x16 and x8 2.0 are fine, x4 might give you a 10-15% performance loss depending on the card itself, but
there's no difference between 16x and 8x 2.0 at the minute on single GPU cards.
The motherboard you were going to get is quite old and misses a few of the newer motherboard's features, plus there's almost no point
in getting an AM3 board at the minute as it's just outdated technology.
And yes, games are barely using 3-4gb as it is nevermind 16gb, 4 or 8gb is fine (8gb recommended just because RAM is dirt cheap anyway).
Make sure to 2x4gb or 2x2gb depending on what you choose, and you don't need those silly heatspreaders, just simple clean g.skill or XMS3 is fine, although ripjaws tend to be cheap anyway.
Do you guys think I need an upgrade to play BF3 and Skyrim on med-high settings at preferably around 45-50 fps?
Current Specs:
CPU: Intel i5 750 2.66 GHz
GPU: ATI Radeon 4870 X2 2GB
RAM: 4GB Kingston 1333MHz
Mobo: Asus P7H55 or something
OS: Win 7 Ultimate x64
Also I'm kinda worried about the GPU because sometimes one of the cores idles around 80c and the other at like 60c, should I be worried?
Any answers would be much appreciated.
Sounds like you should be fine.
Thanks for the tips, i'll just got with 8gb but I wanted the heat spreaders for aesthetics, matches the mobo and what not. I can't see myself getting more than two cards so i'll likely pick that mobo up too.
Is it faster to have 4x2 or 2x4?

Clean dust off your GPU with compressed air, the 4870 X2 is notorious for being fucking hot, but it's still too high. Upgrade when the games comes out, not before.

You should really not be choosing aesthetics over functionality.
It's like $5 difference let him get the pretty ones with spreaders, but keep in mind spreaders can have compatibility problems with space shuttles for coolers like the NH-D14 or similar.
And you want 2x4gb.

Wasn't he choosing a motherboard without CF over another? I jumped into the conversation just now, so well, I'm not too informed on his choices.

Thanks for the tip, I'll do that.

Thank you.

That wasn't my plan, it looks to have a faster/same speed then most so I figured why not go with some aesthetics.

I just misunderstood something along the line, I guess.
Yeah I tend to only go for looks after i've met the functionality criteria
Anyways i'll mention I wanted a PSU with 80 plus gold certification and enough power to handle a higher end rig, while being modular.
I was going to go with this Seasonic but i'm all for learning why it might be a bad choice.

Not worth it at all.
Only semi-modular, but quite a bit cheaper: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207015
You don't need gold certification, really.
[editline]24th August 2011[/editline]
Didn't really notice that it was .ca, so it isn't as expensive as I thought at first. Still, I don't see the point in having a bit better effieciency if it's 100 watts less, than another PSU of comparable quality, really.
750w XFX Semi-modular or TX750m is the way to go.
What's the name of that program that can forward udp/tcp ports?
It's called port forwarding and you can access it in your router's settings.
I have a 3 year old HP desktop right now that i've upgraded a couple times. It runs BFBC2 fairly well on low-medium detail at 1680x1050 (i get about 30-40 FPS).
Here are the specs:
Intel core 2 quad Q6600, 2.4 ghz
2x 2gb ram
2x 1.5tb 7200rpm drives running in raid
1x nvidia geforce 8600 gt
My question is: should i upgrade for BF3? I don't mind playing on medium or low detail as long as i can play at full resolution (1680x1050). If so, what should i upgrade? I'm a college student working minimum wage, so i don't want to spend more than 100 dollars or so. I was thinking i would get one of those sexy new ATI cards like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102930
But i wanted to get a second opinion and this seemed like the right place.

Also i use dual screens but play games on one so i need at least two dvi/vga ports but i have adapters so it could be one dvi and one vga or so.

By the way, what do you guys do with your old computers?

You didn't answer my question...

I'm afraid I'm not the guy to answer that, I'm still living with a 2GHz dual core and an HD2400
Anyone know a good site or something that helps me getting started building a high-end gaming computer. And no trololol-alienware

It would help a lot if you could overclock the CPU, but the BIOS on pre-builts are normally pretty locked-down. Anyhow, you'll probably need a new PSU (unless you have bought one earlier on (if you have, list it)), as the more powerful cards take up a lot more power than the one you have now. I advise that you save up ~180$ if you really want to make a worthwhile investment.
I'm not sure i want to upgrade my desktop now. I have a brand new macbook pro; is it possible to run bootcamp for battlefield 3?

Depends what the specs of the Macbook are. You definitely could do it, but it may not look very good.

My Magic 8 Ball says "Outlook Not So Good".
I'm not sure though, maybe on lower settings. I can't find the exact specs of the Macbook Pro on their site.
[editline]24th August 2011[/editline]
Found it.
If you have the AMD GPU, you might have a shot.

If it's the Sandy Bridge model, and either the upgraded 15" or the 17", there's a chance that it might run better than your current computer. I wouldn't be too sure about it, though. If you can scrape together 180$, you can probably get an 6850 and an Antec Basiq. I advice you to wait with the upgrade until the game is actually released, though.

It's the current generation 17 inch. My college requires them so i spent my scholarship money on it.
Specs:
2.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB
500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 RPM
AMD radeon HD 6750m 1gb
If this were a PC i could probably run it no sweat. My only concern is the fact that i have to run two operating systems at once and a resource intensive game.
As you can read at the last page my friend bought a new computer today. I helped him build it but when we was done and was going to start we did notice the graphic card did not have any VGA output and his monitor (HP LE2201w) only have VGA inputs.
My friend found an DVI to VGA adapter but when we started the PC the monitor was just black and said no signal.
So the question is now. Can I have done something wrong when I did build it or is it that the adapter is broken?
I have checked in the computer and everything is working in it and we did try to run the windows 7 CD but the monitor was still black.
It's a brand new hdd btw if that makes any different.
Thanks

Is there any beeping?
HDD wouldn't matter, it would still show the display. All you really need is a GPU, CPU, motherboard and RAM and everything should post properly (well a PSU too obviosuly).
Make sure you have the GPU power in, and that - if the case uses standoffs - standoffs are properly installed.
The computer beeps when we started it yes. Checked the standoffs and they was properly installed.
Does a new CPU comes with pre-applied thermal paste? or is it in a baggie?
