EXACTLY.
Half-Life 2 released in 2004... Haven't we been patient enough?
The delay between Half-Life and Half-Life 2 was 6 years.
In other words, keep your pants on.

It shouldn't take 4 years for one Episode 3 of Half-life 2. The whole concept behind releasing "Episodes" was to get us content more frequently. VALVe OBVIOUSLY is severely under-staffed if shit's taking this long to go nowhere with the Half-Life Franchise. We've gotten two Left4Dead games (Which we didn't ask for) and Portal 2, when we really want Gordon's next adventure. Talk about ultimate trolling, VALVe takes the cake. (Which is also a lie)
I didn't realize that Episode 3 was confirmed, I thought it was just gonna be Half-Life 3.
Nope. That misconception came from Valve saying that they weren't going to use the episodic model after Episode 3. There was a large misquoting where people forgot the "after Episode 3" bit.
at least "some" open-source components would be nice. after all i came to linux not only for better software but mostly for freedom from DRM, closed source and other crap like that. We'll see.
snip
I'll ask this in the Linux chat thread since its off topic.

I understand your reasoning. However, one of the reasons that Steam is attractive is the features that it boasts. If Valve were to release the source it'd allow easier duplication of those features, thus making Steam as a whole weaker. In addition, source code releases would expose vulnerability, which would make stealing games MUCH easier.
90% of that is probably uneducated bullshit but still, I don't see how Steam would ultimately be good for the bottom line.

None of this is correct.

It isn't? Well, what consequences would there be of releasing the Steam source code? There must be one.

More variations of the Steam client, and possibly community fixes.
It would make Steam-less game rips easier to port. :/

A better client?
I'd rather have a polished, working, not very buggy client than a messed up, buggy, unpolished, unpredictable client. Patience is a virtue, guys.
Then use WINE on the Windows Version.
did you just try to say that running it through wine is MORE stable than a predictable, buggy knockoff?

Whats the point? It's a window that displays web pages. There's really not much to see.
Really, the only thing worth open sourcing is the chat protocol, which was reverse engineered by SteamRE (run by Facepunch users) anyway.
I dunno, the overlay might be cool? Not really though.

Steam doesn't have any earth shattering functionality that nobody else has done before.

Running Steam through wine here, and it works perfectly.
1.5.3
I have used Steam on WINE since verision 1.2, and it still has window lag issues

It's obvious to me that the Wine devs don't give a single fuck about Steam users by now.
So this just keeps getting better and better for us:

No, please! NO! Not the goddamn EA! We do NOT want this company to give us their shitty and overrated games with 50$ DLC's!
Just kidding. We'll see.

You're STILL dead to me EA.
Here's the deal with EA. If you don't like their games or their business practices or whatever else they might be doing wrong, just don't buy their products. It doesn't matter if the game is on Windows, Linux, Consoles or any other platform.
Don't buy their products and you won't have to deal with their bullshit.

Gamers have proven time and time again that they don't have balls, a boycott would never work.
Valve: "We want to get our games out to a wider audience"
EA: "Let's port our games to Linux and sell them for twice as much, its working for the humble bundle!"

iD Software: You guys are a few years too late.
You know, BF3 and other games wouldn't be so bad on Linux.

I think BF3 especially would be bad on Linux. Or, at least it wouldn't run. Partially because it's Direct3D and not OpenGL, and partially because most drivers for GPUs on Linux are shit.
Or at least, that's my experience.

Well, CryEngine is coming to Linux as well, so we'll have Crysis...
EA has only released two HTML5/Flash games on the Ubuntu Software Center. I don't think you tinfoil hat wearers are in any danger of Mass Effect 3 coming to Linux yet.
