Finally... Solid evidence emerges about Steam for Linux!

being a tremendous git would attribute to it somewhat you'd think
Yeah, Adobe could get their head out of their ass and make the Creative Suite on Linux, but it could still be closed-source, to protect their intellectual properties from being re-hashed and ported to everything.
I think developers look at Linux, the philosophy behind a ton of it, and the two words "open source" and immediately think of it as a daunting journey for any developer. In reality, it's just a new backbone.
Holy crap yes. With this I'll finally have a reason to install a linux distro on my desktop instead of just my laptop and server.
It would be the icing on the cake if Gaben was wearing a penguin suit prior to release.

People would just laugh at him
Probably will come with a Penguin hat for linux users in TF2.
Just like the earbuds, just instead of Mac, you have to use linux.

That would actually be pretty cool to have something like that. Difference of course, is that anyone can get that item as Ubuntu (I'm assuming they're deploying to this distro first) is free.
I wonder when Valve will launch a Beta testing program for Steam and any source games they have ported so far.

Easy advertising for Canonical!
Everybody rushes to get Ubuntu -> People find Ubuntu awesome -> More and more people use Linux, market share goes up!

I truly believe 2012/2013 will be GREAT for Linux developments. :3

They have been working on Left 4 Dead 2 so far and that's pretty much their "testbed" so expect that to ship with steam first.

Yeah IIRC, the Mac version only came with Portal 1, then they slowly released the rest of their games rather than all at once.

It actually makes sense when you think about it.
Since then they'll only have to focus on offering support for one game on that platform until they've gotten the problem(s) solved.
And THEN they move on to the next game.

Point valid. Because when the majority of games are ported, they can focus on fixes, patches, and optimizations.
Like many other people have said, if this is true, I may not need much of a use for Windows after all. :)
Oh boy... here we go...

Gabe sent the same response to Liam Dawe from Gaming on Linux. So to all you Phoronix haters, he's not lying!

Because we all know Valve are spot on with their release estimates.

I'd rather have a polished, working, not very buggy client than a messed up, buggy, unpolished, unpredictable client. Patience is a virtue, guys.

Half-Life 2 released in 2004... Haven't we been patient enough?
*Snip*
Wrong thread.

I think they were pretty on the ball with the Mac steam.
I don't remember how long it took from announcement to beta though.

Market size and profit margin.
Even though Valve are saints compared to other dev's and publishers they still need money from their investments, and as such they can't always gamble their money.
At-least it isn't EA's Origin that's being ported.

If Origin was going to be ported for Linux, GPU producers would be forced to make drivers specially for it. :v:
You know, as a Desura developer, I am a little upset by this, but at this point I think it's going to help everybody in general. Drivers, gamers, users, and the ecosystem. I just hope that Valve contributes some open source utilities, or patches to any projects they've edited (think SDL, etc).

This would make Valve a bigger contributor to Linux than any other corporation.

What about Red Hat or Intel?

I think he was making a "Gabe is fat" joke
I hope other game devs will follow this. Would love to go back to using Linux full time again. Wine doesn't cut it on everything I play.
I imagine the Linux catalog will look a lot like Mac catalog. A buttload of indy games, Valve's games, and a few AAA titles sprinkled in like the recently announced Mac version of The Witcher 2 or Civilization V.
