great, I will definitely consider it. It's a little expensive, though.
[editline]30th June 2011[/editline]
$50.70 after shipping. Eh, it's a bit much and it doesn't even come with a (proper) stand, I'm sure it's great, though... hm

Its stand is made out of metal and it's quite heavy, so I would call it a proper stand. It's definitely worth the money.

blegh ordering it, then, I'll buy a desktop stand later. IT BETTER BE GOOD! It arrives tomorrow.
Hah! I lied. It sucks!
...
Nah, you won't regret buying it.

Try reinstalling drivers and such, too, if you haven't already.
Hi, I'm building a PC; I have a few parts already but I haven't bought an optical drive yet, I was wondering if I could just use the one in my current PC.
Could I do that?
Would there be any issues with compatibility or anything like that?
It depends on if the drive is SATA or IDE. If it's IDE you need to make sure your board supports IDE.
How do I check?
This is from Speccy.
hp DVD A DH16AAL SCSI CdRom Device
Media Type DVD Writer
Name hp DVD A DH16AAL SCSI CdRom Device
Availability Running/Full Power
Capabilities Random Access, Supports Writing, Supports Removable Media
Config Manager Error Code Device is working properly
Config Manager User Config FALSE
Drive E:
DriveIntegrity FALSE
Media Loaded TRUE
SCSI Bus 1
SCSI Logical Unit 0
SCSI Port 0
SCSI Target Id 1
Status OK
Transfer Rate 12255 KB/S
I haven't seen a board that doesn't have IDE - you'll be find either way, it appears to be SATA though, after googling the model number.

if you haven't bought it yet just get a 2600k unless you have use for the 980 other than gaming

Is SATA better to have than IDE?
This is the MOBO btw so I think I'm good.
